One couldn't think of a better cover for child abuse than an organized religion. The Catholic Church has covered up this for millennia, and other religions use their "holier than thou" approach to anyone who asked questions. Islam and Mormonism both have a history of marrying off young teenage girls to older men. The problem with the religious community is their hypocrisy. While on TV asking for donations, some of the pastors are having sex with prostitutes or engaging in pedophilia.
As an atheist, I object to polygamy not because its against mainstream christianity, but because its quite simply morally wrong to force underage girls into these marriages which I can guarantee that 90% of them don't want and are scared to death of. I remember being a 14 year old girl, and back them the thought of sex with an older man was just the most disgusting thing I could imagine. Most young girls feel that way. Its nothing but rape, it needs to be stopped.

If people are being abused, the abuser should be prosecuted just like in a monogamous relationship. Maybe we should ban monogamy also, since most abuse happens in monogamous relationships. Wrong actually. Not one person was in the YFZ Ranch was on welfare. It was one thing Texas investigated. Mormons believe this practice will continue in the heavens. Mormons also continue to practice in the temple. A man is allowed to be "sealed" or spiritually married to more than one woman. So that in heaven he will have his wives to choose from. Ok so this is called polygamy....

Here's what I think. Sounds like 13 year olds do get married, but they choose to do so. And this 'choice' equals brainwashing. These mothers are mistaken but not evil. They probably were abused if they didn't comply with their husbands wishes. Maybe some of these women do believe in this kind if life, and some are held by force. Some children may have been abused, but not all. You can't take some cases and assume about the rest.

I was just watching a program that told about the accounts of an escapee of the compound. She said that they have what they call a "blood atonement" in which if anyone within the compound was to go against the church or the leader, the only way they would be able to get into heaven was to shed their own blood.... to be killed. This makes you wonder what happened to that girl that made the call.

They can do what they want in terms of having a wife plus many girlfriends if anyone consents to it. I don't agree with it but it's their life. BUT of course it shouldn't be legal to legally marry more than 1 person. Plus child abuse, underage sex/marriage, murder, etc are all obviously wrong and illegal. Wrong actually. Not one person was in the YFZ Ranch was on welfare. It was one thing Texas investigated. However, because they invaded the YFZ Ranch and gathered them up, their cows ran out of milk and cheese, their gardens died, and they will NOW have to receive assistance until they put thigns back togther. My heart breaks every time I hear the woman with the handicapped children; the one that said that she sat in the stairwell for 3 weeks with her children and heard her daughter's backbone break. Why in h*ll are not these perpetrators sent to prison??? Some of these "leaders" seem to be operating with full power and authority to abuse, rape, and even murder, without any consequences whatsoever. Why do we let this go on?? People who have committed these types of crimes are in prison.

Can you guys imagine the uproar if some woman prophet said that women are to have three or more husbands and that the husbands were to keep sweet and all that other nonsense, look the other way, as the woman is heading from bedroom to bedroom? To Atimpson: Not even Stephen King could conjure up a horror story scary enough to match what goes on in FLDS households. I'm sure it's not easy seeing the cockroaches of the world being exposed to the light of day and having the truth come out; the truth of pedophilia and human trafficking. These compounds are prisons, not "homes." You can practice polygamy until the cows come home but you don't have the right to rape and sodomize children - period.

Let me give you some monogamy numbers :) It is estimated that in the US (monogamy) 2 out of 10 girls and 1 out of 10 boys are sexually molested by their 13th Birthday. They just raided 400 polygamist children in Texas and found 2 - 3 cases. Not 30 cases like you would find in Monogamy just by the average.

I received the copy of Banking on Heaven today that I ordered. I'm watching it through for the second time. I wish everyone could watch this documentary and understand what Warren Jeffs and his predecessors have done to the followers. This abuse of women and children must be stopped. FLDS=Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints

Ok I understand your confused so I'll help you out. First of all, Mormonism not only established the Law of Plural Marriage in the New Dispensation but it is the foundation of your relgion. Mormons believe this practice will continue in the heavens. Mormons also continue to practice in the temple. A man is allowed to be "sealed" or spiritually married to more than one woman. So that in heaven he will have his wives to choose from. Ok so this is called polygamy....

So spending half my life as a mormon is not sufficient time to know about mormons? Let me tell you what I KNOW for a fact. I've attended temple sealings where a man had already been previously sealed to another woman. Same temple governed by the same prophet in the same church. This is what mormons believe I attended all the same meetings you did, was taught all the same things you were, followed the same prophet you did (Hinkley,Smith,Young etc) so if I'm wrong what does that make you???

Ok Dianna- im gonna have to break it down for you- polygamy is being married to more than one woman. In the LDS church and man IS allowed to be sealed to more than one woman. He is "spiritually" married to more than one woman so when he gets to the celestial kingdom he will have his wives. That is polygamy. Again, only difference is FLDS practice it openly and phyisically and LDS practice it quietly and in the eternal life. Any questions???

A man cant be physically married to more than one woman but he can be "sealed" or "spiritually married" to more than one woman. THe FLDS do it physically and the LDS do it spiritually. The FLDS are no confused on the doctrine than the LDS-LOL!!. Maybe its the FLDS who have it right. Warren Jeffs is their prophet who communes with God & their God has commanded that they practice it on earth. So whos right & whos wrong. The same God that both believe in has commanded different things??

....and the Pearl of Great Price was written by JS it contained the Joseph SMith History, Articles of Faith, and a supposed compilation of the Book of Abraham, Book of Moses, portions of the Book of Matthew & Genesis etc. You're making no sense the Pearl of Great Prices is followed by the LDS- it is in your standard works, you read it in church every week. The only difference is the way they choose to live polygamy- one group practices here on earth the other in Heaven.

Here's what I think. Sounds like 13 year olds do get married, but they choose to do so. And this 'choice' equals brainwashing. These mothers are mistaken but not evil. They probably were abused if they didn't comply with their husbands wishes. Maybe some of these women do believe in this kind if life, and some are held by force. Some children may have been abused, but not all. You can't take some cases and assume about the rest.

One bad situation does not condemn all situations. Even if Flora and those other women had bad situations, that does not mean that all situations in a polygamous situations are terrible. To condemn all Germans due to the Holocaust in an incorrect principle, because all Germans are NOT responsible for the Holocaust. Condemning all Germans is the same as condemning all polygamous. It is a logic fallacy and an incorrect principle.

I was just watching a program that told about the accounts of an escapee of the compound. She said that they have what they call a "blood atonement" in which if anyone within the compound was to go against the church or the leader, the only way they would be able to get into heaven was to shed their own blood.... to be killed. This makes you wonder what happened to that girl that made the call.
