  • Gotta agree with HiHoSilverfish, Steve did an absolutely fantastic job on this song, totally nailed his solo.

  • It's really hard to make a groovy theme really beautiful (usually if it's groovy it's just groovy, not really beautiful), but these two guys made it happen!

I don't even know who I like and admire better Steve or Vix, probably Steve (cause he has 6 strings and no frets), but they are both geniuses. After watching such videos I usually have one of 2 wishes depending on overall mood: 1. Go practice bass, or 2. Throw my bass away 'cause they are just too good and I can't reach this level

  • @Decubuntu you might never reach their level in innovation, but you can reach it in imitation, never give up y0

  • I go to the school where Steve Bailey teaches Bass...where is your god now?

    UNCW

  • @MusicXofXtheXsoul you're not the only one, don't brag dude, lol. go ccu!

  • so much I've learned, so much to learn. One of the most beautiful rules of life, you're never the best at anything.

  • so relaxing..

  • Simply awesome.

  • How could u dislike this? -____-

  • Steve is the Natural Harmonics Wizard

  • @AxozOfDeth they're artificial harmonics.

  • OMG I JUST LOVE STEVE BAILEY!@

I'm a huge man of him!

I'm even going to buy one of his old Aria 6 string fretless bass because it sounds sooo good(and the Fender one costs $2500! jeez...)!!

He uses that one in these videos with Vic.

Getting it 2nd hand,BUT WHO CARES?!

He is so talented,I just ask my self everyday how come he is not as famous as Jaco.

Though I really REALLY love Jaco,Steve is also a fretless bass G-E-N-I-US!!

  • I'm sure that the half of the views are mine, I can't stop listening to it!

  • victor wooten is cleveland - i'm sure

  • this is so good that when I hear this i want to slam someones head with my guitar

  • VW the best and SB is a very nice bassman...

  • I love Victor's playing,so untense and passionate.

  • Amazing.Just AMAZING.

  • What song is he quoting at 5:48? It sounds so familiar. Is it a Jimi Hendrix song?

  • @x1te Yeah. It sounds like that Machine Gun song off the "Band of Gypsies" album. Love that album, and this video. Pretty amazing. I honestly had the thought "Steve Bailey is screwed! How can he follow that solo 4:00?! There's nothing he can possibly do to match or do better then Vic W's solo." (Vic W is what those of us who are hhis close friends call him.)

Wow.... so, that's how he can follow Victor's solo. Simply amazing.

  • I can never get enough of this video..

  • amazing

  • the solo of steve bailey is awesome

  • Steve killed it in this video, too awesome!

  • 3:59 victor look like hes doin something different to bassplaying haha

  • 3:18 another one

  • 2:17 - 2:21 best lick ive EVER heard

  • there is a part wich sounds untuned

im just saying tehy both are amazing

  • Freaking Steve Bailey and his artificial harmonics!!

  • This is just brilliant.. They are too good.

  • fucking amazing

  • yeah, for real.. LOL

  • thing of beauty!!! ♥

  • WOW

  • lol bailey's bass playing is awesome but it sounds sometimes like the old version of paper mario XD

  • so.. WHEN was that recorded :?

  • @Criptlor I think the original VHS came out in '94.

  • God, that's like the best thing ever recorded.

  • Two guitars and a drum = cheap jam

Two bass and a drum = extra-satisfying-groovy jam

  • @felixcharronducharme but in this formation!

  • @felixcharronducharme Unless you're Animals As Leaders.

  • @Humandavid1 I don't know how Abasi does it..

  • pure inspiration.... awsome stuff man.. these guys are wizards...

  • que buen video loco! como dijo uno hubiese estado mejor aun si Bailey se hubiera subido los pantlones un poco más =)

  • Victor Wooten, i gess he is the best Bassist in the world, and no one in ten years surpassed him. Jaco, im sory, but Victor is better than you.

  • @heptabyte Technically, Victor is superior, but Jaco came at a time when nobody was doing what he was. He revolutionized the bass guitar, and paved the way for people like Victor. Still, I agree that Victor might be the best ever.

  • It doesn't mean that bailey is not great in playing but he uses tecnique not heart.......wooten gives emotions.....baileys gives...........notes

  • @DustyPonz How can you not see the heart that bailey gives to this song, especially in the parts that he provides the rhythm?something is wrong wit u my frend

  • @simon23tnr I mean that he plays...it seems to me he had not even so much fun doing that...... Vic looks like he had been having a sexual relation with the bass......vic is a victim of the theme he plays.....it's what I see...It seems to me that you see just what they do and not how....I mean nothing abuot the melody or similar...Bailey is just a little colder.....

  • @DustyPonz : yeah it is what they are doing matters to me, like me for example im a bass player and yeah i play like im always having an orgasm, yet my teacher on the other hand, plays better than me yet is cold and not really playing like he feels it. If i am a listener on the other hand, really i always use my ears rather than how i perceive it in the eye. The way you said that bailey gives notes and technique, you're really refering to what they do and not how.

  • Just amazing!

  • fantastic! i love Victor!

  • This is a tribute to stanley clarke right ?

  • @Skidhblanir No...why would it be?

  • @ianonfire i just thought that because some of the tracks on th album are named after musicans who influenced them

  • @ianonfire Yes it is. It says so in the book that goes with the album.

  • @Skidhblanir Yes. It says in the book that it was written as a tribute to Stanley Clarke who they both admire.

  • Thsi a tribute to Stanley Clarke right?

  • Fino demaiss!!

  • nice!

  • they are both groovey mothers :P

  • monos culiaos secos

  • beautiful harmonies, a definite study piece.

  • The ending made faint !

  • @Bassoid OMG I KNOW !!!!!!!!!!

  • @martialart2 I had to write so fast I didn´t get to write the ME in my previous post.

  • Awesome.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love 5:00-6:40 where they do this harmonious dueling back and forth, that is awesome

  • So Steve Bailey is playing his signature 6 string fretless right? I'm no Bailey expert but I have never seen him use a pick, I wonder why he put a pickguard on this bass. Maybe to keep the Fender look?

  • @kbot86 - It's an Aria Pro II 6-string fretless, and yes it's a signature edition bassypoo.

As for the pickguard, maybe it doesn't look as 'naked' as it would without it, what with having a classical Fender body. Not everything has to be practical! Just look at the apendix!

  • this video goes up to 11

  • so good

  • This video would be so much better if Bailey just wore his pants a little higher!

  • @ArseneWengerIsGod and what about Victor's vintage moustache!!!!

  • @ArseneWengerIsGod Hahaha XD

  • very nice :)

  • at 52 to 56 six victoor is just tapping lol

  • i could listen to this all day. the basses sound so perfect together, victor with his insane speed and steve with his awesome harmonics

  • what is that technique called that victor does at 52-56 secondes

  • tapping

  • Good work. *****Keep it up:-)

  • OMG!! Bailey imita la guitarra con el bajo suena pero muy genial!

  • i love this....these guys are amazing

  • sencillamente geniales...!!!

  • feelin' good

  • so wonderful and great!

  • hasta hace 7:52 min. no me gustaba el estilo de Wooten pero me callo mi bocota con esta interpretacion.

    LARAGA VIDA WOOTEN

  • this is awesome !!

  • orra... linda música!

  • who is the drumer

  • @Pureupbilloreilly

At this moment i can say, I really don't care :p

  • @Pureupbilloreilly The drummer is Greg Bissonette!

  • (8) 2 bestias (L)

  • the first part is enjoyable but i almost cried in victor solo from 2:47 to 4:20 to see all the intensity he put in that solo. that fucking crazy, wonderful music

  • sumpah kerean bgt

  • i love this song so much

    just hear it again again.....

  • Really amazing song, got stuck in my head and made for one of the most enjoyable night shifts I've ever worked lol! Everyone in this performance (including the drummer) are really talented musicians :)

  • i fucking love steve's part

  • Simplemente ESPECTACULAR!!

  • I saw this video at my bass player's house about 4 years ago and just found it on youtube again.... so beautiful!

  • SOMEONE NEED to download victor wooten and steve baileys version of portrait of tracy

  • i think fodera bass i better than fender

  • either to I!! so cool =)

  • Oh it's awesome for sure . 5* shoulfd be 10 * Respect on it .

  • i never ge tired of this video

  • it's a fender in this video

  • What? There's no Fender here. Baileys on his Aria sig (before his Fender sig), Wooten's on a Fedora

  • It's Fodera :P The Bailey's bass is definetly not a fender

  • Awesome...yeah...just dig it....yeah...yeah

  • what kind of bass did steve bailey used?

  • Aria Pro II Steve Bailey signature model. Best Arias ever.

  • yeees!!! but when and if you are virtuosi etc. then its difficult to find as good as you are!! I think :D but I'm not that good like those guys!!! And if you are very good something that you do anything really, then you are very dfficult person. just like Blackmore at least what I heard.

  • They're great. Technically perfect. I'd be rather more impressed if there were dynamics... those are rather important, in my opinion. Maybe it's just me, but once you get past the insane virtuosity, the songs can get pretty boring. There aren't very many layers.

  • Absolut Unbelivable...

  • OMG dont have a clue what to say but that I wish I could play like the both of them

  • I think bailey's harmonics are unmatched. Those 2 make a great team, they play on a whole different level.

  • Wow !!!

    What a sound !!!

    Top Score !!!

  • I can't wait to take some lessons from Bailey next year!

  • wootens such a beast...

i mean bailys good too...really good

    but wooten

  • si no tienes ni puta idea te callas cerdo k estos son profesionales

  • wow... perfect harmonics great playing

  • ya think ya can play bass an then ya see this!! :O amazing!

  • Wooten = Funk :)

    Bailey = Country :)

They're pretty amazing both guys... Have to go practicing now...

  • All they needed was donny to add some rock! :) and the blues brothers!

"We play both here.. Country And Western!"

  • best movie ever.

    "who are YOU guys!?"

-"we are the good ole boys"

"YOU ARE THE GOOD OLE BOYS!?????"

  • @lukasohlsson I goinh to so dont feel bad...

  • @lukasohlsson does bailey really play country? i always thought he was a big jazz player

  • @thecrashinghighways I think his more country here in this video. There were no particular jazz licks here (I think). You can't say his country either, he's so unique in his playing, so I don't think that you really can categorize him.

  • @lukasohlsson I disagree! I think either of them could play what ever the hell they wanted to! They are both that bad ass! I'd say they sound like those two genres that you stated in your post because they wanted to have two different sounds for this song.

  • @lukasohlsson i don't see how you describe Bailey as country except that he's from South Carolina...but they are both amazing lol

  • i give up im throwing my bass away!!!!!

  • 1:17 :') groove

  • This is GROOVE

  • The intro is just amazing...

  • awesome fingers!!

  • awesome

  • Those jeans are so freakin sexy XD

  • every time i hear steve baileys fretless solo..i go and pick up my fretles...but then i get amazed and watch it again...and again...and again...theni just forget about playing bass cuz i'm too wrapped up in this

  • мего

  • especially awesome ending

  • Quit tryin' to compare jaco to everyone else. Damn, why does everything have to be so competitive?

  • @KodokuShizuka We are not competitive! YOU are competitive!

Hahahah, sorry, deja vu,I had to say this (no matter what)... I agree with you!

  • @KodokuShizuka Thank you!

  • @KodokuShizuka - agreed. And you know what? As good a bass player as I am, and with the number of influences I have - I'm YET to even discover Jaco. I hate this whole "Cliff Burton was better than Jason Newstead shit." It's as LAME as the whole Britney vs. Lindsey Lohan episode.

  • Never said he was a God, just he created an innovative and completely new style that influenced a whole generation players of electric bass. Millions of musicians can play Bach, Beethoven & Mozart note for note. So what's your point? Jaco created a huge paradigm shift just like Hendrix did with electric guitar. They were millions of miles ahead of everyone. In another universe. Now go copy someone's homework, word for word.

  • It takes one jackass to ruin everyones time enjoying a great song.

  • This is my favorite off of the Bass Extremes album. It's so pretty, yet technically dazzling at the same time.

  • I actually very much agree with your hendrix refernce I use it myself when referring to jaco, and I actually agree with all of your points in that response, but my comment was in regards to "It takes 2 bass players to do what Jaco could do all by himself when he was in his prime" which in my opinion is severe exaggeration, as countless people could do it on their own.

  • Steve has such a beatifull sound.

  • @Nekronaut321

U'r right, he sounds like the best *-*

  • surely one of the best performances i ve ever seen.....steve bailey is a monster in 6 string bass and vic is surely the best....

  • Meu Deus esse cara toca demais

  • Comment removed

  • Steve Bailey is unbelievable.

  • 4:30 - 6:40

that is some of the most amazing playing i've ever heard.

  • super !

  • Increible......... vaya cuatro manos!!!!!!!!!

  • anybody know the chords??

  • there is a book about victor and steve.

it's called bass extremes, there are the chords and basslines (obviously) ;-)

  • Wooten is the oily reason I haven't bought a fretted 5-string yet...he has proven that there is very little reason for a non-rock bassist to own one.

  • you can tune it e-a-d-g-c if you don't need a b-string.

it gives you more options, or at least makes some things easyer to play. it's good to have one, but as you said: guys like vic don't need them.

  • just wow!

  • In my opinion, Victor Wooten is the greatest of all time...

  • Jaco (when he was in his prime) is hard to pass though. Two different players, different styles. I think Jaco did more for the instrument. Wooten wouldn't be Wooten without JP.

  • I agre with you...without Jaco, the modern bass playing wouldn't exist...but I have to say that although Jaco was very good, in terms of technique, Wooten is over him...

  • Vic has said Jaco was an important player, but I think he attributes more to people like Larry Graham, Stanley Clarke and his brothers. Jaco was only 12 years older than Vic, and Vic took up the bass at 3 (according to him at least!). Jaco became a bassist after a wrist injury at 15, before that he was a drummer and Vic has said he started playing bass at 3, so they started playing the same year.

  • victor was playing bass at 2 yrs old

  • ACTUALLY its been well documented that Vic was handed a bass while still tethered to his mother w/ the umbilical cord. the cord was then severed by Vic w/ one well placed swing of his 'ax'

it was completely irresponsible and unethical for the obstetrician to allow this but aren't we all glad he did?
