you can. an arduino microcontroler costs like $30 and the rest you can scavenge. automated ones are pretty simple once you learn some programming

wow, thats really amazing. those guys mustve worked intensely to get that good. ive gotta hand it to them, robot sumo is very interesting, and looks pretty difficult to make the robots too

The vast majority of Robot Sumo competitors here in Japan are students at technical high schools. They take the contest seriously, put in a tremendous amount of time and effort, and are often sought after by the major companies like Toyota. In most other countries it's looked on as a casual sport, or intellectual exercise, but for these guys it's a way to show their skills and advance their careers.
