Hey Marc what was the problem? I also have the same issue but I am getting a cylinder misfire code (P0302). Are you on the nycmaximas forums? Hit me up on there if you are. I am grimmax.
shit man i have an 02 maxima and it sounds just like that i do an oil change and it calms down for a sec then right back to that if you got yours fix and no the problem let me now
I'm suprised you're not having transmission issues. That's another common problem. I hope you take Nissan to small claims court and win. I drive a 4th Gen (1995-1999) maxima. It's been a great car and I've been a fan of Nissan ever since. Not anymore. I'll keep my Maxima and will NOT be inconveniencing myself with any of their new products.
And here's proof of Nissan's dismal reliability goal as told by Patrick Pelata, Nissan's executive vice president for product development in an interview with Autoweek:
While durability and quality are critical, Pelata says Nissan needs to be cautious of "overquality."......."Does it matter if the door handle lasts 10 or 20 years?" Pelata says, " No it does not because the person will not have the car after 10 years"
Engineered to fail! Poor quality and resale value. Dont buy Nissan
That's the noise of Renault's efforts in cutting costs for Nissan. Why spend more for a quality part when that cost can be passed to the customer. More than likely that noise is the timiing chain tensioner. The reason they go bad is because whoever Nissan decided to pay to supply their tensioners used a very thin and cheap plastic on the shoes of the tensioner. As the chain slides across it it wears it down easily.
2day when u buy a Nissan, ur buying a Renault's lack of quality.
Maxima used to be one of the most trouble-free cars. Not anymore!! Not since RENAULT partnered with Nissan in 1999. The 4th gen maxims ( 1995-1999) where the last of the stellar reliable ones. Google "Renault reliability". Renaults do not build their cars to last without problems. The Renault Alliance had black dots in CR in nearly every category. Same as with the Eagle Premier which was basically a Renault.
I had the same noise on my 2005 maxima... it turned out to be that the plastic guards on the timing chain had worn off and it was hitting metal on metal. After they replaced the chain it was like new again. Definitely not cheap though... hope this helps if you're still having the problem!
It's a timing chain tentioner issue... That is a internal problem not external... Definatly without a shadow of a doubt... Had the same problem in a 2003 altima.... Cost a pretty penny to fix but if it doesn't get fixed it's a wrap for that max....
@bobbosvid how sure are you of that, I have the same issue and was told i have a bad lifter and really aint to big of a deal. I also noticed it damn near goes away whenever i get an oil change done on it and it gets worse when im nearing the 3000 mile mark before im due in again....
@santiboricuamp I have a 2005 maxima I have the same noise nissan told me it was my timing an guides but when I get an oil change the sound goes away but like you said when you get around 3000 miles the noise comes back I jus don't know what to bro can you help me out

It could be your harmonic balancer or something inside the timing cover, tensioners and so forth
