  • Whenever johnny cash remade a song, he made it vastly different than the origanal. I really respect that.

  • @chuckups Agreed, he doesn't just cover a song, he makes it his own in a unique way. It doesn't devalue the original in any way.

  • a nice song with realistic lyrics.

  • Profane Sass did a really sped up version of this song, look it up they are a really unrecognized band. Not arguing better or anything just thought if people like this song they might enjoy hearing it played a bit differently than usual.

  • @Unknown0321 Wow...Thanks for the heads up! Not heard of them before.. they're awesome :)

  • who wrote wayfaring stranger? cause ive just heard so many different versions

  • @roquefort88888 I don't think it's a formulaic trapping, but a really good interpretation. His stressing is really good. You could say Ed's version is a little less implicit than Cash's which is carried by the lyrics, but to call it formulaic is a little unfair. Takes talent and understanding to arrange that well.

  • @roquefort88888 no! ed puts loads of emotion into his songs, shut up ed is amazing

  • Comment removed

  • i purposely put this on lowest quality so it would sound more true

  • Ed Sheeran...is this what they mean when they say "pretty white boy blues"?

  • @TheGreatWolfFenrir Point is, it was not written by Cash. It's older, as it originated from before Cash' birth. Cash was a legend, a true music maker, but he did not write this song (although his version is absolutely great). I prefer Ed's version, but that's just my personal taste. If you like this version more, then go ahead, I'm fine with that.

  • I growed up with johnny` music and when I listen I feel I`m kid again. Johnny is AMAZING he must to be a model for everyone

  • Ed's career was made in what 2011? so one year of fame and people think he can even be compared to the genius that is Johnny Cash, piss off you little groupies, Ed is a good Artist but comparing the legend and yes he is a legend, to Ed is a straight up insult. And don't cry about equal rights to dislike and like, he should come up with his own material instead of doing a Johnny Cash song.

  • @TheGreatWolfFenrir First of all get your facts straight. It's not Cash's song. I prefer Cash's version but clearly you know fuck all about Cash because he's covered a vast amount of songs which leads me to believe your just another faker pretending to care about the "legend" and will never be open to anything innovative! Well done Ed for getting people to listen to Cash's version and not letting a great song die!

  • @TheGreatWolfFenrir You kinda blew your point when you suggested it was a johnny Cash song!

  • @CatrinnnFrameee

Can we not put the entire younger generation in one category. I am in that generation and Johnny Cash is my preferred version of two. Ed hasn't done Cash a favour by making it 'Hip' and 'fresh'. Cash does well enough on his own.

  • Love both Ed sheeran and this version!

  • People, could you just please fucking stop argueing which version's better? Everyone has his own oppinion and if you don't like Johnny Cash odr Ed Sheerans version, then just don't listen to it.... I like both of them, in it's own way! I just want to fucking enjoy this wicked music and please shut the fuck up, twats...

  • @JoiiLife

Glad you think like wonderful Country Gospel music. I'm glad you are expressing your appreciation. I don't want to sound pressy but perhaps you could think again about some of the words you've used. Thanks.

  • @MsMaynes you know what? i was just so pissed off to see all these comments just arguing about something completely irrelevant...Maybe i shouldn't have used some specific words but actually i don't really care...

  • @JoiiLife

I totally agree that it's annoying to have these debates over which version of a piece of music is best. Let's enjoy the music and who wants to listen to the same performance from every artist who sings the song? But I feel the word you used detracted from your perceptive and excellent comment. Also to many people that word causes great discomfort.

  • @JoiiLife I agree. No one is better...they're just different.

  • Love this! Im singing it for a concert in March. (Folk music theme!)

  • @roquefort88888

I agree with you, and that's why I prefer Almeda Riddle's version. Feels a lot more honest.

  • @roquefort88888 WHAT?! Look, he hasn't copied the song because he has changed the style, and he hasn't named it as his own, its like a cover. YOU HAVE AN OPINION , SO TO OTHERS. I admit there seems like a lot of emotion in this, but personally i don't like this because its boring :) - Ed has made me like the song though, by making it more modern. Ed Sheeran has done Johnny Cash a favour by making it more known to the younger generation like me. Much Love.

  • Ed Sheeran did his own version of it. Don't give me that shit about he doesnt "get the song" your not some music God. I prefer Ed Sheeran's version better and yes he get's the song that why he did his own fucking version.

  • Johnny Cash and Jack White really Get this song - you can hear that in the way they sing it

  • @roquefort88888 no offence but you don't know if ed "gets" the song or not. You can't hear his thoughts, so don't act like you know everything about him, because you don't. but i do agree this song is amazing especially johnny cash's version

  • @roquefort88888 Tim Buckley's version is also worth a mention- the Works in Progress version is the best!

  • He sings like an old man, but this version is better than Ed's.

  • @roquefort88888 I think versions are different, and therefore, both appreciable, so stop arguing guys, enjoy the music!

  • the heck is happening with my comments?

  • @roquefort88888

    amen brother.

  • @roquefort88888

    amen.

  • @roquefort88888

    amen.

  • Great version. No doubt that Burl Ives' is the best, but Cash's is classic.

  • Hi Johnny...

We are glad you are posting videos. Your version is much better than Ed "Sirhan-Sirhan" Sheeran's. I have an Olson guitar. I also have a Bashkin fanned fret which I got during the fanned fret craze. You are welcome to play any of my guitars at any time.

  • every one has different opinions and i prefer ed sheerens version is better this version is good but i prefer ed's more

  • i Miss my mom and my brother...

  • @roquefort88888 Musical appreciation is subjective, and to claim anything else is pure asshole-ism.

We interpret songs and read what we like into them. We compare them to our own experiences, and draw on them later. It's a fantastic part of being a human being.

Some of us have the ability to project our interpretation back into the world through a creative outlet.

The more music there is, the better the world is.

Take it, or leave it. Just don't claim you're right because that makes you wrong.

  • @jrave5000 this is a blues song, when i hear sheeran sing it, i dont feel anythig, while cash and jack white make me wanna cry when i hear it, that is how it is meant to be sung

  • @mubs42 You've missed my point. This is a blues song, but an artist can take it and do what ever their creativity allows them to. And you may like one or other or both versions. It doesn't mean the artist 'Didn't get it'. In this instance it means you don't get it.

  • @jrave5000 Actually it is a spiritual song. Sung by slaves picking cotton or tobacco under the hot sun in southern american fields. Praying for deliverance from suffering.

  • I just love cash's version better then anyothers its just personal and deep, and this song should be played with a guitar not rap or anything or like Ed Sheeran's version , just what i think^^ i miss johnny cash

  • I came here tonight by way of H.P. Lovecraft's version ('60's rock-freaks check it out, you'll love it), but I gotta say... like Sinatra, Brother Ray, and a very, very few others, when JC does a tune, it become HIS.

  • So, I am listening to this song and I scroll down to read the comments. I immediately regret that decision when I read "Ed Sheeran's version is better". I have no idea who that is so I find it and listen to it. It made me want to punch a baby. I nearly vomited.

  • @Snapsman

Agreed. The guy can sing.. but .. leave Cash's stuff alone :|

  • @solkatlol Cash didn't write this either...

  • @Snapsman i think you can't really compare the two version.. Ed Sheeran made his own version of this song. I'm not saying Ed Sheerans version is better, it's just diffrent.

  • Got to admit this is my first hearing of this by JC, its deep and the music is touching my heart, Im here because Ive just heard Ed Sheeerans version first and had to check it out, Ed also does this song justice ,his is very cool/hot/good/respectful/interesting.

  • great song. great singer. great meaning.

  • ed sheeran best version by far

  • i think Ed's is better..

  • the best version....

  • blusy and ohhhh so good thx for the share, Mike

  • Interesting to see Johnny Cash do a song to the tune of Psalm 35C.

  • A lovely rendition... and a personal favorite to play & sing. R.I.P. Johnny Cash. Alby, Aged 42 years.

  • Stop all your verbal violents and start enjoying this lovely song..

  • Best version.

  • the best song

  • FUCKIN A

  • That would be true,

    > Implying I make comments to boost my ego

    > Implying age isn't directly related to grade

    > Implying commenting on is the same as talking too

Unfortunately for your logical consistency, none of that is true.

  • Pretty lights should have added this to his wayfaring stranger remix

  • See a lot of comments both pro and con in regards to Ed Sheeran version so I might as well throw in my 2 cents. Bill Monroe and Johnny Cash are this song. Ed sings this song. Big difference. Look at Johnny's face at 1:32 and you will see what I mean.

  • I miss you Mommy!

  • Oh Johnny Cash.... Where've you gone? We need you!

  • Ed Sheeran has an amazing version of this song!!

  • Ah Johnny man!

  • 2 sheeps disliked this song... why the fuck they live really.

  • @MihranTamrazian Probably in the hope of one day teaching you some grammar.

  • @macsuibhne02 FUCK YOU!!!! Is this correct grammatically??!!

  • Listen to the Ed Sheeran version its quality!

  • Comment removed

  • This version is a little too... white. It's gotta be " I'm just a'goin'..." etc.

  • @sorchah See the caption to the video here: youtube.com/watch?v=S5sHrOTXX0s&feature=related

It provides an interesting discussion on the origins of the song.

  • This version is good, but still... Eva Cassidy's version, to me, seems the BEST EVER RECORDED!

  • i find johnny cash and his style of music pretty...dry. ed sheeren on the other hand is so soulful and so lush

  • @Lizrichings Both of which are amazing.

  • i wonder how johnny cash would feel upon hearing ed sheeran's cover of his song..........

  • Ed Sheeran's cover of 'Wayfaring Stranger' brought me here. I think Ed's version is better though.

  • @lilmissnumber There is no way that this Ed Sheeran cover of this song even comes close to ranking up there with Johnny Cash's version. I tried to listen to his version of it and I couldn't even make half way thru it. Some people have no taste AT ALL in music anymore.

  • @9wiskers Oh shame. Are you dissing my future ginger husband? I would risk ginger kids for that man! And you say he is a bad artist?! SHAME on you. Just shame.

  • @lilmissnumber PLEASE USE PROTECTION. Thats all we need, more of that crap running around, and yes I am dissing your boy OPIE.

  • @9wiskers people like you don't understand talent when they see it. Why dont you buy a loop pedal and do Ed's version, and sing it as well as he does. ill give you 3 years ?

  • Ed Sheeran version is amazing!! :))

  • @Br4Dwhite its actually Jamie Woon's version of Wayfaring Stranger

  • Many Johnny Cash songs create a strong emotional reaction in me, but this one ranks way up there. There have been so many versions of this song but I think this is my favorite. Thanks for posting it.

  • BLACKTHORN brought me here... got goosebumps when the music of cash plays...

  • too bad im the only one in my whole school that likes this music..

  • @crunchtime14 Where are you from?

  • @reddeadRstar1 its fine i know what you mean but because i heard ed's first i like it better.

  • johnny cash sings from the soul thats why he is the legend he is, you can just hear it in his voice is permeating

  • Wow! Johnny Cash is awesome!

  • Ed sheeran is better sorry had to be said

  • @camz4ever I'm not hating and I know Ed is amazing and his cover is really good but you can't beat a bit of Johnny Cash!

  • @camz4ever hahahahaha there has been some dumb stuff said over the years but that comment has to be up there!

  • @camz4ever he sings like a girl though

  • am i like dreaming?

    -0 dislikes

    -0 spam

    that's what im talkin bout

  • @daMANdaMYTHdaMEDVIN maybe i will dislike this now and its all your fault lol

  • My Aunt Fran's funeral in February 2011 featured this song sung by her grand-daughter, a small white girl who sells this song like she was born in New Orleans 50 years ago! Fran would have smiled.

  • R.I.P.

  • what a song!!

  • "There is no sickness, no toil, nor danger, in that bright land, to which I go"

my friend died few days ago, this song will be his. he was 22. <3

  • @poissonCHA1 sorry to hear that, you couldnt have picked a better song for him though! take care of urself and dont let grief consume you. losing a friend is harder than losing family sometimes, just remember that they are in a better place now and that all the pain of this life is now gone.

  • @poissonCHA1 feelin ya bruv....RIP to yer mate.....the fact ya felt to mention him here spreads the love.......chin up bud! ;) peace

  • @resin807 No one asked for your age, thereby you can assume no one give a shit.

  • @MrRedstonefreedom i never said how old i am, and you must feel like a real big man on the internet talking to some one in 5th grade, what an asshole wow

  • @MrRedstonefreedom Honestly, what is all this ill feeling towards people stating their age on YouTube? Sure, it's not important, but really...people shouldn't be fucking assholes about it.
