Heavens to Alma Reville! THANKS for posting this! As a longtime fan of the work of the late great Alfred Hitchcock, it's peachy to finally be able to see this (which it would seem is the least seen & known of his major studio releases). Dig those tall stovepipe hats....crazy, man, crazy! You've MADE my day & week! CHEERS, mate!
To me this is the weakest of Hitch's movies. Both Bergman & Cotten are miscast.Leighton however is perfect & steals the movie. Wilding a most underrated actor is also most effective.
everyone keeps saying under capricorn is hitchcock's greatest failure. but i love it for the great actors (especially ingrid), though it doesn't have the usual mystery and suspence of alfred hitchcock's films. thank you
Why is Tasmania missing from that map in the opening credits? And Captain Cook was not the first European to "discover" Australia, there were Dutch explorers before him.
Look for Hitchcock in the beginning, he's in the parade scene in the town square wearing a blue coat and brown hat. 10 minutes later he's one of the three men on the steps of the Government House.
I second that emotion! He's VERY good in that period piece set during the time of the American Revolution. Turner Classic Movies shows it every so often (since it's a 50's MGM movie, they own it as part of their vast film library). I watched it there last year. THANKS for your comment! :)
I've never seen this film - how is the american version so different from Hitchcock's vision? Does this version contain scenes that the american version doesn't?
American Version is different, because of the difference in color. The color of American Version is completely washed out. This Italian Version is completely faithful to Jack Cardiff's cinematography.
This film isn't a thriller. Many people consider this film as one of Hitchcock's weakest films just because it isn't a thriller. But French Critics consider this film as one of Hitchcock's finest films. As for me, I love this film. This is Italian Version. And it is very close to Hitchcock's Original Version.
It wasnt Coch who discovered Australia, it was probably the Vikings but also China were among some of the first.

Joseph Cotten called this 'Under Cornycrap'.
Hitchcock did not like that.

I find it HILARIOUS that Tasmania is not on this map of Australia, I know may Tasmanians that would be very pissed off about this

@IETCHX69 Long time ago, I read a review of Under Capricorn by an Australian critic. From what I read, he liked Under Capricorn a lot.
