@Macocio actually.... i think it kinda would work o.O now this is just my opinion, but salt and those other things are melted inside of the water right? but still most of it is water, so hull would simply repel that water... ON THE OTHER SIDE (still just my opinion and keep in mind im 15 ;) ) wouldnt the ship just slip right trough water and hit the bottom of the ocean? actually it couldnt even set sail... the second it would be put in water it would go down like trough air... just my opinion...
@LittlePervazord its density wouldnt change (well maybe a little due to the coating but nothing significant) so it should still float,i dont think it would make too much of a difference to how well the boat worked efficiency wise but that second bit is just me saying what my brain thinks. i am a 3rd yeah student doing physics if thats important
@nccflorin23 Dunno wouldnt the boat then have to 'push a lot harder since it will have to cause the displacement of a lot more water ? The initial effect of 'dropping' such a boat in the water would, i guess, cause to to 'hover' ever so slightly in a 'pit' of water, but then to be able to go forward wouldt it have to displace a lot more water than simply 'slicing' through it ?
Ofcourse you could just limit the superhydropic material to the sides, and maybe that would indeed give an increase
@Pwntzyou But water doesn't just roll off of metal like that. The application isn't solubility it's repulsion. That's really something interesting to look into, even if the actual applications of it won't be of much use.
Do they have one for air? that woud be so awesome

This should become available for purchase around mid-2012. It's called NeverWet.

What if you took a paper bowl and made it hydrophobic? Would the water just constantly run around?

If a superhydrophobic surface is placed on a hull of a boat or ship, will it minimize the drag and encrease speed and fuel eficiency?
nccflorin23 1 year ago 101
@nccflorin23 what about the salts and other minerals and metals which sea water contains? Nice proposal though!
Interesting vid =D

@nccflorin23 I do believe metal is already a hydrophobic material, since it really has no solubility

@tekawaman yes, because the bottom would be hydrophobic, while the top not, making the hydrophobic surface to search for dryer areas.

@nccflorin23 You cant make it last long enough since it would become damaged. But a sail on a boat .....
watzupdawg 1 month ago
@nccflorin23 It would have a noticeable effect, if the design was already optimized to reduce profile drag.
