you can kind of see that he is using 3 layers, blending em together and adjusting the light thru the curves, every time he selects something he is using the feather so it blends better at the edges and he doesn't have to be exact on the selection.

other than that you have to play with it to achieve the effect that you want, there is no wright or wrong on this kind of stuff, he is painting with photoshop, he is the artist he decides what is good or not.
