although I've always been a michael Jackson fan and admire his voice as a youngster especially, this video shows that his voice became thin and nasally as he matured. Perhaps his many nasal surgeries played a part in him losing some of the fullness to his tone? I noticed also that Seth didn't correct Michael on some of the notes where he was forcing the sound and cracking. I thought that was the whole point of having the voice coach listening in!
@muskysnax I don't know too much about singers voice, the training and everything that goes with it. So you might be right in what you're saying. But I just wanted you to (if you haven't already) check out "Michael Jackson - stranger in moscow accapella" here on youtube.
@muskysnax Actually, he never lost the fullness in his voice. He changed his style of singing when he crossed over to pop. He still had that soulful fullness, it just does not cross over to pop music. :)
@TheNikkiDD i mean, listening to 'gone to soon', that is one of the most soulful performances i have ever heard in my life. so moving. i know what you mean though. however, michael has ALWAYS been a pop artist though. the only time he did traditional R&B was when the brothers were produced by bobby taylor. gordy moved them into pop territory within moments, then they were in the top 10.
@lumbia33 Maybe you're not sure about the definition of pop, r&b and soul musics, but Motown did not churn out pop stars during that era. Have you ever heard of 'The Motown Sound'? It was not pop. Maybe you are trying to say they became popular artist, but MJ completed the pop crossover when the Thriller album hit.
@TheNikkiDD hee hee... that's why i said "i know what you mean though." because i KNEW you were speaking more about genre than spirit. in terms of 'the motown sound' it's been well documented in interviews and books that gordy edged 'the motown sound' to be less about an R&B sensibility, and more towards catering to mainstream (white) america. this is what i mean about pop. technically, it was R&B though. this is why diana ross was put out front instead of florence ballard...
@TheNikkiDD i figured as much... all it takes is some explanation, which is hard to do on these sites which encourage few words. and i write A LOT, so...
@TheNikkiDD@TheNikkiDD so ultimately, it comes down to semantics, and our definition of 'pop' may be different. i am using 'pop' in an industry sense, as opposed to genre. for all intents and purposes, in an industry sense, michael has always been a pop artist. and in genre, limited to R&B' and soul, despite doing everything from jazz, standards, classical, etc. peace...
Respond to this video... And, I think we are also talking about two different things when you say that the performance of 'Gone Too Soon' was moving and soulful. It was a soulful performance, but it is not 'Soul Music' (the genre), or R&B (the genre), it is considered pop music.
@TheNikkiDD yes we are talking about two things, for sure... you are correct. and with that, it is still 'soul music'. there's WAY too much in the genre of 'soul' that i don't consider soulful, so i try to limit my usage of the word in that way. yes, in genre and industry standards, it is 'pop'. but for me, it is soul. simply because it is FILLED with soul. much of the music at the time michael recorded this had no soul, despite being pulled in that genre. i hope i answered your question.
@lumbia33 ross' voice was fit more for the copa crowd. this is what gordy aimed his acts to reach. again, this is why i say pop. many a documentarian and motown act speak to this. acts were also told not to speak to political or black empowerment issues openly. when political records WERE released- prior to 'what's going on' and a few STEVIE cuts (plus the black forum label), motown was vaguely political.
@lumbia33 But, I do take issue with the 'R&B ghetto' comment you made. R&B has been associated with black people, but I have never heard that the genre of R&B music is rooted in or reflective of the ghetto. Blues perhaps, but not R&B.
@TheNikkiDD hmmm... see what i mean by writing? you have never heard of 'the R&B ghetto'... all the 'ghetto' means in this case is compartmentalizing and limiting a people by way of genre. this is what a ghetto (in its descriptive sense) means. you have the jewish ghettos, the cuban and brazillian favelas... ghettos can be very limiting to one's sensibility. but also spark creativity- hence curtis mayfield, etc. R&B is actually rooted in gospel and blues...
@TheNikkiDD ...and this came out of the fields and ghettos. R&B came out of early rock n' roll... motown was also called 'rock n' roll' at one point as well... motown acts were part of the T.A.M.I show, the rock n' roll show. otis redding was also tagged rock n' roll... it used to be intermingled, because rock music originally came out of the church and blues. this is why i think 'soul' and 'R&B' is so limiting, and it ghettoizes artists. it's like 'race' music all over again.
@TheNikkiDD i hope, again, i have explained. symbolism is very important but a las, it doesn't always translate over on the internet- especially if someone is not familiar. peace...
@TheNikkiDD@lumbia33 and i agree that the complete crossover happened with 'thriller', but remember that the J5 did very well in europe and japan as well, despite not getting a lot of magazine covers(in the states particularly), due to their ethnicity. that was a major issue as well. and 'off the wall' did excellent, despite being placed in the R&B' ghetto by the industry. jones already worked in jazz and pop, so his production (and michael's appeal) worked to market michael to that audience.
@lumbia33 Of course!!! J5 was brilliant, but those were the 60's and 70's (hence the ethnicity issue), so no J5 never made a crossover, as such, but we can argue semantics all day as far as what we term a cross over. According to me, J5 did cross over but according to the industry, no. Jones was a composer so he was able to expose Michael to a lot especially production.
@TheNikkiDD right. exactly. i am speaking to the aim of gordy though. he aimed for europe, and they got there. he aimed for the copa, and the supremes and four tops got there. and the J5 was the biggest selling motown artist at one time. they crossed over into middle america. i'd say that's as crossover as you can get. the industry considered them R&B cats who crossed into middle america. michael learned a lot from his experiences, for sure.
@muskysnax he didn't correct him on everything vocally; but there were points where he would ask questions, knowing that there were certain parts michael was struggling with- it appears as if michael was practising due to a specific recording session- hence the mention of bruce (swedien). and in some of the pauses it was very clear riggs knew michael struggled with a few of the lowest (and highest) notes on the register. that said, his range is phenomenal. i know MY range is not that high!
@muskysnax it was very nice to hear his 'baritone', as he usually stays in a higher tenor on his recordings. listening to this for the 20,000th time, i just cowered, saying 'don't do it!!!' it just amazes me how high and low the man can go. he doesn't always find opportunities to utilize his full range. but you hear the range all throughout his music. from 'blues away' to 'childhood' to 'gone to soon' to 'you can't win'... i always love hearing where his voice goes in these rehearsals.
@muskysnax 'man in the mirror' is another song which displays his range.. 'she's out of my life'... his songs are actually pretty hard to sing, as the songs, even if he doesn't use the full range in individual songs, actually use a fairly wide range. having performed some of his music on a stage (and my range not being as wide as his) i had to lower the pitch, similar to how he's done live. the man is amazing, with one of the most- if not the most- amazing vibratos i have ever heard in my life.
Just listening to this makes me smile, thinking of Michael doing these exercises before a concert, He had an amazing range!!! WOW!! It sounded like he was really reaching for some of those notes, but once he was warmed up, there was no stopping him!!
i was listening to this with my jaw dropped and after i went to bed with his angel voice in my head and i was so happy inside. his voice makes me happy.
It could only be Michael that you could listen to going up and down the scales and be totally absorbed, would we listen to anybody else? You can hear him breathe I closed my eyes, it felt like he was in the room. We take it for granted that he could sing, but he was a perfectionist so it makes sense he would have a voice coach to tweek the best performance. What a genius. But he cant resist doing that little qiver at the end of a note, listen to the scales after the lip humming, it is so Mchael

i love his voice, it makes me shiver just hearing it. i could listen to this all day. when i listen to this with headphones on, it feels like hes singing in my ear. mmm, love you michael<3
Well, they should release this as a single, LOL-I would buy it-might make number one, lol.
Could you imagine all the Michael haters having to put up with this at # 1 in the charts, LOL. I have actually been able to smile at these thoughts; it has been all tears for so long & again, earlier over something else about him. My next sudden bout of sadness/tears, may arrive in the next hour or tomorrow; I have become familiar with this erratic pattern over the last few months :(
Very interesting, I'm not a voice major, but I am a pianist and its just amazing, sometimes we forget just how much of a talent he was in SO many areas of his art. simply amazing
I love to listen to this. Wish he was still here with us cos today he could have been celebrating his birthday with his kids. I miss you Mike and I love you!
OH!! this made me laugh!! wow ... voice training can really be funny ... i couldn't stop laughing in the begining .... wow MJ has such an Amazing voice!!
this sls singing is the ONLY way to do it right!
try moving your hand down as you go up in pitch. just another trick to help.
singing is a lot about fear of losing your voice when you go into the upper notes.
when you go up think down mmm about 1 inch below your bellybutton.
