It gives us two Robotniks who bode off each other quite well, a great plan from them, a great throwback to another Sonic game (something that rarely happens...), and great lines! One thing i loved about the original Sonic was that he was a silent character. I just like him better that way for some reason, it makes him funnier. Well we see Tails talking about something serious, hes just like "(nods)". They even got Sonic's classic run right where his arms are always in the same exact pose well hes running. This is definitely my favorite 3D Sonic game.

Here's what I love: the Japanese version doesn't do the Robotnik joke because he has always been Eggman. In other words, the English version writers threw that in as a nod.

That's just awesome... the only way they could have done better is if they had one of the two Eggmen say "SnooPING AS usual, I see!"

Why did they change it? I'd guess because "Eggman" sounds silly and "Robotnik" sounds more apt. The acceptance of "Robotnik" by SEGA Japan is probably because the series is way more popular in the USA than in Japan and they wanted to legitimize the old name with fans while moving to his "official" name.

It was Naka, but 2004, not 2008. I read the "last accessed" date by mistake.

Now, I admitted I'm not perfect in the language, but I'm high intermediate and can read kana perfectly (just not kanji). I found some scans of both the Japanese and English original manuals: In the Japanese, it clearly calls him ドクター　エッグマン (Dokutaa Egguman), whereas the English was Robotnik. Since Sonic Adventure, Eggman has been the name everywhere.

In the Adventure series, they more or less synced up the two different names, giving Eggman preference, but it was a retcon. Before that game, he was always Robotnik in the US, and always Eggman in Japan. That's why the joke is only in the English dialogue; it wouldn't make sense to do it joke in Japanese.
