@TheTroy87 Not so true, my R is not particularly quick of the line, though no slouch either, but 2nd and 3rd gear rock. 300 hp @5500 rpm and 300 torque @2000 rpm. When you shift into second you are dropped right to that max torque rpm and you have massive power to redline.
@GeSchmidtt I have the same problem with my 2004 R and I cant seem to find too many aftermarket upgrades to add performance besides exhaust systems. if you've done any upgrades to yours do you have any suggestions?
@paradox111490 I have not done anything to mine, and yes you are right the after market is pretty slender for the S60 besides body kits and exhaust. The only thing I am going to do to help with off the line starts is adjust my clutch, which engages way to high up and causes me to have uneven launches.

I have an S70 T-5 and some moron in a Cavalier tried to race me last night. I won. Thanks Volvo turbo's and Volvo safety for letting me walk away from an accident in 2003. That's my reason for Volvo4Life.
There are about 20 parts on the e39 m5 that fail or deteriorate regularly and seriously affect performance. Some of these issues can be very hard to diagnose or even notice. As a result, there are very few of these cars putting full power down these days. This m5 is obviously not one of them.

@MangoSmoothie16 That is not true. I went and test drove a 2010 Nissan Skyline GTR 35 last week and spoke to both the service department and the salesman and they both confirmed that uses launch control does not void the warranty-if you abuse it too much it will.

Tuned or not, one thing that BMW M5 doesn't have and will never have is Ride Comfort. The S60R may be tuned but it still rides like a Rolls Royce.
I'll buy an S60R over a BMW M5 E39 simply because a lot of people own BMWs. Call me a dick but at least I'm not a badge whore and want sporty? get a proper sports car. There are many cheap ones out there.
I never "got" Volvo until I drove one. Now I own one. Awesome cars. Nicer interior and faster than most of the overpriced Germans for half the price. Quiet, smooth, lots of power. Have your cake and eat it too.
i love both cars but stock for stock is no comparison. m5 is way more powerful...by 100hp. and also, it honestly looks like the m5 was not being pushed. you couldn't here it's screaming v8 engine being maxed out. i love both cars but m5 is still a way better performer.

@OlaEli even if you are right about the M5 there is no way on earth a 300hp car like S60R can smoke an M5. Given the conditions (its cold it seams) plus an over weight and clumsy M5 driver yes, but clame the S60R can top a M5.. come on be real. One good run does not make you a star!!!!
The S60R isn't running original stuff, the upgrade in Sweden gives it about 370hp, there's a russian video on youtube that dynotests a S60R before and after a ECU upgrade, and it's quite a difference. Then we're down to 370vs400hp and equal weight - an S60R weights about 1600-1700kg. And with AWD you dont lose grip like the M5 does in this movie.
I don't think I'd ever get a BWM simply for the fact that EVERYONE has one. If you're going to get a European luxury car, at least get something fewer people have like a Mercedes or a Volvo. BMW's are pretty decent cars, but you get more with a Volvo. Better built, safer, and with a little tuning, pretty fast.

@russian1120 no chance, there is no substitute for displacement, turbos are for pussys, s60r 0-60 is 5.5 seconds, e39 m5 is 4.8, this dude fried his clutch and seriously does not know how to drive one of the best cars ever made! You can't compare the S60R to the M5 because the M5 is just too fast for a stock S60R. M5 has 200 more hp than the S60R but it's also about twice as much money. That's like expecting an M5 to compete against a Mercielago.

For uneducated member such as volvorox (first one i saw) BMW is generally not a "line" car. Sure it has hp and w/e but it's not meant to do lines with. It also is naturally aspirated, I think i heard a turbo of some kind or something on the volvo. Just saying guys.
@nanzioboy yeah, the volvo s60r is turbocharged with a big intercooler from standard, and putting all the power and torque down is an awd system. So it is a lot easier to get more power out of than the m5, Bsr offer a chip that'll give it 350 horsepower, pretty much just on extra boost.

Well, I think you are dreaming because thats just what I experienced. I smoked on german autobahn last year in summer: 2004 Audi S4 Avant, 2007 350z, 2005 Golf R32, several other ricer boy golfs and audis, I even won agaianst an E46 M3 Cabrio.... Especially the Golfs, 350z and those ricer boys are no match at all.
the cool thing about the T5 and R engines is that you have a very wide RPM band. You dont have to switch gears in very short intervalls like in an EVO for example. You can take your time and shift way later... I can rev it to 7300 and when you consider from where the turbo sets in and that you can rev from 2000-3500 all the way to 7300 is awesome. Especially when you have a special custom software with a very specific boost mapping :-D...
E46 M3 Cabrio? Maybe, because it's heavier than the M3 Coupe. But certainly you can't smoke an M5. At least you're a mere dreamer. M5 will run you over, kid.

So being that my euro spec M6 has been tested by Road & Track and Motor Trend to do 60 in 4.1 and the 1/4 mile in 12.4 I don't see how on earth a Volvo will even be able to keep up with me unless it has been tuned like hell which is just embarrassing for the owner then. Even my old 360 CS is faster than today's top Volvo.

i got a S60 R, with a few modifications, remap, exahust system, filter, etc, you can really wake these cars up and good for 350 hp + and you notice the difference between stock and tuned also bags of torque.

it was a good race the bimmer spun alot off the line the s60r awd just launched it tho. mind u those s60r are pretty quick my brother used to have one i drove it often they are very quick solid cars. and when u start modding them they are crazy

There are about 20 parts on the e39 m5 that fail or deteriorate regularly and seriously affect performance. Some of these issues can be very hard to diagnose or even notice. As a result, there are very few of these cars putting full power down these days. This m5 is obviously not one of them.

Tuned or not, one thing that BMW M5 doesn't have and will never have is Ride Comfort. The S60R may be tuned but it still rides like a Rolls Royce.

The S60R isn't running original stuff, the upgrade in Sweden gives it about 370hp, there's a russian video on youtube that dynotests a S60R before and after a ECU upgrade, and it's quite a difference. Then we're down to 370vs400hp and equal weight - an S60R weights about 1600-1700kg. And with AWD you dont lose grip like the M5 does in this movie.

I don't think I'd ever get a BWM simply for the fact that EVERYONE has one. If you're going to get a European luxury car, at least get something fewer people have like a Mercedes or a Volvo. BMW's are pretty decent cars, but you get more with a Volvo. Better built, safer, and with a little tuning, pretty fast.

You can't compare the S60R to the M5 because the M5 is just too fast for a stock S60R. M5 has 200 more hp than the S60R but it's also about twice as much money. That's like expecting an M5 to compete against a Mercielago.

@nanzioboy yeah, the volvo s60r is turbocharged with a big intercooler from standard, and putting all the power and torque down is an awd system. So it is a lot easier to get more power out of than the m5, Bsr offer a chip that'll give it 350 horsepower, pretty much just on extra boost.

the cool thing about the T5 and R engines is that you have a very wide RPM band. You dont have to switch gears in very short intervalls like in an EVO for example. You can take your time and shift way later... I can rev it to 7300 and when you consider from where the turbo sets in and that you can rev from 2000-3500 all the way to 7300 is awesome. Especially when you have a special custom software with a very specific boost mapping :-D...

The point is your car was garbage when it was stock, then you modified it and STILL it can keep up with an M3 in a straight. Your ignorance is annoying. The S60 R does 100 Km/h in 6.3 that is pathetic so the fact that it needs to be tuned is proof enough to the fact that it is SHIT.

Name 1 Volvo with any noteworthy performance in stock form... Heck, they are good cars, built like a rock, sturdy and safe as can be, but comparing them to BMW? Volvo could never be compared to BMW unless you are talking about safety where Volvo clearly excels. By the way, VANOS is just BMW's proprietary name for VVT and if you think they fail in BMW's then explain why an engine such as the S85B50 (w/ double VANOS) kept winning International Engine of the Year Awards year after year after year.

So basically what you are saying is that on sweden's shitty roads the Volvo is better. Maybe so, but everywhere else in the world they are nothing but safe old people's cars. That's a plain and simple reality. I live in South Beach, Miami, Florida. Down here you won't see anyone driving a volvo unless they are above 55 or handicapped.

Humiliate guys in Porsches or BMW M cars? Um... I'm sorry but I don't see any car in the current Volvo line up which will hit the 1/4 mile in under 13 seconds or 60 in under 5. So being that my euro spec M6 has been tested by Road & Track and Motor Trend to do 60 in 4.1 and the 1/4 mile in 12.4 I don't see how on earth a Volvo will even be able to keep up with me unless it has been tuned like hell which is just embarrassing for the owner then. Even my old 360 CS is faster than today's top Volvo.

I like em both. Given the choice between either one I would probably take the M5 just because I like the RWD but they are still both really nice.

Guys thats not the point. Listen, a volvo s60r and a m5 are in totally diffrent automible classes. a volvo shuld be racing like 330ci and m3. but m5, and beatn it. or even coming close to it, thats still amazing, a whole class or even 2 maybe. I luv m5's no doubt, but come on, Sweidsh power.
My dad owns an s80, and it really just cant compare to a m5 IN MY OPINION.

i got a S60 R, with a few modifications, remap, exahust system, filter, etc, you can really wake these cars up and good for 350 hp + and you notice the difference between stock and tuned also bags of torque.

yes it is, but what im saying is your watching a 300hp car vs a m5 thats pumping at least 130+ more horses, and in a total diffrent car class. the s60r class is mr, and the 325,330,ext. Meaning you have a lower car class smoking a higher one. You dont see that around too much do you,?
