@philippusII odd comparison- historical fact of Mayan sacrifice is that only warriors captured in actual battle (among few select others) were worthy of the heart removal scene depicted; the Spanish burned people alive after torturing them for days into confession, an estimated 2,000 within the first decade of the Inquisition. Personally, I'd prefer to die by having my heart ripped out with the belief I'd go to live in Mayan heaven than be tortured, burnt alive and then go to hell forever.

This movie talks about mayan civilization. The public who is not informed about the Mayan culture could go out of the cinema thinking that they were not any more than a few brutal & wild people. But they were great more than it. Gibson commits a mistake on not showed this information in the movie. They were a very advanced civilization, but this movie doesn't even scratch the surface of what this powerful civilization was. Instead of it, it shows what nowadays we call wildness.
