Peter, you have a right to your opinion but your reason for disliking Hugo doesn't make sense. Because it doesn't follow the structure that movies are "supposed" to have, it's bad. I think it's called being different. Just because a movie strays away from the typical pattern doesn't make it bad. If you don't like it that's fine but it appears that your only problem with the film was the structure which is a stupid reason to hate a movie.

@RexTauri totaly agree, on a 1-10 scale, 5 should be AVERAGE, below that is below average, above that is above average. the whole "Mediocre to excellent ranges from 7-10" comes from magazines and big websites not wanting to lose sponsors, and kissing up to them. That this kind of thinking polutes non-sponsored webshows is sad but a reality. Take "AngryJoeShow" for videogame reviews, he does a 1-10 system right. The way Peter does it. 1-5 would suffice, he practicaly never goes below six.

Both Hugo and The Descendants deserve an 8/10, and that's being generous. Why Peter would give Descendants a 9 is beyond me. If structure was so important, Kubrick's films would never be considered masterpieces. Peter knows nothing about film or finding news on film. One of his stories is just an Alvin & The Chipmunks trailer with Mission Impossible dubbed over it.

I think Hugo is a very niche movie and close to an art house film. Since Hugo doesn’t have a particular goal, you really have to like the subject matter to enjoy the movie. I’m a huge silent film fan, so I loved how Hugo is basically a love letter to silent film. But I understand why someone might dislike Hugo.

You always explain storytelling and other basic film elements. The problem is that you always use the standard, common definitions. Sure that makes it easy to understand, but there's more to it than that. What's wrong with having originality in a movie? Does it have to follow the 3 act structure? Does it HAVE to? It's incredibly boring when you can watch a movie and it looks like it was written using Screenplay for Dummies.
