So what is the reason for being able to go through walls with the backwards long jump? Is it because for that instant, mario's velocity is so high, that the program does not detect the collision of mario and a wall within 1 computing frame?  Which may result in mario ending up in the nearest valid location?

@KisekiTim Not so much a valid location, but think of it as clipping through an object that usually will stop you. When you run into a wall, your velocity isn't high enough for it you to pass through since collision is detected at each step, or frame.

Because SM64 doesn't use an advance collision detection system but rather a simple one, you can clip through if your velocity is greater than how big the barrier is, especially those thin doors and wall joints.

Wow thats great. But I'm asking myself whether it would save time to prevent collecting coins. You would save some frames when coming out of the level because it wouldnt count so high.

first bowser level, the first two coins - they aren't necessary, are they?

The same thing with the single coin in second level. Seems to me as if you could evade this coin without any loss of time.

Or did you try it, having an eye on the coin counter while comparing the fastest ways? ;)
