@901Jetta --- I have seen data that shows how those spacers can help with HP and MPG but I just haven't tried one out yet. Have you seen the GadgetmanGroove's groove videos? I have thought about this too but right now the transmission is out in my Ranger. So for the time being my projects are on hold...
@erikblazer13 --- Yes, see the links in the description. Over an extended testing period I got on average a 10.88% gain in MPG. This mod really helps the performance of my truck and a save a some fuel to boot.
I did this and ran into a little bit of trouble . removed the insert . when cold outside(40F) motor cold I had little backfires in the intake not bad just little ones enough that I was worried about the mass airflow sensor . I do think there was a little more pickup but just a little . i put it back in and the intake backfire stopped . so that's the way it's staying
@CactusBobsPlace --- That seems odd to me, backfiring in the intake indicates a timing issue or a valve problem. Neither one of those problems could be caused by this mod. Backfiring in the exhaust could be caused if it leans out the A/F ratio enough. You might have a bad IAT sensor and/or a bad MAF sensor. In my experience this mod works great. I should also mention that prior to this mod I replaced the cat converter with a high flow model, this might have also had an effect on my system.
@BlackDogSociety Well be carefull. Sometimes they put little air breakers in vehicles to help atomize the air for a cleaner burn. Looking at this setup I dont think it matters if you had that in there or not. GM had these little aluminum honey comb lookin things on the 3.8 throttle body instead of that weird ford bullet thing.
@masster64 ---LOL, at the I made the video I had read that this insert was used to reduce the air intake noise, so that's why I called it a muffler of sorts. What reason other than reducing noise did it serve? Please enlighten me...
ok, let's begin with a common sense observation about your part removal: why would Ford insert a quite hard to manufacture bullet-shape part ? just to make their life more miserable? were they so stupid?
now about the aerodynamics part: where else have we seen the bullet-shape part? well, in the center of any propeller and into every jet engine intake. why? for (NO turbulence) = (laminar flow) which helps also for increasing the air speed.
@masster64 --- I already told why Ford put it in there, it was to reduce intake noise. As far as your "it was to increase air speed" supposition you do know that this is not the same configuration seen on props and jet intakes. Also you did see how this mod gave me an increase in MPG over a 28+ week study didn't you? I can tell you I have a much better acceleration response indicating a gain in HP. Reducing air restrictions has been proven to increase HP and MPG, That's what this vid is about.
then try a more radical approach just for testing further MPG increase: mount a proper diameter hose directly on top of the intake manifold or carburettor (meaning no air filter) and guide the other end of the hose to a more cooler zone (below the right headlight or so). try to resist the RAM admission temptation, it will only help sucking rain, leaves and crickets...
I do have the same exact mod I learnd about it a year ago and sorry but I meant to say wrap your headers with exhaust tape not cool wrap, any way the cooler the under hood temp is the more horse power also a electric fan right now with just a heat shield on the air muffler and the mod described I'm gettin 24mpg from 20mpg
@xandercage7681 --- Thanks for the advice. About the exhaust wrap, I'm assuming I'd have to remove the header and wrap each exhaust tube separately, correct? As for my MPG gain before the mod my MPG was 23.01 averaged over 14 tanks of fuel, now it 25.59 MPG averaged over my last 14 tanks of fuel...
Great vid but not to rain on anybodys parade it's not a cold air intake you just open the intake up if you realy want to do something easy but cool wrap your headers in exhaust tape all the way down till your cat it reduces under hood temps a good 40*f
@xandercage7681 --- Technically speaking all I did was open up the intake so more air can get into the engine. The Ranger already had a CAI system on it. I also replaced the cat with a high flow model from Magnaflow. I need to get a high flow air filter and muffler and see what difference that makes in MPG. The cool wrap idea will have to wait, I have plans for a mod that will require the heat from the header. Over-all though this mod so far has given me more power and has saved me fuel...
@dillonmuhman --- I don't know if you'd get a fail on an emissions test, we don't get our vehicles tested in Arkansas. From what I've read about CAI I believe the emissions should be better. I think it would pass...
@irondmax --- I'm getting an average of 25.51 MPG over my last 14 fill-ups. My baseline test before making this CAI mod was 23.01 MPG over 14 fill-ups. I don't think this gain has anything to do with fooling the computer, it's about reducing the pumping losses. Less energy is used to suck air into the system, it's actually running more efficient, less drag on the intake. Actually there are times I think it's getting too much fuel and I'm working on a fix for that...
@irondmax --- That's hard to say. My 94 2.3L EFI Ranger got better MPG than my 87 2.3L carb Ranger, I guess it depends on the vehicle. I like my 2.3L EFI engine better than the carb version. However it does make it harder to add HHO. I'm still playing with ideas on consistently leaning out the system...
do you have 4 direct injectors or the one injector where the carb should be?throttle body or direct injection. if thottle body, you could limit the fuel pressure maybe.
@irondmax --- 4 direct injectors, I thought about reducing the fuel pressure but I'm looking for something more variable on demand. I'm thinking increasing the air flow even more with a RAM air set up and gating part of the air flow around the MAF at cruising speed while adding HHO. But I'll have to add a computer controller like the arduino. I'm a programmer so it won't be too hard to do...
@H2Truckers --- That's great. I love the smooth acceleration and extra HP on mine too. I have continued to chart my MPG ever since I did my conversion. Over 32 tank fulls I average 4.97% more MPG than my baseline average MPG. The best I've seen was last week when I posted a 13.25% gain! Soon I will make another video showing these numbers. mean while look in the description for links to the new chart...
Thanks. I plan on adding H2 or HHO at some point once I figure out how to effectively lean out the system. Right now I have to put the transmission back in it. I hate replacing a flywheel...
There are some real nice drycells out there thats good that mack 1.5 lpm you can start there to see how it works and than lean it out in small steps. If you like I can help you some.
@AngryNotSoOldHippy --- None taken, it's not your fault that you are a raving loon. What kind of a person would I be if I held your affliction against you...

i went a step further and made a homeade ram air in my little 2.3L ranger....worked good, especially on cool days like 40F =D

Yeah, you made it more free flowing.
The biggest thing you did is make a resonating chamber out of what was a muffler.

maybe you fooled the computer to turn the gas flow down to match the air flow.
what mpg does it get?
my 4 x 4 mitsibishi truck gets around 28 mpg.....factory

cool.
i drive a carberated 87 missubishi 4x4.2.6 L
28 to 32 mpg.......all factory and 310,000 miles.
its factory heated fuel in the carberator.
has 3rd valve.....it small recirculates exhaust
windage tray in the oil pan.
i think it may have some lean burn computer stuff .
i say fuel injection decreases mpg.......because liquid gas does not burn well. and injectors squirt fuel directly on the piston.
what do you think?

@BlackDogSociety i want to see you change the computer.... i want to know how.direct injection..... really difficult. change your injector port size.
or adjustable spring tension inside the injector.
buy some at the junk yard and open em up.
warning though on hotter sparks......piston will melt. i done it when i was 17.
hotter plug and leaned out the carb......wrong mixture of air i guese. just a dumb kid. got good mpg though. i still lean em out
