everyone here forgot about del Monaco in this role... I can't understand... He was the greatest dramatic tenor ever and this role was one of his best.

i have listened to opera for over 60 years. to this day i cannot seperate great from greater. i love them all. corelli and del monaco are wonderful in this role. i cannot compare them i just enjoy them.

Del Monaco as well as Domingo and Carreras makes splendid portraits of the young french poet, but none of them can match Corellis.
If you listen to the complete Santini-recording of Chenier, you´ll find Corelli in very fine shape througout the whole opera.

di stephano and bergonzi were not in the same league as franco corelli . he just blew them away in every department . listening to bergonzi trying to get some high notes in certain arias is quite embarresing. correlli on the other hand masters all the arias. bravo franco truly the greatest of all time and forever

A close 2nd best to Beniamino Gigli's CHENIER. I love the way Corelli ends the aria with a sostenatto on "amore." Gigli was the only one (that I know of) who used word emphasis which gave l'Improvviso the dramatic dimention it must also hold. BRAVO CORELLI though! I did say CLOSE and very close 2nd best.
Wow, not many people would consider Gigli the best Chenier, but I agree...Gigli adds much eloquence to role, which is absent from many famous interpretations...he is supposed to be a poet after all. Corelli is fab too

Recordings don't tell everything. Quality, size of voice, character, integrity, movement & the effect on an audience need describing too. Have you heard a great performance by this singer live, without a mic? If so please post an objective description to add the wonderful YouTube archive before the memory is lost for ever.
How I wish I could have been there to hear Farinelli entrance an audience with the power of a single note, but we do at least have Charles Burney's marvellous account.
My favorite tenor by a long shot. He was reputed to have terrible trouble with his nerves and was hugely difficult to manage. Had to have his dogs with him at each venue which resulted, before proper pressurized aircraft, in him not being able to fly, would you believe!!

I don't like his voice, upper register is very good, but everything else is so ugly, he sings like an old man or like a young man with a potato stucked in his throat.
Perfect and outstanding performance of this difficult aria. Absolutely GREAT. Corelli was amazing and I also just discovered that he was largely self taught. That alone is an incredible story in itself. No opera singer in the world today can equal a masterful performance like this.
Totally right,the emotion that he puts in this particularly aria is unsurpassed, extraordinary! Not even pavarotti, that almost everyone loves (and although he was a lyric tenor),can walk in the shadow of Corelli! This is a lesson of how to sing one of the most difficult dramatic roles, or how to sing opera in general..fabulous! The version of Del Monaco,the other GREAT dramatic tenor,is also remarkable!

Actually Gigli gives a very good interpretation of Improvviso(probably the best for a tenore lirico).That being said,to understand the true meaning the aria in full opera performance Franco is no doubt the perfect combination of voice and interpretation.

Gigli was a true master but, "personal opinion" a little 2 feminine 4 my tastes, franco was greatest to me, too bad we dont have more like them nowdays, mediocrity seems to be the norm now
I agree... my favorite is Mario Lanza(listen to his studio rec of this) and those great tenors like Lanza, Corelli, Caruso, etc; make most of today's tenors sound thin and reedy. Although Lanza is my favorite, I think Corelli recieves far less recogniton than he deserves

I have heard carreras, in your ears he might be better, becuase perhaps lyrical tenors are more your taste, whereas dramatic tenors suit my taste. Music is a subjective thing. But corelli's interpretation of this particular aria is what the composer had in mind.
Somebody said before, it shows all his testosterone! That is absolutly right... He sand with his balls! Try to listen his Romeo and Juliette at the met... what a feelings. I think we had the THREE TENORS at the time: CORELLI, BJOERLING, DI STEFANO... can you imagine them togheter???
Corelli and Bjoerling, yes. Di Stefano worries me. I have a fabulous record of him singing E Lucevan le Stelle - it is the most sublime piece of vocal history I have on vinyl. But much of the rest is not good.
my favorite performance of anything ever. Corelli with his immense yet slightly unrefined style, sacrificing some diction for great power, was born to sing improvviso.
Although he often looks nervous and uncomfortable in these 1971 videos, this is one case where it appears that the music carried him outside of himself, leading to a passionate and fierce performance.
He was wonderful and this performance was incredible, but I think others compare to him, particularly on LINE; there was something labored about his singing, and unrefined in some cases, like in Il Puritani, for instance.

Uno de los grandes tenores de nuestros tiempos. Ejemplo de técnica perfecta. Quizas gracias a esa técnica, aunque sufriese de miedo escénico, cosa habitual en el artista, podía superarlo.
Perdóneme mi español malo, pero nadie le ha respondido. Toda la vida, Corelli sufría horriblemente del miedo al público. Estaba una condición nervosa muy grave, y al fin el no podía soportarla.
Gracias por la respuesta. Me estuve leyendo una pequeña nota biográfica sobre Corelli, y me sorprendió enterarme de que un señor con tan buena presencia física sufriese tal miedo escénico: una verdadera lástima. Por cierto, su español está mejor que el de muchos españoles.
Only a few tenors can give this Aria all the intensity required and about these tenors only a few more can transmit such emotions like Corelli, definitively the best Chenier ever!!!
Bernardo de Muro made an excellent record of the Improvviso for Victor in 1914 - possibly my favorite rendition. However, for more recent exponents of the role, Corelli and Del Monaco are hard to beat.
Domingo's performance in Vienna (released by Bel Canto Society) compares favorably with the best of them.

Gigli was the only one (that I know of) who used word emphasis which gave l'Improvviso the dramatic dimention it must also hold. BRAVO CORELLI though! I did say CLOSE and very close 2nd best.

Wow, not many people would consider Gigli the best Chenier, but I agree...Gigli adds much eloquence to role, which is absent from many famous interpretations...he is supposed to be a poet after all. Corelli is fab too

Recordings don't tell everything. Quality, size of voice, character, integrity, movement & the effect on an audience need describing too. Have you heard a great performance by this singer live, without a mic? If so please post an objective description to add the wonderful YouTube archive before the memory is lost for ever.
How I wish I could have been there to hear Farinelli entrance an audience with the power of a single note, but we do at least have Charles Burney's marvellous account.

My favorite tenor by a long shot. He was reputed to have terrible trouble with his nerves and was hugely difficult to manage. Had to have his dogs with him at each venue which resulted, before proper pressurized aircraft, in him not being able to fly, would you believe!!

Perfect and outstanding performance of this difficult aria. Absolutely GREAT. Corelli was amazing and I also just discovered that he was largely self taught. That alone is an incredible story in itself. No opera singer in the world today can equal a masterful performance like this.

Totally right,the emotion that he puts in this particularly aria is unsurpassed, extraordinary! Not even pavarotti, that almost everyone loves (and although he was a lyric tenor),can walk in the shadow of Corelli! This is a lesson of how to sing one of the most difficult dramatic roles, or how to sing opera in general..fabulous! The version of Del Monaco,the other GREAT dramatic tenor,is also remarkable!

Actually Gigli gives a very good interpretation of Improvviso(probably the best for a tenore lirico).That being said,to understand the true meaning the aria in full opera performance Franco is no doubt the perfect combination of voice and interpretation.

Gigli was a true master but, "personal opinion" a little 2 feminine 4 my tastes, franco was greatest to me, too bad we dont have more like them nowdays, mediocrity seems to be the norm now

I agree... my favorite is Mario Lanza(listen to his studio rec of this) and those great tenors like Lanza, Corelli, Caruso, etc; make most of today's tenors sound thin and reedy. Although Lanza is my favorite, I think Corelli recieves far less recogniton than he deserves

I have heard carreras, in your ears he might be better, becuase perhaps lyrical tenors are more your taste, whereas dramatic tenors suit my taste. Music is a subjective thing. But corelli's interpretation of this particular aria is what the composer had in mind.

Corelli and Bjoerling, yes. Di Stefano worries me. I have a fabulous record of him singing E Lucevan le Stelle - it is the most sublime piece of vocal history I have on vinyl. But much of the rest is not good.

He was wonderful and this performance was incredible, but I think others compare to him, particularly on LINE; there was something labored about his singing, and unrefined in some cases, like in Il Puritani, for instance.

Corelli non e' solo la piu' bella voce da tenore mai ascoltata,ma era anche un uomo molto intelligente che preferi fermarsi nel bel mezzo della sua carriera e tornare il piu' grande!Sicuramente deve tanto per questa sua tecnica perfetta al grandissimo "Giacomo Lauri-Volpi ",inconpianto tenore di un epoca dove il cantare era ancora un'arte e non un Bussiness!!!

Uno de los grandes tenores de nuestros tiempos. Ejemplo de técnica perfecta. Quizas gracias a esa técnica, aunque sufriese de miedo escénico, cosa habitual en el artista, podía superarlo.

Bernardo de Muro made an excellent record of the Improvviso for Victor in 1914 - possibly my favorite rendition. However, for more recent exponents of the role, Corelli and Del Monaco are hard to beat.
Domingo's performance in Vienna (released by Bel Canto Society) compares favorably with the best of them.
