It's like the Jeromy Kyle Show but singing/screaming :P And with a rock theme, I grew up watching this film, Ted Neeley can reach notes I haven't heard people like Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) or Geddy Lee (Rush) reach :o

Anyone else see the use of the sheep as Judas runs off at roughly 6:08 ? and then the camera zooms in on Jesus. It's like he not only realises Judas is the one to betray him, but it is the start of him losing his 'flock' of followers, barring the rest of the apostles back at the tree. I've seen this hundreds of times but only just clicked to all that.
2:21 Judas seems to be thinking "You didn't just say that... Now you'll be with me until I die." You can see he really didn't want to turn Jesus in, but because many more would have died unless Judas turned his best friend and ally in, he really felt that he had no choice.
@ShadowPoet174 - Yes, and it's also a subtle nod to the Gospels, which say that Judas ate before the others and was a tip-off that he had turned in Jesus.
@Komnenit - actually, in SW Germany, I had a wine called Trollinger of exactly the same color and consistency. I've been trying to find it in the USA ever since.
@Islandscene09 If so, it happens off camera and VERY subtly. But if that was a directorial touch, I'm very impressed that a) you caught it; and b) Jewison employed it. I've seen the JCS movie probably 30+ times and never caught that.
The production of JCS I'm in opens tomorrow afternoon- in a church sanctuary, no less! :D Our Judas sounds like a hybrid of Carl Anderson and Joe Cocker. Our Jesus sounds like a combination of Ted Kneely, Carl Anderson and David Cook (from American Idol). Our chorus/ensemble is AMAZING! Super excited!
I'm not sure why, but even in this dramatic of a scene, I still at least smile at the face Carl Anderson makes at 2:22... It's kinda an "Oh.... I just ate your body...?"
I think the "jaded mandarin" plays in with Judas' very first song "heaven on their minds" where he is saying Jesus has basically become more about himself than the message/ideology they set out to be about. Thus, drawing the eye of Rome and the extinction of their people.
Also, my take on the sheep when Judas ran off was to symbolize turmoil in Jesus' "flock" - some of which then later demand (as actual people this time lol) his crucifixion from Pilate.
@trrrewr It kinda worked out that way yeah but the truth? Those sheep weren't supposed to be there let alone start running. He had to keep running with them or he would have been trampled. But it worked so well they kept it in :P kinda funny how that happens yeah?
this is the best song in this play i think, because the voices of carl anderson and ted neeley are amazing, and they hae a very good synchronisation together.
why does he sing like a jaded mandarin if someone knows?
I can't decide whether I think the sheep thundering after Judas are really dramatic or just a hilariously annoying ending to an otherwise amazing scene.
@julielaughs14 I think it is genius imagery. The loss of Judas has the consequences of taking some sheep astray along with. The sheep represent followers of Jesus (who is the shepherd). So, with Judas leaving like this, as zealous and influential as he is, some sheep go away along with him. AMAZING! GENIUS!
Ah, the big face-off at 3:29 . Those men were both so musically strong and their voices played off each other so well. It makes me miss Carl Anderson dearly.
Thanks for all these uploads.

1:13 The stop motion for a few second, as you know the picture by Leonard Da Vinci "The Last Supper". I love the scene.
And I love the first song of this scene, I feel the best song in this movie :)

@psonnega by "jaded mandarin" judas means a worn out wise man. In ancient near eastern culture there used to be officials called mandarins.

I love this entire musical, I always have.
But I always thought the lyric "always hoped that I'd be an apostle" was sort of funny. I never really thought of being an apostle as a career goal.

Anderson and Neeley are having this freestyle battle near the end of this scene. Kind of like dueling banjos, but with Neeley winning.
Best vocal collaboration in the whole movie. Whole lotta funk, soul and emotion going on here. Awesome.
