  • Hispanic/Latino what it means. Hispanic actually was the name of Spain. Look up Roman Hispania and Spanish is based of Latino. Example Bella is the same meaning in Italian and Spanish said differently though. Bell A and in Spanish Bella is said more like this bay a the 2 LLs don't make a L sound and sound more like a ya. Look up the history of Spain or Roman Hispania on wikipedia

Is Hispanic Latino does refer to a specific race.

  • "I remember hearing from a friend of mine a few years back that Celia Cruz who is originally from Cuba being played more in Brazil than in her native land of Cuba. How is that possible? And Cubans being divided by complexion.Afro Cubans segregated from so called regular Cubans. The World is just messed up period. Those boxes they would have you fill out to state what race you are "Are ridiculous"!Migration and Slavery changed that centuries ago! It's foolish! But racism is too!""

  • IDIOTS!! they don't know that most of our culture as latinos is amaizing influeced by africans??...just hear the latin music...my god!!

  • "In my country they have only 60 languages"

    lmao

  • Dr. Jowers Barber was my teacher during a summer class I took at UDC....She taught me history and she´s BRILLIANT. Yay!

  • The girl in the last part who said that in Univision all they put is the White actors is somewhat TRUE.

But you have to remember this is something that is done throughout the WHOLE WORLD. White people are used as the prettiest, sexiest, and best looking for T.V and all sorts of ads.

100-150 MILLION of Latinos are AFRO (AFRICAN DESCENT) out of 550,000,000.

That is a lot isn't it?

So why aren't their voices being heard!

  • I am so proud and relieved that blacks of latinamerica we are starting to discuss these issues about our own identity. I hope that more of these discussions are brought into the classrooms and discussed. But I most mention something,

  • so to all you so called latin. do you know what latin even means? go do some research on that for me please. and by the way if some one is from asian race live in ice land what do you called them? all asian people accept that they are asians, so what is wrong with the black ones who happen to speak spanish..oh yeah they have been blind, they never stood up for themselves so therefore they keep dinying theire african roots but they keep the african drums, rhythm, dance etc..

  • rather, why dont they just call asians yellow, because they arent part of that negative dyad between white and black, realize black only exists because of white, not because it stand alone

  • that's because they are dumbfucks and insecure about being a proud black person who speak's spanish,if they don't wanna acknowledge who they are,let the kkk do it! when they get called a nigger, then try coming back crying to us,we will refuse them,no matter what you speak,if you're not white,to them you are still a nigger, wake up people,we need to stick together!

  • And WHO THE FUCK are you to be issuing "certificates of blackness"? The Black God? Insecure? Why is it that dumbasses LIKE YOU have to be spewing their SHIT like little reaffirmation and confirmation rituals "I'm black, I'm black, I'm black" like if you don't stop saying it you will turn white or something? Now THAT IS being INSECURE. And all this white brainwhasing shit? Pathetic. You identify with your African roots NOT for what you say, but how you LIVE IT everyday.

  • One's African roots are in the way we speak, in our traditions, our culture, not just the skin color. Dominicans live their African roots proudly AS part of the MIX they REALLY ARE.They show it NO matter who hates it. One of set of genes over another?White racist supremacy shit! Dominicans have had to deal with crap from black AND whites because of their mixed origin as a people. And go fuck yourself, since we don't plan to become bitches of either white OR black supremacist agendas, cocksucker.

  • i visited your page, and was very alarmed at the comments you received,no wonder people hate you, you're certainly not the brightest, now are you goat fucker? lol...must be that great DUMBMINICAN 3rd world education....GO HAITI!!!!!!!!!

  • stfu dum black bitch

  • The real issue with us peoples of color, mixed, black, any other non-Caucasian minority is that we spent WAY TOO MUCH TIME moaning about race-related problems, jumping from one seminar to another, having this or other scholar spewing clearly biased views, using them as an excuse for this or that, WHILE WE ALL should be demonstrating BY EXAMPLE that as racial groups we ARE NO DIFFERENT to succeed given the right conditions. But hell no, it's easier to say Oprah or Jordan as a measure of success!

  • Finally, if you can't HANDLE DIVERSITY of language and heritage within the black and mulatto communities, go tie a cement block around your neck and jump into a river. Very easy to say black first and SCREW the rest. Deny everything you are BUT your race? Dominicans know VERY WELL of black exploitation of OTHER peoples of color - not a secret but a very HARSH reality all over- very well since they had to endure it to have a free nation. Who are you trying to fool? Not me at least. Game over.

  • uhm......ok? i still think you are in denial, you have too much self hatred in you,you keep mentioning "mixed" as if it's a race,it's not so stop it....lol,you're a black man,now stop acting insecure and be proud,im glad that there are different types of cultures and languages in black people,we can teach our african brothers and sisters,so we may prosper greatly.

  • getmoneystayreal... I feel sorry for you my friend.

You're just angry because you live in a segregated society like the USA and you're trying to spread your hate to the rest of the world. Love diversity and you feel better about yourself. I'm Dominicano and we are the mix of Tahino, European and African. Your people lives in the USA, my people are Latin-Americans. Take it as a life lesson.

  • you talk about DUMBMINICANS being proud, and knowing their african roots....then why is there such great racial tensions between your island you share with haiti? is it because haiti dominated your side of the island? alot of dominicans treat haitians poorly, these are your fellow african people we are talking about! self hatred run's in alot of DUMBMINICANS blood, tracing all the way back to trullijo.

  • fuck all this bullshit, i really dont give a shit what im mixed with.

    I REPRESENT BLACK PEOPLE period.

AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE is the best, i wouldnt wanna be apart of no other CULTURE but BLACK :)

  • typical ppl buying into labels. i have never once called myself "mixed panamanian" (i have a lot of mixes) I just say panamanian end of story. all this "afro latino" and "latino" crap...oh please ppl get real! if you're american then u are american end of story. I don't follow labels. so dumb.

  • Thank u! More ppl shud think like u

  • You people have to understand, if ytour born black in america..no matter where your parents are from..but im sorry..United States is an African American Influenced Country..so the ones that are here are proud to embrace that..from clothing to music to sports, people imitate us, comercials use our shit. I had a white women come into the barber shop past year, and asked can i braid her little white sons hair..the kid had to be about 10 years old..she cant help if hes embraced the culture.

  • psssh, african americans know shit about their culture, a new hairdo doesnt bring you closer to the answer- sports clothing, music, is there something else your missing lol

  • lol WOW what antics you go on! its not that serious There plenty of Latinos of all colors! USA doesnt acknowledge the Darker skinned either! its just the way it is! TIs all over except in Nigeria nad Brazil! because majority of their women and men are Dakrer complexted its silly Your Latino Your Latino no matter your texture! Cubanos, PRs, Dominicanos, Panamenos, Columbianos etc all are people of color so get over it love who YOU are and repp ya Latin and Afrikanic roots!

  • Okay, well Dominican, Cubans, and Puerto Ricans while all near each other are different (with different dialects too). And even if they share similarities, they are just as proud to be who they are than anyone in "Latin American" Just beacuse my family is Cuban and lived next door to Puerto Rico does not mean it's okay to call me Puerto Rican. I am not. It's just rude. For example, an Afro Cuban or Afro Panamanian is more likely to be okay with being labeled "Black" before many Doms or Ricans.

  • Um, you are mistaken ! You are going by what you see here in the U.S. You also have to take into the fact and consider the ancestry of some of these Cubans and Panamanians of African descent. A very small minority of Black Panamanians are of West Indian descent from over and up to 100 to 150 years ago. And many Black Cubans are of Haitian, and Jamaican descent ! That might explain why !

  • I think that Afro-latinos/hispanics should embrace both black and hispanic identities and culture. Im Black and Mexican and and I proudly acknowledge not just one but both cultures. Afro Latinos are basically just that Black AND hispanic due to common racial mixing in the Spanish colonies.

  • This is soo crazi the issues come from Willie Lynch! who tainted and brainwashed latin america first then north maerica thats why dark is bad and light is right! its all silly Latonos STAND UP! I am light latina and black but I look more Euro latina than Afro Latino It doesnt matter we know who we are embrace it and move on U dark Latinos are Not IGNORED! I see Zoe Saldana, Tatyianna ALi Christina Milian etc come on now stop it

  • Zoe Saldana and Christina Milian do not count and neither does Tatyianna who are darker, but not the darkest and have features and hair types that denote their mixture, which makes the more acceptable to mainstream media. Zoe is the only one who represents her Black Latina roots publically and in the roles that she takes. Tati and Christina are fully assimilated Black Americans and while they may be very much proud of their other heritage do not talk about it other than as a a footnote.

  • lol WOW soo touchy yo soy latina y Negrita! I am proud! you need to be too! this whole panel is thoughtless actually! I mean Dark or light if your Latina USTE LATINO! I dont understand how Tatyianna Ali,?? ARe you serious? she is dark latina Christina Milian Alfonzo Robero!, etc come on now USA doesnt even acknowledge the DARKEST of the Dark so get over it! move on be proud and live

  • Soy yo "Blatina" tambien, so I know what I'm talking about. I did not deny say they aren't Latina, I said they are not considered LATINA in this country. Tati and Christina don't even speak Spanish and they have grown up in America as Black US citizens with hispanic roots. And while Tati is dark there is clearly a racial mixture in her genes the same with Zoe and Christina. What AFRICAN looking Hispanic do you know of in this country who embraces their Blatino culture FULLY that is public?

  • are you saying there is a latino culture ? , one more brainwashed by the media . I'm ecuadorean and I do not have any cultural relation in common with mexicans or caribeans who like to call latinos more than any one else because they are ashamed of their black heritage , they are similar culturally with other in the caribean islands (food , music ,etc ) .We are very different even in the continent .

  • Because of the same language we can understand each other but culturally we are different , regionally we have some similarities .

Dominicans and puertoricans feek attached to latinoamerica because of the language but cultrally they are similar to their neighbours ironically now the media call latin music to african caribean music .

  • This week, Afropop Worldwide explores some of the little-known Afro-Latin sounds from countries that have largely escaped notice in the global scene. Whereas just about anybody can pinpoint a Cuban salsa groove or the boom of Brazilian samba bloque, few have ever heard of the Bolivian saya or Uruguayan candombe. Producer Marlon Bishop shares some experiences from his travels in search of lost sounds and stories

    from some of Latin Americas

    black minorities.

  • True, but there is some overlap as we are talking about groups of people all conquered by the Spanish and the influences are similar. But I guess it'd be more appropriate to say there is an US American Latino culture, as we're all grouped together here and there is closer association than in Latin America.

  • wait so is ok to be african-american, but is not ok to be afro-latino???? wth!! so if an afro-latino cant be latinos then african americans cant be americans point blank!

  • My best advice is if you're black or any other race, the greatest love of all is love for yourself.

  • I have been to the dominican republic and personally know many afro latino's. Anytime I bring up the word "Black" they all get defensive and say "im not Black Just dark skinned". I even remember once when in the DR a person who clearly was not white came up to me and called himself a caucasion. It seems all afro latinos want to identify with the european culture they are part of. To all of you out there take a better look in the mirror you no good uncle toms. Stop denying your heritage, i dont

  • We Dominicans are being denied of our mulatto heritage, considered to be an aberration by both "purists" blacks and whites. We are 75% mulatto people, 16% white -many white Hispanic- and 11% pure black. There are a lot of agendas interested in denying these facts for certain purposes. And people can make distinctions here. You will of course see the occasional mulatto pretending to be "whiter". But the fact is that we are all ethnic Dominicans! And the fact is that WE LIVE by our African roots!

  • dude will you shut the fuck up,regardless of MIXTURE,black genes, are DOMINANT,making you related more to your black side,im mixed to,but having black genes, which are strong...im black ameircan, only difference between you and me,is that you speak spain's language, because they butt fucked the dominican republican, and you are of self hatred and insecure about your AFRICAN culture!

  • what is afro Latino is it black people that speak Spanish or is it Latinos that look black but is Spanish.

  • oh my god is the question for real. LATINOS THAT LOOK BLACK BUT ARE SPANISH?

SPANISH PEOPLE ARE FROM SPAIN LIKE AMERICANS ARE FROM AMERICA. JUST BECAUSE PPL SPEAK SPANISH DOESN'T MAKE THEM SPANISH

AS FAR AS THEM LOOKING BLACK. THEY JUST DON'T LOOK BLACK THEY ARE BLACK. BLACK LATINOS, AFRO LATINOS, BLACKS BORN IN LATIN AMERICA:

LIKE AFRO-AMERICANS. BLACKS BORN IN NORTH AMERICA. blk latinos aint spanish just like blk americans arent english

    RACE NATIONALITY ETHNICITY

    3 DIFFERENT THINGS

  • Wow, Let me break it to you ! Afro Latinos are refferring to those Latin Americans of black African descent. And yes they are Spanish speaking and are fully Latino while at the same time black!

It is just like if you were to say African American. Americans of Black Descent and they are English speaking !

  • maybe u should say wassup to them first.

  • How come I dont see these cats on campus? And how come none of them ever said wassup to me? Im the only Afrikan Latino (besides my man D) that I know at UDC. And Im the only one walkin around with the Cuban flag in plane site. But ive neva seen any of these fuckers or has anyone walked up to me and say wassup, but yet they talkin bout makin a connection....wuteva.

  • Self hating part black...

  • im cuba boricua nigga and as u know most of our people are black and not white as people think

  • exactly!

  • I'm a proud Afro Latino, born in La Ceiba, Honduras.

  • Yeah I heard that there are alot of Afrikan people in Honduras. I wanna go there some day.
