Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project basically stole this idea outright...I can't see any acknowledgement of this this theft in the credits of either movie. God, if Harlan Ellison can force Jim Cameron to admit he stole Terminator off him, even though the ideas Ellison used in his Outer Limits episodes weren't original even in the early 60s, you'd think Volk coulda sued those guys' arses halfway to Pluto....
ghostwatch was awesome....i was a little disappointed when i found out it wasn't real, but at the time i was 13 and it did the job of scaring the shit out of me. i hope there is a 20th anniversary documentary next year because it seems to have been forgotten about probably because of the controversy it caused. but that it what made it so great and i doubt we'll ever see anything like this again on british television
I was 8 when Ghost watch came on TV and I honestly havnt felt more fear ever since. Even getting mugged and crashing my motorbike was better than the night I watched it. I remember actually sending myself to bed because I couldnt cope. Im 27 and it till affects me
Ghostwatch was a really good peice of British Horror/Drama that proved it could still kill Hollywood in terms of making a good scary movie. It drew you in and scared the shit out of you and it had never been done like this before not at this level. It was the paving stone for future scray storys like Paranormal activity.I think It was based on the Enfeild Poltegeist in 1977.
Is it 2012 that you guys are hoping to have a Ghostwatch Behind The Curtains documentary on tv for the 20th anniversary of the show?
If so, I REEEEEEAAALLLLLY hope you get it aired. I personally loved the drama, and even though I was 8 years old at the time it first aired on Halloween 1992, it is truly the best paranormal programme I have ever seen and think I ever will.
Lets say this programme was intended to be nationwide spoof. Will it work again or at least to the extent that it did in 1992? Even if they used all the tricks in the business, even if it was done with impeccable acting and professionalism, the answer is no! Such spoof also relies on the public's belief in supernatural as well as television. Since the advent of the internet, reality tv, widespread popular media and networking, belief in either is not nearly what it used to be.
Sara greene was the nations sweetheart at the time , butter wouldnt melt ! Parky ,probably one of the most feasible people of all time and mike smith , far too straight for anyone not to take seriously ! All very trust worthy , I think thats what made it so effective.
This was the most terrifying thing I ever watched when I was 11. I was petrified for years thinking there was something in the corner of my bedroom :)
We had to watch this in a Media Studies class on imitations of the documentary form...I know this was from like 1992 and all, but seriously, how could anyone apart from kids believe this was real?
this scared the shite out of me when i watched this back in the day. i still remember my friend lending it to me on tape & i was so scared that i didnt even want to hold the tape in my hand incase Mr pipes got out.lol
Somebody has to upload the whole thing of 100 Greatest Scary Moments cos its just not fair having to wait for ages cos its on e4 once or twice a year and its not avalible on any torrent sites so somebody has to upload it cos its 1 of my favourite documentarys ever and i like scary stuff and horror movies
Sorry about all this its just that i really would like to watch the whole thing anyday i want
apart from it being a fake and tricking people, you cant take away from th fact it was an extremely clever and scarey programme, frightened my when i was 10 anyway
i have never seen or heard about this till now. and i got to say i can totally tell its a MOCKumentery i mean the actors are so unbelievable posing as real people. maybe because i am a actor myself its "actors instinct" that i see that or can tell?.
did you mean posing as the family? cos the woman presenting in the house was a real-life presenter hired for the show so that people could feel as though they know the people in the house, to make them seem realistic.
Prince: I got Ghostwatch on DVD lol its pretty damned funny and i love the lil scenes of the ghost in the background in alot of scenes. Defo worth picking up.
Though it wasn't wise for me to watch it in the dark with the living room curtains closed, i was terrified to look at them!
The whole "what big eyes you have" scene scares me beyond beleif! and this is coming from a 16 year old who knew the whole thing was fake! imagine how people watching it for the first time AND with the belief it was real must have felt!
This was waaaaay ahead of it's time! still a brilliant peice of film!
I watched it when it was live - or so i thought - in 1992 when I was 8. Believe me, watching it when it was apparently all happening for real was mega, MEGA scary! Even my father was looking twice in the dark corners of the room. I slept with my light on for a few days after this aired.
The character of Pipes was really that of a mentally-disturbed man called Richard Turnstall. He claimed that he was possessed by "Mother Siddons (?)".
@january301973 it was Raymond Tunstall 2b exact but i ddnt hear anythin bout him bein posessed by mother seddons but apparently she did live in or round the house but the story wud make sense if he was cos he reckoned he had a woman trapped in his body which led me 2 believe he was just a tranny not posessed by a woman but that might b y he went nuts and killd himself cos he was haunted by the child killin baby farmer mother seddons who did exist BTW frm the victorian era, she hung 4 it aswell.
its strange because. when i first watched this i thart its fake. but even though i knew that. i was still scared of it. i watched this when i was 9 or 10
@doodleschucky yes in fact b4 they showed u him or teased u with sly glimpses of him throughout the girl described him just as if she was describing pinhead from hellraiser onkly without the nails in his head, it was the first thing I thought of and because I was 11 and though it was real I thought she must have been watching too many horror films and made it all up ha ha how ironic I thought she was lying in a real documentary that was a spoof anyway how starnge!
a paratrooper shit himself when he watched ghostwatch and his wife sent in a letter to the b.b.c. asking for a refund for his shitstained trousers lol priceless.
i remember it i was 13 and we had a halloween sleepover at my place and we were that scared there was 8 of us trying to squeeze in the 1 bed.Didnt a guy kill himself after this because he was haunted by it and thought it was real?
Yeah, he was 18 but had a younger mental age and began to think a problem with the heating in his house was cold sensations from ghosts. He became so obsessed with the idea that he killed himself.
He killed himself cos he thought he had a woman trapped inside him and he was an early released psychiatric patient who molested kids. Even if ur a nutta u wud knw 2call a plumber no need 2top urself over bad central heatin also I heard he thought he was posessed by mother seddons the child killin baby farmer frm the victorian era who lived there b4 so hes prob a mad tranny who hated the cold n killed himself, best thing 4him really with a life like that LMAO Thank fuck it was a spoof eh?!
@DontGoQuietly jus read some more comments after watchin ghostwatch, I didnt realise that som1 had killed themselves after watchin that? I never heard of that at the time or is it a rumour? I though u were chatting about pipes the ghost cos he killed himself by hangin 2 in the glory hole and the cats had eaten his face off cos he was in there 4 days and the cats were hungry. How confusin! But surely the BBC wud never get away wiv that, they would av some responsibilty 4 it if that was the case
Well I was a bit too young to watch this when it first came out but yes, the young man's name was Martin Denham and he did indeed kill himself. He had a younger mental age than his actual age so probably didn't understand how to differentiate between things being real or fake, especially since the show managed to convince loads of people otherwise! If you look on Wikipedia, it tells you more about it.
fuck me i love ghostwatch, i watched it when iwas15yrs in 1992, i remember thehype as they were gonna investigate a real ghost i was so scared about the yong girl being possessed i wet myself, and again when i was asleep had a nightmare, not even that shyte most haunted can scare me now, shame they wont ban that, bring back ghostwatch, we all miss it,
