  • I like the flipped it version...but I prefer the original jazz version

  • i can't believe that throughout my 16 years of life, i havent heard this song until now.... FUCK IT, erykah badu is the best female singer of all time, hands down. props. im gonna blast this in my car in the summer

  • @emcleod2192 : Excellent explanation! I've heard the lyrics over and over and have been passively interpreting them for some time, but yours is right on the dot, in my opinion. I guess I didn't truly understand everything because I haven't experienced any of this before xD But wow, suddenly this song is very beautiful once again. Thank you.

  • I think her beautiful soul shone out and she attracted someone unexpectedly. She gave him a chance and he started to play games with her head. She caught on and her independent soul realized that no man was going to control her.......she is her own person. I love this song because it reminds me of my experience with men!

  • turn my back then you sliped me a mickey

the world is mine when i wake up

  • Double entendre at its finest!

  • The one dislike must be the person who tried to slip her a Mickey.

  • Ha! I always thought this was the original version.

  • ilove this woman :]

  • "certainly not me"

  • I thought it was about date rape too! Otherwise I don't understand the Mickey bit. Isn't she saying he tried to get her drunk and take advantage??

  • @lecifbaby For some reason i have the memory that this song is about slavery. About how the Africans were enslaved and told who they would be without their permission.

  • if this iznt the best song on her album idk wat is then....u got the beat just right bobbin ur head...its more like a city beat...cruze @ night with this beat

  • i love both versions. But I love this one a lil bit more.

  • Good song!

  • So i took it as she was seeing somebody and he ended up fallin for her, she wasnt looking for a love affair and he's trying to change her now that they are together... she talks about independence "the world is mine" "i dont need no one looking after me" so thats what i got out of the song Corn195.....i hope this helps : )

  • @cutiewanda yea it helps... i guess everybody has diff interpretations tho.

  • to me its talking about her independence and how she was forced in to something i suppose "love affair" @corn105 i wouldn't think she was talking about date rape, you can slip a mickey by being sneaky its just a metaphoric you can use saying someone tricked you.

  • Is this song about date rape?

  • @corn105 If you listen to the her live album. When she performed this song, she explained that "we were not asked to come to America." Referring to Africans being brought to the Americas as slaves.

This song, in my opinion also speaks to the continuing, so called, "white supremacy" that black people living the US face.

As with any art form, the piece can be interpreted any way you like.

  • ok.... but the reason i interpreted it that way is because she's all like " I was not not looking for no love affair" "Slipped me a mickey"...

  • thank god someone else heard it.

  • neo soul at its best

  • I like this certainly (flipped it) version way better than the 1st certainly version.

  • @stronggman80 Yea way better this is the shyt!!!

  • amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
