Great clip! I NEVER get tired of listening to it. These guys are awesome and Isaac Freeman just rocks it with that booming rich bass. His voice has a lot of presence and volume even without amplification. Great vid!
The Fairfield Four is one of the best classic Gospel groups of all time. This was a fabulous performance - I just can't get enough of Dickie Freeman, one of the best basses ever. Thanks for posting this.
I agree with hoover 4000. If anything this audience appreciates the Fairfield Four more than others because they are also all singer of 4-part harmony. There is genuine respect for the music being sung. Thanks for posting.
I am not a practicing Christian, but I am a musician; therefore I know a good sound when I hear it. These guys rock, and it don't matter if you're Christian, Buddhist, Taoist, Muslim, Jewish, black, white or any other denomination/race you wish to acknowledge or mention, this SOUNDS GOOD. Enough said.
Younce was pointing to the tenor, Rev. Willie Richardson, when Richardson turned towards him. Younce was just letting Richardson know he was the MAN. That kind of tenor singing was hugely influential on the 1940s and 50s white gospel quartets. The members are Left to Right: Rev Willie Richardson, Robert Hamlett (I think), Wilson Waters, James Hill, and Isaac "Dickie" Freeman.
THATS MY GRANDAD willi richardson LOVE HIM RIP TO U GRANDAD I LOVE U WITH ALL MY HEART ALWAYS PS THATS WHERE I GET MY VOCIE FROM I WANT TO BE JUST LIKE HIM
@NissaKissa1 my condolences to you and your family. i've loved/listened to the fairfield four for many years. I have their cd "Wreckin' da House'....and i truly love hearing these gentleman of gospel wreck "Dig a Little Deeper"....the live performance on that cd is untouchable. I sing baritone/bass and can't touch what I hear when these gentlemen sing......especially love the accapella harmony......this is what I call sangin'!!
@NissaKissa1 You were truly blessed to have him as your grandpa. Everytime I see a video of them I just want to hug him. Are any of the members in the group that performed in this video still living?
@xjimmybxable I concur. Gaither says just the word black like he's mocking ebonics and the crowd looks like they're watching a minstrel show. If they truly loved this music they would have been moved spiritually rather than pointing fingers at the performers.
I hate that they had too be called a black quartet group. If they were white they would not have been labled. Enjoy music without describing race or style.
There is only one universal language in all the world and that's music! You couldn't sing this anywhere and not grasp the attention of others or make them smile!
This group has been very much loved since the 1940's by all as they were featured on WLAC Radio, someimes each morning. My father, Willie Lewis, was a one-time member, and Rev. Sam McCrary's 4 daughters, The McCrary Sisters, now have a rendition of this song on their new CD, Our Journey. They are amazing as well and can be found here. Watching many of the singers around them here over the years, this is the kind of fun they have when they get together. Nobody was making fun.
This is the Best Black Gospel still alive and singing. We miss the members that have gone on over Jordan, but this video is TOO MUCH. The devils backside gets sore every play.
@xjimmybxable: You, Jimmy Babble X, are an example of what happens when young Millennials spend too much time twitter-texting and "hanging out" online, instead of mixing about in the flesh and blood world--where the ability to read and learn human motive and emotion can only come from engaging the full spectrum of humanity--You look a man in the eye, man to man. None was making fun of these men. They were caught up in an inspired human joy that trancends race. Could you not fully discern that?
@xjimmybxable I know it seems like they're laughing at him, but I can tell you as an A Capella singer that when you hear a sound like this it just brings out the joy and laughter in you, especially to see the old saints rock hard like this! I wish there was a "Love" button!!
@xjimmybxable They ran into that initial reaction frequently in their career. I say "initial", because that reaction usually lasted about as long as it took for them to sing the first stanza. I had the privilege of seeing them numerous times during this iteration of the group, & they were universally loved - once you'd heard them sing ;).
@xjimmybxable I don't think so at all. I think that people are just MESMERIZED by the groups "unusual" musical abilities and theirs is just a spontaneous reaction.
@xjimmybxable ~~GRACIOUS......NOBODY AND I MEAN NOBODY IS BEING MADE FUN OF OUT OF THE AUDIENCE.......THEY WERE REJOICING, SMILING, LAUGHING, SINGING AND LOVING FAIRFIELD FOUR.........GRACIOUS.........DON'T JUDGE
You know, you always here those deep voices of the world and you think "oh they just messed with that" or "no one can go that deep, its impossible" but theres something about seeing and watching it that makes you go "Hey! Thats the real thing! WOW!"
Love the Fairfield Four, been listening to them for years. Love the Gaithers for doing these "homecomings". The Gaithers have been singing and producing for decades. And everybody else you see in that clip is a gospel singer
Is it just me but is George not going nuts over the bass singer but over the tenor who keeps screaming those high notes? I've watched this video hundreds of times over the years, and I've always been confused by Bill's comments.

Fantastic performance! Rollbel, .....lighten up. Everyone is clearly having a goood time here!! Refering to someone as black or white .....is not equivalant to a racial slur. Does it look like anyone in this video is upset or offended?....just the opposite I would say!
no one loves music more than a bunch of musicians...
and if you've never been to a southern black church on a hot summer Sunday morning, you ain't never seen how much worshippin' can be crammed into one building in your life!
@actored1 I would say Issac is my favorite bc i like the style of the Fairfield 4's music, they are my favorite gospel group so of course i would say that. But if you are gonna say whos the best bass singer ever, im gonna have to go with JD Sumner
This is a group that everyone needs to hear in order to appreciate the quality of the black quartet. Thank GOD this is preserved forever! Thanks hoover4000 for loving God enough to share his gospel through the universal language of music.
There was a guy at my church that could sing bass like that. He was like 6'5 and real skinny, but when he talked to you, it was like your soul was vibrating. His voice was just so deep and strong it was almost unreal. He could drown out the rest of the choir by himself when he wanted too. He sang with a couple of down south groups but nothing as famous as The Fairfield Four. He died of cancer around 10 years ago, to this day he is still the best bass i have heard sing live
yea it was amazing. even today when ever i hear a bass singer i automatically think back to him in my mind in comparison. Isaac is as close as i have heard in a long time. Its a video of JD Sumner talking on here, his voice wasnt THAT deep when he spoke, but its something like that. is sounded like somebody had recorded somebody speaking and edited it to be bass heavy.
Bill Gaither doesn't realize that black gospel quintets are called quartets because there are four harmony parts plus the melody. We still love you, Bill. That bass singer is awesome, and so is the tenor. They're such a tight group.
Black Gospel is full of meaning and honor, George just really gets beside himself plus he use to sing this song also
