I love the fact this guy got shat on for wearing aviators! He probably did need them because its daylight. But i think the fact that he was trying to be top-gun shone through so strongly that everyone can see it. hahaha- bloody awesome. I bet the instructor thought the same thing.

@timtncc Your not that smart are you? I have blue eyes, they are sensitive to light even on a cloudy day. I can't even look outside without sunglasses on because it makes me squint and will give me a headache. So I wear sunglasses all the time. Just like this guy probably does. <_<
Even though the instructor put the camera down on landing to help keep the aircraft aligned with rudder I'm guessing, I heard that stall warning go off on what seemed to be perfect timing, you looked confident during the approach too, nice one. Wish the video went that little bit longer, I can only guess you heard a nice chirp on that landing and not a hard thud :)
Arjennoxic may be right. My eyes are rather sensitive to light, even if it is cloudy. I usually have to wear sunglasses while driving or going for a walk, especially when there is snow on the ground.
@1216saab A normal approach is typically at 3 degrees, or roughly 600-700 fpm. Therefore the distance from the runway at which one start's the descent depends on the altitude being flown. In a 172, a normal approach speed is about 65kt, or 75mph, meaning that the plane is flying at 1.25 miles per minute. Now, if you begin descent at 3000ft, then a 600fpm vs will mean a 5 min descent. Travelling at 65kt will therefore mean that the descent will be started 6.25 miles from the runway. :)
@scanmannz Thanks....I see math plays an intricate part of flying. How do you determine how far you are from the runway without a GPS or Vor? Is it educated guessing?
@1216saab Usually you can descend visually using the PAPI as a reference (if your unsure about what it is then you can easily look it up) and in light aircraft your descent path can be easily adjusted to stay within a proper envelope. Without GPS or Navaids, your distance can be determined either by: 1) Asking ATC for your position, or 2) Using Maths again - calculating an estimated distance using airspeed and flying time.
@scanmannz Thank you, I plan on starting lessons in the near future and only have" FSX for real world pilots"(book) to study from. It actually explains quite a few things but I wasn't sure which would be most practical for my first flying experience.
@CincoSnare76 I believe not. I hate people saying that. When people wear sunglasses that doesn't mean they wanna be cool. When they do so, it's simply because they need to because they've some kind of problem with their eyes (highly sensitive to light), like me for example. When I wear no sunglasses at day I can see no contrast, it's not to be cool mate. :)
@timtncc Usually,we prefer to wear shades because it eliminates glare. Its winter and you definitely don't want the snow reflecting light on your eyes whiles you're up there :P
@timtncc Sunglasses aren't only to be used to block sunlight but to repulse ultraviolet rays (which are invisible). This can happen when you are looking at a white wall outside, at the beach in the shade, etc. Now for pilots, sun or not, wearing sunglasses is nearly a practical/medical choice.
@timtncc Does this look like night? Nope, it's day.

At what distance from runway do you start your descent? Is it also a 500FPM descent as well? Thanks.
