Phillip Zarrilli, a professor at the University of Exeter and one of the few Western authorities on kalari payat, estimates that the art dates back to at least the 12th century CE. The historian Elamkulam Kunjan Pillai attributes the birth of kalari payat to an extended period of warfare between the Cheras and the Cholas in the 11th century CE.
In Sangam, Kalari was not used as a martial act according to Dick Luijendijk, a researcher at the university of Nijmegen. "Kalari" is a centre of learning in Kerala. they taught language, math etc. later on, there were fight schools, thats what "payattu kalari" means.
its to bad you missed the point its about spirtual development..its conflicts with religion because of the narrow mindset..but on a esoteric or ystical level its the same.. your teachers have mislead you and blided you..
This martial art is good, but I doubt they can win a fight without their weapons, especially after seeing this on Fight Quest. The narrator is wrong about kalaripayattu being older than Christianity because Christianity is two thousand years old, which is many centuries older than kalaripayattu. Syrian Christians are the oldest Christian community in the world. I'm not able to learn this style because it conflicts with religion, but I respect all art forms.
@MikeVarghese86 you should watch "5000 year old indian martial arts"about a russian prof. who decoded ancient sanskrit text which elaborately describes all breaking and death movements (mother of all martial arts in the world) the nazi's also tried to decode it because they where looking for a secret weapon and knew that sanskrit texts have this knowledge(like they desribe atoms and all planets long before they where discovered in the west) so 5000 years is 2 and a half times older than christ.
@MikeVarghese86 : This martial art is derived from the ancient Shastra Vidya (Knowledge of Weapons). A properly trained Shastra Vidya practitioner can easily kill with bare hands. Ancient kings who were trained in this art used to fight wild animals like tigers and lions with only a spear or sword.
@amit1947 Um... Where did you get this information?? Have you heard of Varmakalai? It is a Dravidian martial art that is the mother of many martial arts. Kalari is a part of Varmakalai or what is left of varmakalai. Oh... it actually lives in another form better known to you as Kung-Fu... read up about Bodhi Dharma, who is actually a Pallava prince.
@MikeVarghese86 Thambi... read my reply to Amit. Christianity is JUST 2000 years old. Dravidian "race" is about 5000 years old. Just because Malayalam and Malayalis didn't exist as a distinct group before 700 years doesn't mean that's the start of Kalari. This is actually a Tamilian martial art passed onto Nairs when Kerala was Tamilnadu. What you see as Kalari today is but a part of a lost martial art. In all probability, tamilian martial art is the mother of all martial arts.
This Fantasic , I am a Karateka from Shorin Ryu and Shotokan Karate , I am amazed at this form/style. It has movements and elements in it that I have seen in Karate Do . but strangly its what I believe to be the one from which both Japanese and Chinese schools are decended from, there is uncanny simularity , but in the Japanese schools much was lost after WWII . in short I think this style gave rise to them all
@mikepharrison In a way,yes... Kalari descended from Varmam which went to Shaolin with Bodhi Dharma and became Kung-Fu when combined with existing chinese martial arts like wing chun, it forms the basis of QiGong, Muay Thai and influenced several others. That being said, there were several local martial art forms at that time, but when Buddhism spread, this tamilian martial art spread along with it owing to the legacy of Bodhi Dharma.
This art is fantastic

This is from south India, I knew guys in my village that thought and practiced it.
Unfortunately arts like this are fast disappearing as in india today if it doesnt make money no one is interested in learning it.
The British did a good job of making us lose pride and interest in our traditional arts and culture.
