Naive, but well meaning. Voting for candidate every few years is pointless :( I may, of course, be misunderstandung this great mans interpretation on democracy
Danzr Von Thai I proclaim heartily that Leonard Cohen is the closest visage of itinerant troubadourism that we have been gifted with which puts John Lennon, Tracy Chapman, Cat Stevens, Jennifer Newberry, etc. down the list with Bob Dylan sucking like a barnacle on the hind teat. --{RIP Jack Powers}
This song should be considered a warning about what was happening around the time he was born (1934), "democracy" took over the republic our founders fought for! Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner, but in a republic the sheep has a gun and can contest the vote.
Seeing that dylan talked about true freedom, not democray! Democracy is the worst form of government! True democracy is 45 whites hanging one black. Democracy= the people rule. Not all people think the same! How about a government that loves everyone and a government that will take the 6 bilion dollars they spend on war each year or day and feed the hungry and give everyone else a chance to live a life to wich they want.
On most of these Leonard Cohen videos there's lots of people assuming he's american and then there's just as much people yelling at them saying he's canadian.
I really believe that he saw that Obama was going to win. Hence our President's Noble Peace Prize, He got more folks to get involved than any other Candidate could of dreamed on. Lenny is American after all. This was done live in 2009. I also believe he was thinking of the days in the 60s that led us finally to get involved again.
Not only is Cohen Canadian, but the song is on an album that came out in 1992. Find the lyrics online and study them. He's almost always sardonic, but he's also serious. In this case about democracy, I think. Which is still on the way rather than actually in existence.
First, your right he was born in Canada but spent his younger days in NYC. I agree with your take on his music as I have listened to it for 40 plus years. It is just like Dylan's lyrics ....timeless. I was speaking about how I felt he was directing this song with the USA's election / Obama. Thank you for your input.
The USA is a constitutional republic. That only the introduction of true democracy can kill. Like George Bush said." the constitution is only a Goddam piece of paper" . First they"ll take Manhatten then the world.
I can only guess that the american's don't complain about this song because they a) the don't realize it states their country is not a democracy, and/or b) the ones who are smart enough to figure that out are smart enough to know it is true.
@trexpaddock The USA was never a democracy, and I sincerely hope that it never will be. Ben Franklin, when asked what kind of government the Continental Congress had created, famously replied, " A republic, Ma'am, if you can keep it."
That democracy "is coming" (as opposed to already there) may imply the song says USA is not a democracy... but I don't think that's what he means.
I think the phrase "The cradle of the best and the worst" sums it up nicely. I take the whole song as a summation of both what makes USA great and what makes it deeply flawed. But, is it democratic? Without a doubt.
The Bilderberg group rule this planet and these people ain't pushing democracy its the jack boot in your face look at your FIMA camps you must live in Disneyland my friend.but you are about to wake up just in time for them to shoot you.
Luckily I have said freedoms (amongst many others). And while I know not what you are trying to say with history having not been so kind, I ask you, have you not those freedoms in the USA? And I furthermore urge you to compare and contrast the USA democracy in practice against every single country in our 'lil world. Not that you actually have to do that to see the USA has a healthy democratic level.

"They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom For trying to change the system from within I'm coming now, I'm coming to reward them First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin" It's coming from the feel that this ain't exactly real, or it's real, but it ain't exactly there. From the wars against disorder, from the sirens night and day, from the fires of the homeless, from the ashes of the gay: Democracy is coming to the Spain ??????
this is the first time ive ever listened to leonard cohen and all i can say is im blown away by his brilliance,im kickin myself for not going to see him live!!!!!!!

Leonard played in my area (Wellington, NZ) but tickets sold out as soon as they went on sale.
I missed out, which was a major disappointment.
Everyone I know whom went said it was the best show they had ever seen.
