Sometimes it's a spur of the moment thing. I had long hair for 15 years, and one day when I intended to get a trim I just decided it was time for it to go, and have had short hair since. Perhaps he just needed a change.

He cut it right before the 'Perfect Strangers' Tour as well. The promo shots prior to the tour, he has long hair, like in Gillan, same in Sabbath, but in 1984/85 he has shorter hair. In 1986 he cut it again. I have a photo from the 'House Of Blue Light' sessions, where his hair is quite short. In 1987, he grew almost an afro. In 1988 his long hair returned and lasted until 1998.

Thanks for the reply, but I didn't ask when. I asked 'why'. :D
Anyway, maybe he just got bored with long hair, but still I don't understand why did he cut it. It really isn't a problem to maintain it. If he was losing hair, then ok, but he still has a full head of hair.
Baaah.. Who cares... He still has his voice ;)

When I saw DP in 2003, Gillan had pretty long hair, but it was gray, he looked cool nonetheless. He isn't balding either, so I don't understand why he cut it either. When you get olde, the actual hair gets thinner, and harder to maintain I've heard, maybe that was the reason.
