That is indeed very ingenious. And a great option to the popcorn popper which only roasts a couple pots of coffee per load. Thanks for sharing, now I need to source some stainless steel and a heat gun!
must cost a lot of energy lol buy it better ! cut the grass or clean your car better play with your kids do something ,it ll cost you another heating gun soon !!
Here's a mid-winter update: January 3, 2010, 10 degrees F with a fairly decent wind. I roasted 2+ cups of green beans, in these oputdoor conditions, to a Full City roast (into the 2nd crack) in only 11 minutes. Not bad!
I used the exact same setup pictured in the video. The only thing that went faster in these conditions was the cool-down of the beans!
Yes, that's probably true, thanks for makign this better. It actually roasts to well into the second crack in about 10 minutes, as is. During the winter months, add 5 more minutes onto that. Your suggestion would no doubt speed things up and make it more resistant to ambient weather conditions. But actually the holes in the drum are not large enough for the chaff to go through. Thanks for the post!
I must say this is ingenious; however, the popcorn popper method works great for me..... of course, i can only roast 1/2 cup of green beans yielding 1 cup roasted beans only.

@pabbananna I advise going to some garage sales to get what you need!

The energy isn't bad. In warm weather it only takes about ten minutes to roast a pound. And it's delicious!

Next November, try roasting chestnuts, I'll bet it would work great. Nice ingenuity, thanks.

LOL. I can see Bing Crosby singing "chestnuts roasting in a mini-cement-mixer"!

You could retain more heat and roast faster if you enclose the drum in a second container like an old pot. The chaff would collect in it as well.

That's great! I love your way of describing it, "mini cement mixer." That's it exactly!

After watching your vid I made a Porky roaster too!!! I looked at a few different ways of doing it, but I like your mini cement mixer the best.
I used a widow winder motor and a big stainless stock pot.
Ive done a couple of roasts with it and it works great!!!!!
