I think that whether you prefer Naturi's or Irene's version is completely situational. They are two different situations in the movie, requiring two different types of performance, so while Irene and Naturi both did amazing jobs at this song, Naturi's version for me is very real and emotional, and Irene's version is just kinda plain, though that is not a bad thing, it is still absolutely amazing. I couldn't decide which was my favourite if you held a gun to my head.

so this is the musical progress in 2010? It's kinda bit overdone compared to the raw, heartfelt and virtuoso performance of Ms. Cara in 1980. Naturi Naughton is a great singer no doubt, but this was Irene Cara's great moment that has captured us for decades. It's really kinda hard making the lightning strike twice especially if you're just gonna sing it higher and wavier. But I'll still give this a thumbs up.
I song this song for the graduating class of 2011 @ Verbena high school. I changed the words to acknowledge them instead of saying baby belong to me I said hold your head high you'll succeed. Very powerful song I must say! Naturi Naughton song this beautifully! :)

so by the time that she was going through the runs, the song loses its potency.
it felt as if the song was too contrived, too rehearsed and processed, as if she was asking all of us to pick our jaws from the floor.
sometimes, less is definitely more.

This song is one rare song but it is meant to be song with heart and soul.
When you sing it remember to sing it the way it is written but make it your own.

so this is the musical progress in 2010? It's kinda bit overdone compared to the raw, heartfelt and virtuoso performance of Ms. Cara in 1980. Naturi Naughton is a great singer no doubt, but this was Irene Cara's great moment that has captured us for decades. It's really kinda hard making the lightning strike twice especially if you're just gonna sing it higher and wavier. But I'll still give this a thumbs up.

I song this song for the graduating class of 2011 @ Verbena high school. I changed the words to acknowledge them instead of saying baby belong to me I said hold your head high you'll succeed. Very powerful song I must say! Naturi Naughton song this beautifully! :)

This is my first time hearing this version and honestly, it's not that bad. It just didn't want to make me play it on repeat like the original version did. Naturi has a beautiful voice, don't get me wrong,but I just don't think it is "better" than the original. A worthy cover though.
