Great film, underrated and underseen, and one of the late Ms. Taylor's best performances. The film was pretty daring material for 1958. Think of it: insanity, pedophilia, cannibalism, Oedipus Rex triumphant, madhouses, rampant narcissism, prefrontal lobotomies, all in one film. Great, wholesome, lighthearted fun for the whole family.
@ecoweho11 Agreed. This is classic beauty. Compare Taylor's face to someone like Angelina and you see the difference between the real thing and quirky, odd looks.
Suddenly last summer really is a tear jerker. When I first saw the movie I jad no idea that it would turn out the way it did. It was going one way and then all of a sudden, a TKO with brutal honesty. Talk about hurt. This is how the world is and the tragedies of peoples lives.
It is even more of a tear jerker, if you know that the author's sister Rose had to undergo a lobotomy. Their mother arranged the surgery against her brother's will. He loved his sister dearly. Tennesse Williams must have felt terrible. In the US many people who were just a little different had to undergo these cruel, completely unspecified surgeries and turned to mental zombies or physical cripples. This went on till the 70s! Most prominent victim is J.F. Kennedy's sister in 1941
Most people think Dame Elizabeth Taylor's best performance to be Who's afrais of Virginia Wolf. Well I just don't know, but here suffers, hurts, screams and makes you cry all the way through the film. In any case the best scream, "at the top of the hill", by anyone I've seen. Many times I saw this, it always makes me cry. Wonderful actress, gorgeous sexy lady. Amazing human being!
I think you might have a point about the role of "Martha" in Virginia Woolf being too hastily touted as "The Great Performance" of Taylor's career. Guess I'll have to watch this movie again. From my experience, sometimes it takes a second viewing. Thanks for the comment.
Two rare beauties! Elizabeth and Martha! Dame Elizabeth Taylor on screen teamed with Martha Davis (The Motels) with her hit song Suddenly Last Summer .
Good work for this cause. Thanks for the information!
oh what memories this jars in my head..."it was alway violet and sebastian, sebastian and violet"...what meaty roles all had to chew on...yes, for me she is the last movie star but in this film, she was an ACTRESS....FABULOUS POST!
Richard Rocks. Wow you are a true Elizabeth Taylor Fan. I Think you and Randy Taborelli are the most informed people on earth when it come To the wonderful Elizabeth Taylor. Thank you for your generosity and devotion to Our Elizabeth Taylor. Greetings from Chicago.
Mr. Bassett is a true ET fan. Mr. R? You've got to be kidding--he has no feeling for her at all, pro pr con. He wrote his book for $, which is fine. He's NOT a fan or expert. He's no Mr. Bassett.
Wow!!! This is really a cool video! I love the Motels since 1980s. They are top of my favorite because I watched many 1950s movies on TV with sound off and listening to greatest hit of the motels with great CD bass. It is always perfect matches to 1950s movies.
Great job!! I love Elizabeth Taylor, she's a beautiful woman.
This was positively DREAMY. I've always loved this song, and I love Elizabeth Taylor .. but OMG I've never seen this movie. I'm moving it to the top of my queue This Second!
I can only imagine a Christmas Day celebration.

that "help" scream is great performance. It shows Liz is not just a pretty face, but a real actress, who is not afraid to show "ugly" side too.
