Imo, If your always going Cross-court then the net guy is going to Poach the Ball down the middle and put away easy points. So when im playing Doubles with a Friend against friends i always Do both I do a few Cross Courts and a Few Down the line shots. Even if i dont win the Down the Line Shot i keep that Net Person alert and Ready for a down the line shot. That way he cant Poach easy Shots.
my theory? If you have a consistent shot down the line, go for it. You can shake up the net guy with a few "won" points from his side, with a few solid blasts right at his racket. It also adds a little more to the "borrrrrrrrrrrrring" game of doubles.
i see what the guy in this vid is going for, he's not talking about a net player that's going to try and poach your return. hes talking about the "net player" on your opponents team thats just in that position while his partner serves
Wrong, you hit crosscourt most of the time to pull your opponent wide so your partner can put it away. Worst thing to do is hitting the ball to the net guy when you are at the alley or when the ball is short.
@wind1357 i agree, when you hit the agressive ball crosscourt instead of to the net guy you do 2 things, attack but if your ball is not good enough you are also deffending, your partner will be there to cover a big chunk of the court ( he is placed right in front of the player that hits the ball) putting the opponents in need of thinking to execute a precise volley, that is an advantage knowledge for the limited amount of responses possible, so you can prepare to make your next move
One thing that REALLY helps...having a backhand slice with kick to it =) I've had people TRY to smash mine out of the air, only to have it land at their feet lol. It puts the other person off balance when they go for it when it does kick.
Kinda odd tips, but I guess that for people that don't really think. A big rule of doubles is that don't hit it to the net person unless the ball is short and/or they cannot volley well.
