The company sais you have to work a shift from 5am till 10pm for 7 days straight and they will sack you if you dont show up.

So you show up after having 4 hours sleep for the last 5 days and fall asleep and they sack you.

Some airlines are being investigated by regulatory agencies for making pilots work such long hours that it's actually illegal. Usually the low cost carriers. ie, if they have 1 pilot work 16 hours, that means they don't have to hire 2 pilots working 8 hour shifts.

Pilots don't sleep because they want to, they sleep because airlines keep them overworked and underpaid, working shifts so long that they do not have time to sleep, add jet lag to that and it makes it even harder. You should try researching before you speak some time.

@jaheenan77 I agree. Every situation is different and things aren't always as simple as they seem. Sometimes it's hard to find other alternatives. What were they supposed to do? Everyone needs sleep. I've witnessed this in the military too, how people in the military are on call 24/7, and they fall asleep at the weirdest times. Long hours plus stress which keep the adrenals really active=falling asleep.

Longest flights are around 20 hours, if a doctor can operate at the end of a 24 hour shift i don't think flying a plane for the same amount of time is too much to ask. Especially when you're getting the insane salary commercial pilots get.

@mynameismatt2010 Regarding them being underpaid, study any source of information on the pay for new pilots (it takes around 5 years to make an actual liveable wage) I could quite probably make more than them at safeway.

Of course you don't think it's too much to ask because you probably haven't had to deal with jet lag and being pushed by an airline to work consecutively, you also don't know what it's like trying to stay awake when you're exhausted in a cockpit.

@mynameismatt2010 I agree with you..doctors and firefighters work in 24 hour shifts and still maintain top performance..but my uncle pilots airplanes for southwest and for a while he started off with a 46-47k yearly salary so I agree with jaheenan77 that it does take a while to make a decent wage..but the rest I beg to differ..I guess it goes back to the person..if you can not handle the job requirements and the shifts given to you then choose a different career?

i sleep all the time well on auto pilot but some one is always awake. Autopilots are very advanced and really safe. Plus some airlines wont even pay for pilots to get a hotel room forcing them to sleep in the pilot snooze lounge which is basically a room with a tv and recliners, not a good nights sleep in other words. As a pilot in training ill say this was this wrong yes but was it all there fault no. People dont see what us pilots go through. poor nights sleep for days on end, 14 hour flights.
