Point is, I was a poser who thought she was goth/emo (because back then i didn't know the difference) as hell and was drowning in my own self-pity. I learned now, that you don't have to belong to a certain group. Be who you are, like what you like, no matter what. And if you happen to fall in a certain category, then just shrug it off. You will be labeled no matter what. Just don't judge others by their labels.

Well choosing to belong to an urban tribe means that you choose to be labled and judged on your clothing. People who belong to subcultures have many things in common - that's why they chose the same subculture. And i'm talking both about style and attitude. =) It's normal to judge someone based on the tribe he belongs to.The important thing is to give people a chance.

A helpful tip I learned when confronted by ignorance or conflict and I was trying to be the devil's advocate was using the term "we" rather than "you". By doing this, the person feels less as if they have been attacked and more as if they are being given constructive critisism by someone who cares about them. You should try it sometime. :)

I used to be Goth... or at least.. I think I'm a softer goth?
Point is, I was a poser who thought she was goth/emo (because back then i didn't know the difference) as hell and was drowning in my own self-pity. I learned now, that you don't have to belong to a certain group. Be who you are, like what you like, no matter what. And if you happen to fall in a certain category, then just shrug it off. You will be labeled no matter what. Just don't judge others by their labels.

Well choosing to belong to an urban tribe means that you choose to be labled and judged on your clothing. People who belong to subcultures have many things in common - that's why they chose the same subculture. And i'm talking both about style and attitude. =) It's normal to judge someone based on the tribe he belongs to.The important thing is to give people a chance.

for the most part i do agree with what you say. in one part we all know how teenagers are in high school and that speaks for itself. i normally do not judge people unless i known them for years. but what i've noticed about large groups of people is that they have this heard mentality that everyone is expected to believe in. noticed it from middle school through college. i think its the level of someones maturity that should be judged, but that seems to be overlooked. but i know what your saying.

well, i do agree with you're point of view. However, this is all social network based. Not that it isn't like that out there. Some people get easily offended or like to offend people a lot and it's completely stupid. I'm sure half of us will or will not own up to half of the things we say on the internet in "real" life. I think in the end people who really are what they want to be don't label themselves. Others label them. All you got to do is be mature and ignore it :)

@Distorsted Agreed. I always get labeled by my music alone as a "Queen of Rock"/ "Queen of Metal" because I know so many great bands from rock and metal's births until today. I hate the labels and just want to be left to be who I am and love what I love. I mean sure I have a love for dark clothes and all things dark and "scary", but that's just me. I hate all labels because you may meet a "real" goth/emo/etc. who may say, "Just because you wear black and like dark stuff doesn't make you goth!"

Very well said. Good luck convincing others to change. People will be people and there will always be jerks who stereotype based upon someone's clique or clothes. Stereotypers (for lack of anything appropriate to call them) are insecure and belittle others to make themselves feel better. Those that cry when it is done to them and turn around to do the very same thing are what we call "hypocrites". Great counseling for friends, but others give two shits about what some "goth girl" has to say.

i love your vocabulary and i agree. people in the darker less accepted cultures such as goth metal and punk, they get angry at people judging them and being cut down for the way they look then they start insulting "preps" the exact same way they hate being treated. so me myself i act the way people dont expect me to act. i walk into class first day and the teachers look at me like im gonna be a problem, then they realize how respectul and intelligent i truly am. people must stop judging

I categorize people in two main groups:
1: Idiots/ignorants
2: The other ones...
If I meat a dude at the street and he calls me, let's say "you fuc*ing goth no-lifer", then I just simply put him in category nr.1, and I think "fine, he's an idiot, then I won't have to deal with him anymore"
If the next person I meet doesn't say anything to me, then I simply put him in category nr.2, and I think "awesome, at least he's not full of prejudice, and he might be okay"

I agree with you about the whole thing about calling people "posers". i myself wear alot of black and like dark art and music and such, and have a fondness with the occult for reasons i'm not sure, but on the other hand i don't really consider myself Gothic, though i have been labeled that... but on the other hand my cousin who is a hipster or whatever and we really have nothing in common is my best friend and people seem to find it weird when they us hanging out, LOL

i could not agree with you more. i'm not goth by any means, but i dress a little different than the average teenager, and because of that people think that all my friends dress the way i do and people think im this depressed "emo" "scene" kid. i also get told that because i wear skinny jeans i'm gay? i have no problem with homosexuals, i accept everyone, but i dont really enjoy being told im something im not.

I like goth music(Blutengel, VNV nation) and wear black often. I don't know if that makes me goth. ALso vid coming maybe. Basically labels should be seen as adjectives rather than a noun. I.e. a prep is someone who is preppy but not a prep i.e is someone who has prep tendencies.

They fail to have the ability to see the truth. People see the uniform but not the person. They're so stupid they are easily fooled by items of clothing. if only there were more people that think the way you do....as i listen to metal, half of the people i know cant accept the fact that i like other music like Sisters of Mercy, RHCP, NWA/Dr.DRE or (dare i say) Hole. I was once ostracized from a group of people that i once considered great people because they saw me wearing a Hole t-shirt. unbelievable. The stigmata attached to being your own person in my area is just appalling.....and sometimes just flat out fuckin depressing....

I like your way of thinking :) You should always be polite and act with grace and dignity towards others. As a matter a fact; if someone is out to insult you, there is nothing more annoying to them than you smiling and replying to them in a kind manner. I'm not saying you should be false or lie, it's all in the presentation. You have a better chance to keep you dignity intact if you refrain from swearing and yelling. Don't be rude, be awesome :)

First off, I would like to say that I enjoyed your video. It was very informative.
A helpful tip I learned when confronted by ignorance or conflict and I was trying to be the devil's advocate was using the term "we" rather than "you". By doing this, the person feels less as if they have been attacked and more as if they are being given constructive critisism by someone who cares about them. You should try it sometime. :)
