Why Clubs NSW has uploaded this clip is beyond me. Abbott's arguments against MPC were pretty much smashed by the 7pm Project team. Add to that the poll indicating that the vast majority of their viewers support MPC, and Clubs NSW have uploaded some awesome ammunition against their anti-MPC crusade lol
@rebeccak971 smashed by the panel? Just because you speak louder doesn't make you right. Actually raising your voice and talking over people is a sign of weakness. And LOL, you're using the 7pm projects poll as some sort of indicator of the publics mentality? That's like using a poll from the 2GB website to back up your case.
Abbott has got to be the DUMBEST, most-dangerous, most bloody-minded, unprincipled opportunist would-be alternative PM since the worst days of Peter Reith in the Howard Govt in the late 1990s. One minute this dick-head argues vehemently AGAINST the 'nanny state' .. ie govt intervention / intrusion. The next minute, he's crying out FOUL against the Gillard Govt for NOT intruding into the current QANTAS dispute. So, WHICH is to be, Tony, you mug !! What a disgrace you are ...
I'm 30 seconds into this clip and they half 2 facts wrong, we do not have 20% of the worlds pokies, Vegas ALONE has more that we do (We have just over 200,000, There's 207,000 in Vegas) and 40% do not play the pokies, its 22%...
@twig1981 Actually the accurate figure is 20% of the worlds machines in Australia. There aren't many countries in the world that have poker/slot machines. This figure is an independent figure from the productivity commission so no they didn't get this fact wrong.
@brentoneccles That's completely incorrect. Japan has over 400,000, Vegas has 207,000, (Can't find figures of how many in Atlantic city) London has 180,000. We're 3rd behind USA and Japan for total machines. Take into account places like Monaco, Russia and other assorted European countries where exact numbers are untraceable, I think you'll find that we are now where near 20%
@twig1981 It's not incorrect. Do you want me to start referencing independently sourced, proven figures because I'm more than happy to take that road if you want the definite documented proof. The documented evidence is definitive that Australia has 20% of the worlds poker machines. Now would you like me to prove it for you or can you do the research to verify it for yourself? It's very easy to find. In 1999 we had 180,000 which was 21% of worlds poker machines. It's HIGHER than that now.
@twig1981 While I had a laugh this isn't a laughing matter. We're talking about people's lives here, in some cases. There's no inherent attack on gambling in the Government's policy. It's about helping problem gamblers by giving them a means to limit their spending. Abbott lied when he said the scheme didn't work in Norway, it has shown to be successful and hasn't destroyed the slot machine business there.
@brentoneccles I agree entirely, we do need to help those who can't help themselves. I just don't believe that people should be forced into anything. And I do believe that this will hurt clubs and those that work there. And after it's all said and done I don't feel that this will even work. How can people have a spending limit on pokies when they can just go and put it on Keno, lotto, TAB or internet gaming? Especially when they can set their own limits anyway.
@twig1981 Other forms of gambling don't attract problem gamblers in the way that pokies do. Whether you're an Abbott supporter or not is irrelevant, the point is more to that he's the archetype of opposition to the plan, so to speak. Your whole 'libertarian' thing that we shouldn't force people into things is odd. We regulate the use of seatbelts, traffic lights, the side of the road you drive on, etc,. This reform is about giving gamblers a 'seatbelt' at the pokies, for those with a problem.
@brentoneccles While at the same time forcing those that don't, to comply with what they're told to do. That's dictatorship. And yes, we have laws for seatbelts, lights, side of the road, bike helmets, drink driving, and how we treat other people. But they're laws, there isn't a speed limiter on a car, people have a choice. Choice is freedom. Sometimes people make the wrong choice. But that's their right.
@twig1981 Yeah, and consequence for speeding and such things is fine or jail - which in your language is 'taking away someone's freedom to do something' destructive by applying consequences to that behaviour. No different with this gambling reform. Nobody has to suffer in any way. For people to have to commit to how much they'll spend is hardly something to complain about when it's going to help those who actually do have a problem. Thank God Ozzies don't buy the "libertarian" line you take.
@twig1981 Saying that I or anyone is seeking to do that with this reform doesn't make it true. If all you've got in response to a public policy debate are cheap attack slogans you're not going to go very far.
@brentoneccles Side note, I don't care what Abbott said. I'm not an Abbott supporter. Just because I disagree with another wrong move by the government, doesn't make me a liberal.
@brentoneccles Lies and denials are Abbott's bread and butter. The social impacts of pokies are so grave, that any intervention is worth it. Problem is that a very few powerful people are making a bucketload out of the misery of players.
7PM project- typical left wing garbage program wanting to control what people do with their own cash on their own time.

Congrats to Charlie Pickering - about time journalists started challenging the ridiculous lies and distortions that come from Abbott's mouth.
Need more of this in the media!

Everything Abbott said in this interview came from the brain of Anthony Ball. A gutless and uneducated stance. Low, even for him.

What an absolute lie to say it hasn't worked in Norway. All the initial reporting into their scheme seems to show it most definitely has worked.
