  • @Mybella19 I think it had something to do with her past life being abused as an orphan girl. No matter how pretty you are, when these bad things happened to you, it would affect your image of your self as a girl...<3 her

  • marilyn doesn't look good...I mean of course she looks gorgeous...but she looks tired and drawn.

  • Dean Martin was a terrible actor.

  • It's so simple: Marilyn was tired and didn't want to work. Fox forced her to make the movie. That's why all the problems in the shoot

  • Marilyn wanted to trust people but people kept blaming her for there own mistakes instead of recongizing the good work she did as an actress and they paid her a lot less money then Elizabeth Taylor.

  • I think that people simply exploited Marilyn. She wasn't good at defending herself or making excuses, so people simply branded her in a way that was convenient for them. If she wasnt going to make them money they wanted nothing to do with her. I think with Liz they considered the person behind the problems much more than they did with Marilyn.

  • She was spot on about the Shah of Iran, still going on with ahmadinejad these days. can't imagine him wanting to go to hollywood though

  • when someone says their sick, it doesn't always mean a cold especially in marilyn's case, she was trying to reach out to people cause she was truly sick mentally but no one seemed to care which was quite sad, if only someone truly cared, maybe, just maybe this wonderful woman would still be with us today, i think the one thing marilyn wanted more than anything in the world, is to be truly loved, not just loved as marilyn monroe the icon but norma jean the human being

  • How can she not think she was pretty enough? She's Gorgeous.

  • I really wish they could've finished the movie :(

  • Marilyn Monroe was the biggest star yet she had to work to erase the debt of a picture with Taylor as the star of? What humiliation for Marilyn, yet everybody wanted to jump down Marilyn's throat because she was sick talking about she was holding up production costs, yet nobody commented on Taylor being sick and holding up the production of Cleopatra. Nor did they mention her galavanting around town with Burton as a married woman. Nor did they mention how drunk she was while shooting Cleopatra.

  • @ThePharaoho IN fact, EVERYBODY talked about Taylor's lateness and illnesses and hold-ups.(And there were many veiled column references to her drinking ) As wth MM, not all of "Cleo" massive over-budget should be laid at Taylor's feet. But Fox was too far in to fire or reprimande Taylor. MM's film was only a couple of million over, and as the studio hated her anyway, were only to glad to try to get rid of her. Fox tried to sue Eliz after "Cleo" came out, but...they lost. She was tough.

  • @waif55 It's true, Elizabeth was a huge star, but so was Marilyn. Marilyn was also tough and refused to be handled by fox. She was the first major actress to open her own production comp. and to get director's approval. Every actress had flops. Marilyn only had 2 flops in her whole career. She still made good at the box office and the studio knew it which is why they hired her back.. Despite her age, Marilyn was more beautiful than ever. So I doubt she would've had trouble finding work.

  • @waif55 And Cleopatra didn't exactly break box office records you know? Because of this movie and Taylor's inability to make up for it in ticket sales fox went bankrupt.

  • @ThePharaoho "Cleo" was a huge hit with the public--$26 million gross, right off. But because of the incredible cost, there was no way to make it up for the studio. Eventually, after European grosses and the sale to TV was counted, "Cleo" made back its cost. Years later, Taylor would prove even more disastrous for Fox, with "The Only Game In Town" and then--in 1976--"The Bluebird" Tho the latter really wasn't her fault. It was "directed" by...George Cukor!

  • @waif55 The point was the studio was stupid for spending so much money on a single project in the first place and Cukor was a woman's director. He worked best with women.

  • ugh whenever i watch things like this, even though obviously i didn't know her i always wish i could go back in time and save her or something. been a good friend to her, encourage her to get to work, maybe protected her. she's got this vulnerableness that makes you want to help her, not to mention she's obviously incomparably beautiful.

  • @mollymariex i know right? i feel the same way. you can't help but want to console her. i wish she could of had a better life. no person could even slightly compare to her. Fox & MGM has/have made so much money off of her, it's ridiculous.

  • I like her look in this film (platinum blond almost white hair, dark liner on eyes maximizing them). It is highly artificial, as was the ideal at the time, but she looked good that way.

  • What a power play between "The Stars" of Cleopatra and Something's Got to Give.

To ask, assume, or expect that MM's performance-production company was needed to balance the studio books for Burton and Taylor's indulgences seems to be out of balance if not out of bounds.

Given that MM earned the studio two hundred million dollars, was making something of a comeback and expected to produce a miracle, the powers that be surely wanted their pound of flesh. MM was so murdered as an example to all.

  • Put Marilyn in a line up against some of the stars now and we can name five stars that have done worse!!!!!! Or more!!!!!!If she had the support that stars get now we would still be seeing her in movies now. A Lady a class act a star over whelmed by the fame!! and no one to help her through it!!!!

  • I agree with safehouse123 regarding Marilyn. Whoever said Marilyn is a bitch is clearly an asshole!

  • I don't think Freudian analysis helped MM at all! She had a great deal of sadness buried in her past. Digging it up was toxic for her well being.

  • @willbgood65

Freudian analysis was Marilyn's undoing! And Arthur Miller.

  • cyd charise kinda looks like sophia loren a little

  • Marilyn felt that Elizabeth Taylor was her arch rival. I don't think it was fair for all of Fox's financial troubles to be put upon Marilyn, since they were caused by Elizabeth Taylor. Especially since most of the problems with filming "Cleopatra" were caused by Liz and Dick having an affair and having the best food and drink flown in from all over the world, etc... Maybe Marilyn felt like she was being treated shabbily by this double standard and perhaps this caused her health to get worse.

  • the main diff between marilyn & elizabeth is that....elizabeth was held high cause she was a box office event & she cared about her performances & worked her ass off.....if she wanted food from paris...what the hell...bring it on baby...she was a class act....one thing is that she was a total bitch on her private life but she did cared about acting at least...marilyn tired...but not enough

  • id stick up for Marilyn any day...ive hed enough of bitches like Liz....

  • Comment removed

  • true but marilyn was a b"·$ too,she ditched one of her best lovers,a good stable man(what she needed)& great artist andre de dienes cause she was screwing with hollywood, arthur & robert, she made that clearly to him & he was greatly hurt, both of them, liz & marilyn where after hound dogs, cash & politicians.I'll stick to deborah kerr or whatever, plus she was cuter(no?witness the black nacissus & life & death of colonel blimp) & also totally humble, you're right, those others where totally bitches

  • @missfoxxxxxxx

All that stuff about Liz comes from one off the cuff comment MM made, "I'll be happy to see all those covers with me, not Liz!" ANY actress at the time would have said the same thing. They were hardly rivals--Elizabeth was a respected Oscar winner. MM, alas, was not respected. Marilyn was distraught over aging, her troubled career. She had a history of suicde attempts. Liz Taylor was the least of it.

  • @missfoxxxxxxx If the studio went into bankrupcy it should have been over Marilyn Monroe and not Elizabeth Taylor. I like Elizabeth and am a fan, but lets be honest, Marilyn was the more bankable star, still is really. Marilyn made more money at the box office than Taylor had in just a decade. She was Fox's biggest star and should have been treated as such. Marilyn also hated Darryl Zanuck the head of Fox because he treated her as an inferior star. He paid Taylor $1 mil to Monroe's $300,000

  • @ThePharaoho I adore MM and love Liz. But you are incorrect. Elizabeth was the FAR bigger box-office draw in 1962. She had big hits with "Raintree" Giant" "Cat" "Suddenly" and Butterfield" She'd won the Oscar (no matter the merit of that performance) and was the most publicized woman in the world, thanks to her never-ending scandals. Marilyn's films were flopping and she was six years older than Eliz. MM was still a great star, but declining. And, Hollywood did not respect her at all.

  • @missfoxxxxxxx Contin: Monroe had to work harder and fight for everything she got even though she was the highest grosser while Taylor was given every concession. Marilyn even left Fox because of their treatment of her and sued to start her own production comp "the first from a major motion picture star" and for script and directors approval which should have been given to her long before. Marilyn had to even fight to renegotiate her contract after being rehired for this film before she died.

  • Miss Cyd seems like she was a TOTAL class act!!!

  • she looks even prettier than marilyn here....it seems that marilyn had shitload of makeup here...syd was cute & at ease here...acting: top form too.....my opinion...but both where gorgeous :).....although syd wins the leggie prize :)

  • Yeah, it had to be an excuse on Marilyns part.......Israel had a large embassy in Iran during the Shahs days and did big business w/each other. Just thought I'd offer this FYI. Im really enjoying this series on Marilyn. Thank you darling.

  • lollll marilyn had ppl on set watching

  • OOPPS!!I I see that you question was already answered. Pardon me.

  • Gogo,he said that Marilyn told him that Cyd Chariise was padding her breast.

  • omj she was and still is sooo beautiful at 7:59 she looks like an angel caught on camera.

  • What did the guy say at 6:57 about Marilyn talking about Cyd? Cyd was painting her breasts? Pitting her breasts? What does that mean, anyone know?

  • Padding her breasts!

  • A result of chauvinism.

  • WOW, CYD looks like Faith Hill, but with beautiful brown hair.

  • ^_^ thank's *-*
