hunger is true fear, love can't feed you she is in love with the fisherman but he is also poor so i would go to a man who would feed me and my baby than starve to death.

Moral codes were even more strict in those days, so just imagine how difficult it would have been to go against them. When you are starving, with no one to come to your rescue, you do what any living creature does to survive. you steal, lie, even eat other human beings. After all they don't get government help in those days and most of them have seen family and friends starve to death.

Some of Britain's forces salute palm up, but yes, in the U.S. Navy they salute palm down.

I just have trouble seeing the romantic side of the clarke/mary relationship.

I love marys character.although she uses that solder she done it to stop her kids from starving.she puts her children first and i think anyone would do it if they were in that situation.release she has the guts to stand her ground for her kids.

true.. but when she had sex with the prison guard for food, she cared for just herself..which was ignoring her morals. It would also encourage such behaviour among prison guards... Anyway.. I'm just being overtly analytical ;)

But it was my opinion (I think I'm allowed to like or dislike a historical figure /character), and I think your judgment on me is harsh, just as assuming I live in a house with AC and a 'ready meal' on my lap. You do not know me as a person, you only know that I wasn't sure if I liked a character or not based on what I saw. So please, if my comment offended you so much, you can always report it.
