My opinion, what ever that's worth, Thick as a brick was their best! If you follow their albums from "This Was",up to" Aqualung", you'll see a progression. Then "Brick" just Hits you over the head. It's one long song. I don't think that was ever done before, even by ZAPPA. Then "A Passion Play" came out, and to me it seemed like an attempt to mimic "BRICK". It fell flat, even though there is some great music here and there, but "BRICK", I don't think there is one bad spot in the whole album.
@waynedanberry I agree. It sounds much more dated, however, this part here is one of my faves on this album. I think it was a big mistake to release another epic, long song directly after Thick...He is SO talented though! He gives great sax! LOL They sound flawless!
I saw this concert and tull was the tightest band at that time, passion play is a very complex recording that i have listen to 100's of time..its a concept , you have to listen to the entire recording (sometimes many times) before you can get it.If you do the reward is the star of david, only upside down. peace
The point is they were a talented band of equally matched and spirited musicians rather than a central egomaniac surrounded by a bunch of financially dependent and hence nervous sessionists
If only Ian would make a proper attempt at producing a concert with a bit of imagination again instead of trading off the same old tracks that we dutifully turn up for every year and get served up with the same old tosh when we could have something like this.
Thick As A Brick sounded like a bunch of unfinished themes thrown together on an album to me.Passion Play sounds like a matured Thick As A Brick with much better continuity.I really think it was the apex of the band's entire career
as much as i love this album (always my fave - and i even interviewed Ian once)...i can see why critics found this tour a bit much. Still amazing. and wish i was there. but kind'a too much of the same thing for too long. Still, the historical value here is invaluable
Thanks for this historic video. I saw the show at the L.A. Forum when I was 15. It's sort of a mystical experience seing this footage now. Future concerts had a hard time living up to this spectacular show.
This concert began my life long love of Jethro Tull. I saw them in Boston Garden in 73. I've seen them 20 or so time since then but this is my absolute favorite album of all time. It's #1 on my desert island list.
You knocked me on my tail. Now I've lost MY spectacles. I almost cried. The audio sucks. Do I care? NO! I've SEEN this in my head since I was 16, & I'm 46 NOW! I started going to Tull concerts in 1976, so I missed this one. APP & TAAB are so indelibly worn into my memory I can sing along no matter how long it has been (CD) & I know ALL the words. I still hear the spots where my VIYNL had a scratch. This project was worth all the effort you put into it, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Sorry to disagree, much as I love Brick, Passion Play is the one I find myself still playing after all these years. Both are great, though!

I agree totally. So unique, unforgettable. It was more than a concert, it was an experience like no other at the time.
So many were critical and it got poor reviews now looking back there is new appreciation.

My biggest regret is I never went to any of their concerts. I've heard they were among the best of the era!

Hell yes. Passion Play is an amazing piece of work. I got to say, I disagree with those critics. This blows Thick as a Brick out of the water.

THANK YOU.
The critics couldn't wrap their small, closed-minded brains around this MASTERPIECE.
This was a classical epic on the scale of anything Mozart or Bach ever created.

This is my all-time favorite part of any song. It's also where I got this screen name.
