I saw the original broadcast of this when I was a kid. I remember being awe struck afterwards. I knew I had just witnessed something profound. The next day I tried to explain to my friends at school (third grade) what I had seen.
They looked at me like I was crazy, and thought that I was making it all up.
There had never been any thing like this, until The Beatles came along. It wasn't until they appeared on Ed Sullivan that my friends finally got it - and even then, some didn't.
I remember seeing this too, but always thought later it was the Carson show, but then remembered i was probably watching Jack Paar at the age of 12ish, so found this. Thing about my memory is that I remember the hairdoos but not the faces, which are blank in the memory file. BECAUSE, had never heard of them before, but there's a memory there because it made an impression, maybe the hair, which was extremely different in early 60s america, but also the music
I love YouTube - what a great memory. I distinctly remember the Jack Paar airing of the Beatles clip...not this one, but the original clip that he refers to and shows here...I watched with my mother, who at the time, made fun of Paar, commenting, "They laughed at Elvis, too!"...she was 50 at the time and my sisters were teens through the Elvis years...
Jack Paar was a self-promoting ass. He says he had them "on his show" because he played on his show a film of a Beatles performance in England.
He didn't meet them or talk to them or interview them. Sullivan did, and had them perform live. Sorry, Jack, but your attempt to rewrite history was pathetic.
Yes I agree, that is pretty cheap of Paar. In the interval between sullivan signing the Beatles and their actual arrival in the u.s., beatlemania exploded and every square in america like Paar, was now attempting to get in on it. All he did was show some stock news feed from the UK. Pathetic to claim anything more.
sort of self serving and arrogant. He reminds me of that same group of "older people" or "adults" that ridiculed the Beatles and all forms of youthful, joyus, NEW music for always. Since before Elvis these people existed. And don't think that we all just turn into them as we get older....WE DON'T...you may still like the Beatles and not "get" Green Day or Oasis..or whoever...but THOSE people we're born square and we'll always BE square. They will never "get" anything.
This is the first footage of The Beatles that I ever saw .. and I thank Jack Paar for it, whatever his motivation was. How wonderful of you to post; thanks for sharing.
I agree, sort of, Paar showed the first clips, Sullivan was smart enough to book them for their first live American performance. I love all these old clips no matter who claims the credit.
You know, it's funny, Paar was legendary for raging against rock n'roll on his late night talk show in the 50's/60's and again during his (failed) return to television in the 70's. It's funny to see him here, in what I presume is the 1980's, trying to take credit for the rock and roll that he found so repulsive. Don't get me wrong, I love Paar...but still.
yeah, way to try and rewrite history Jack! He had a little news clip (you have to see the original) that did not even have the Beatles sound clip. That clip he showed here was a separate piece that was just edited in. He even knew Sullivan had signed them for February and his little 3 minute news clip was in January.
This idiot may have had them on his show first, but he completely cut off what they sounded like. DOn`t believe this clip. All he showed was them with no sound.
Jack spelled his last name PAAR.

Terrific information. I always thought that it was The Ed Sullivan Show.

Jack Paar looks like a Republican queer, he should attend one of those Bohemian Grove festivals.

I loved Jack Paar and I thought he was a true gentleman. I saw this clip when it was on originally.

I actually saw that show in 1963....Jack Paar has always been a snob....it's no wonder he walked off his own show...so much for Paar!

I don't know if that is funnier true or not true -- if she was there, I guess that speaks to the breadth of her nefarious scheme.
