This clip will forever hold a special place in my heart. Everytime I have seen it out front and back stage with Rascal it was so comforting and great. Rascal the dog that played Old Dog Tray is gone as of 2011. He was a great animal. Very sweet and belonged to my brother Jim Amburgey. These memories are very dear to me. When we would house set we had the pleasure of taking Rascal to the show. He was ALWAYS ready to go to the show. may god bless him and the show........
I've seen it about 10 times, from the early 70s as a child up until a couple years ago when I returned with my wife and children. It's funny, I had not seen it in probably 20 years at that time (the majority of my times being as a kid) and I immediately could recall, that many years later, that they had changed the script, and indeed, they had as I read later. Also, when I saw it in the 70s it had more "blackface" racial (but not racist) overtones...all PC'd up now.
this is now going longer than any other outdoor drama in North america that we know of. FYI her name was not Jeannie rowan. Foster was related to the rowans who owed Federal hill now known as My Old Kentucky Home. Her name was Jeannie Mcdowell. After collins death she remarried . they had one child a daughter. Marion Fosgter married and had a family Her married name was Welsh and she had a son Matthew and a daughter. Love Bardstown
I miss working there. I performed in the 2004 shows. The company obviously had complaints about the blackface and non-PC terms, so they altered the show to appeal to a more general audience. The story isn't really an accurate account of Stephen Foster's life, especially regarding Jeannie Rowan and her opinion of his music, but it really is a magical show nonetheless. It was my first professional acting gig and I really enjoyed it. Thanks for the post!
This show is so beautful live. We used to go see it every summer, unfortunatley they no longer perform it because they just weren't getting enough people to see it. It is in a small town that isn't much of a vacation spot...Bardstown is also beautiful, I'd recommend going there anyway
Actually, this is one of the few ''Choral'' Musicals I know of. The choral singing was, when I knew the show, really really great. I love hearing the night sounds in the backgroud, the typical sounds of summer in Kentucky. A really beautiful thing. First Class!
I have seen the Stephen Foster Story many times and each time it brings tears to my eyes when they sing My Old Ky Home. Bardstown is truely a magical place to me and my family. I hope to see it again next year. My daughter loves this muscial
I love this musical tribute to Stephen Foster. We've been many times over the years and fondly remember the original Trey who is buried out front. My only complaint is over time the writers have watered down the story to be more "politically correct". Try as we might, we cannot and should not change history
The musical is still very professionally done, but you are correct, changing historical fact is not right. Christie's Minstrels aren't even in blackface anymore.
Like you, I liked the version and the actors of 30 years ago better, but it is still a show I highly reccomend. Beautiful setting, costumes and music.
I loved the musical "The Stephen Foster Story"
Stephen Foster the Musical is good also...

1:41 "the time is never dreary, if a "fella" never groans" ???
That's NOT what Stephen Foster Wrote.
I saw this musical 30 years ago and they sung the correct words then. What a historical travesty in todays PC version..
