  • Alex Zanardi today won the 2011 New York Marathon handcycle race

  • He cameback racing. how tough he is!

  • this is nightmare.......

  • at time 0:46 you can see the legs of zanardi exploding... It s horrible......aie

  • At 0:21 you can see him moving his leg.

  • get the whole thing in english and no voice overs

  • Geez! That has to be the worst non-fatal wreck I've ever seen!

  • SAD DAY AND A SAD WEEK

  • This is horrifying. Its up there with Pryce's accident in south africa

  • Not at all. Noone died here.

  • amazing how he didn't get killed there

  • Yeh, but he lost both legs. VERY SAD

  • How they saved his live i don't know.

  • @JontieDesario Good account of the details here on sportsillustrated dot cnn dot com. He didn't get to Berlin hospital until nearly an hour after the accident. The left leg blood loss was staunched with his race suit and compression bandages. The right leg was blown off above the knee and there was nothing left to bandage, so they used the belt of one of the rescue crew as a tourniquet, but it kept slipping off, so they had to hold it on.

  • This was without much shadow of a doubt one of the most violent crashes in Cart's history. Luckiely Zanardi survived and is now racing again.

  • At :23, you can see him moving one of his leg stumps. The pant-leg is still on it. Unbelievable.

  • @ 0:45 you can see pieces of his legs flying in the air

  • Indeed. The incident was so gory when you look closely at it that it is illegal to broadcast most of the still images on many US TV channels.

  • Unbelievable work by the medical crew, they had 3 minutes to get there and save him, and they did.

  • he is a absolutly good driver....and that he drives wtcc after a crash like that is unbeliveable..... he has much energy...

    respect!

  • Comment removed

  • He is my hearo!

  • absoulute legend, he's doing great in WTCC

  • like that song of Metallica - "ONE"

  • goddamn it split the car in two!!!

  • You're a moron..

  • And he is on pole for the first race of the WTCC in Brno.

    Unbelievable, what a legend :)

  • wtf horrible !!

  • OMG - you can see him moving the stumps of his legs after they have been sheared off - horrible!

  • How heartening it is to see him as happy as ever now still driving in Touring Cars, what a legend.

  • Oh my god!

  • Whats amazing is that this guy came back to racing after this crash! Zanardi may have lost his legs but he has plenty of balls!

  • doctors made a better-than-perfect work, I remember maybe dr. Trammell said he lost as much a 5 liters of blood, and they managed to save his life.

  • true!

I heard he lost all but 1 liter of his own blood. The docters truly are miracle workers! If they weren't there he would not have survived!

  • Such a sad thing to see.

I'm glad he has adapted to living without his legs very well. He's even racing and still kicking ass! I too miss one of my legs (since birth) and he's giving me the courage and confidence to do my own things and not letting myself being influenced by what other people thing of me!

    Cheers Alex!

  • nobodys perfect :D . it is just " curveball in life"

  • fucking disrespectful mofo - he was a great driver in F1 and champcar - did you not see how he spun? how could he have possibly moved that car when it was still moving? I hope you lose your legs in the same situation - then we'd see how you feel, wouldnt we?

  • Great personality and a great driver!

Cheers for the docters who were present at the crashsite, they definately saved poor Alex's life!!!

  • 九死に一生。

    だが両足切断になるとは。。。

  • great man good driver i wish he stayed in formula one

  • FORZA ALEX!! True champion!!

  • OMG that's insane...poor dude

  • great man inside and outside

  • Alex Zanardi is a true inspiration

  • you actually make me sick. You spout off completely disrespectable rubbish and then you have the nerve to ask people to respect your opinion.Fuck off

  • You don't deserve respect you sick Asshole. How would you feel if you lost your legs?

  • You utter wanker.

  • it was not his error asshole,he was not in the pit road and we will not respect a fucking retard

  • be respectful? OK! Go fuck yourself you insane little bastard.

  • That really is a terrible thing to say. If it happened to you, how would you like it?

  • Your brain made a big error letting you make this comment, I don't you deserve to loose it though.

  • He got to the hospital with only 1 liter of blood left, that's awesome!

  • ALEX 6 UN GRANDE..

  • This year alex zanardi will participate the new york marathon with a special bike. He's a great guy.

  • Great video. I'd never watched that accident so clear!

  • funny cnt arent you!

  • They got ripped off in the impact; In one of the films you can see the blood pouring out onto the track. Quick thinking by one of the Medical crew members saved him.

  • at 0.45 you can actually see bits off his legs in the air

    very sickening

    walk on zanardi

  • Zanardi is the first guy I saw doing donuts after winning a race. I remember the commentators saying that the engineers weren't going to like that. The next thing you know everybody's doing donuts after winning. But I think none can be as heartfelt and genuine as Zanardi.

  • that might feel weird cause streering wheel and everythig fly away.. is he unconscious after hit because he moved one of his feet`?

  • This crash is disgusting.

  • Took a major hit, lost both of his legs, nearly bled to death...

And after recovery, back to driving racecars again.

(and won a couple of races too if i'm correct)

This guy is an example of determination and show huge willpower.

He was my favorite in the IndyCar series, and this only extends my respect for him.

Hope he will drive a modified F1 car someday, just to show he can.

  • He actually went back to that racetrack for a "parade lap" in a CART car and ran a couple all out and ran something in the area of 215mph! Truely one of the good guys in racing.

  • Zanardi is currently racing in Touring Cars since 2004 - first in the European Touring Car Championship, and for the last few years the World Touring Cra Championship. He also tested a specially modified Sauber-BMW F1 car in 2006

  • He did it last year, driving a modified formula 1 BMW Sauber car. A hero !!!

  • zanardi

    1 of my heros

  • He would've definitely died had it not been for the quick response time. Those pics are very chilling.

  • yeh the impact took both his legs of in the crash

  • is that part of his leg in 45 secs

  • I'm wondering the same thing, but I think it actually is...

  • im brazilian, and im think this:UNITED STATES MOTORSPORTS SUCKS

  • thanks for your input...you do know that this happened in Germany right?

  • Love you alex!!!

  • Uh...no, it is pretty clear that his legs were ripped off, you can see blood and stuff, just chilling! Makes you think the tremendous risk these drivers take when getting in these speed machines, it's just absolute nerves of steel!

  • i don't think he lost them in the accident. i think it was the sergury afterward. worst crash i've ever seen. xxx

  • non è forte chi non cade mai , è forte chi cade e si rialza..zanardi è un mito

  • the thing that most impresses me is the way he moves his "legs" on 0:24... absolutely freezing

  • zanardi lost both of his legs in this accident

  • where are the legs? i

  • Agustin, like I said, You're a chump.

  • go to the fuck boyd.

  • grande alex zanardi.poteva sembrare la fine di un mito e invece si è ripreso alla grande e continua a vincere

  • Who was the weiner that flagged this as adult material? What a douche.

  • Well actually you can see parts of his legs flying on the photos ...

(it might be doubtful on low res photos like those, but I've seen them in high res, and there's not a shadow of a doubt that it could be anything else than his legs)

  • OH SNAP! Pause it at 0:44 you can clearly see the meat of his legs flying away. It clear as day! that is NOT part of the car!

  • apperantly zanardi lost all but a litre or 2 of blood what a guy and those marshalls did brilliant to save life.

  • stor olyckshändelse. Zanardi gud.fucking amerikansks

  • stor olyckshändelse. Zanardi gud

  • He's a lucky man,he had two semi fatal accident and he survived .Spa 93, and German 500 2001. ZANARDI GOD

  • i'm swedish ¿have you got any problem? UNITED STATES MOTORSPORTS SUCKS

  • no problem here, you're the one with a problem. you are a jerk.

  • Agustin, that meant you, chump

  • UNITED STADES MOTORSPORT´S SUCKS

  • nice spelling cock sucker

  • This happened in Germany, Einstein.

  • yeh but its an american series

  • great driver

  • Yes he did, but he still drives today and is a legend of motor racing.

  • zanardi is the best driver ever seen!

  • He is an amazing driver. Its amazing as much as it is sickening, but the picture at 44 sec, you can see the flesh from his legs flying though the air. His recovery has been truly stunning.

  • This was the worst crash I have ever seen in my life. It is a miracle that Zanardi survived.

  • A Life Example, Outstanding Driver, Champion, and Person! Never give up!!!

  • O MY GOD his legs moved ooooooo my godens

  • Paul Dana?

  • So gruesome...

  • He is a real hero, Great raceman! Never give up!

  • His legs may have moved reflexively, but he wasn't conscious. He only found out that he'd lost his legs after waking up from his coma.

  • I had never seen the view from the track camera before. You can see him try to move his legs to try and get up and out of what was left of the car, only to find that he has no legs left.

  • According to him, he do not remember anything and he was in a kind of unconsciousness (and also induced coma) for some days after the accident, so that had to be an inconscious movement. It was not a miracle, but a perfect work of the doctors to save him. Some seconds of delay in the oeration to stop his bleedeing and the end would came.
