  • So if I take my master volume out of the circuit of my bassman 100, that will give me better tone ? also I am updating all the cabs, what about the transformer ? should I just keep the original ? I want my bassman to have the early blackface specs, is it possible at reasonable price, and will it sound better, which specs shall I use out of the early bassmans, which would U say is best ? also what are the best tubes for a bassman apart from nos

  • @UKToneKing I really can't advise you on this your amp is probably closer to the tone you seek stock, rather than swapping a bunch of parts ... IMHO you should always start with gear that sounds right & good and tweak from there. If it does not sound great sell it when its clean and stock and buy the amp you really want.

Whenever I hear a great amp I open it up and make notes, measure voltages look for mods, mistakes and oddities and take extensive notes...

  • @UKToneKing , I always thought reverb in a hot rod deluxe was spring and not tube driven ? that's why I stated tube driven reverb, weather it be tube driven spring reverb or just plain old spring driven, their is a clear difference, I want a blackface or 59 circuite if possible in my bassman, but I am not wanting to go out and spend 00000 to get one, could U let me know what kind of options I have, baring in mind I will not be doing the work, some day maybe lol but like U say not right now

  • @UKToneKing a hot rod deluxe has a spring tank and an IC driven reverb (solid state)

your amp can sound very good but it is a different circuit from a bassman

simply have your tech blackface it

  • @patfurlan well the amp is a bassman, not the 59 original, but still a bassman, it sounds like a bassman, my friends 59 sounds a tad better, but nothing major, every little helps I guess, would U class a blackface as a bassman, or are U of the old circuit only in your opinion, as I know some are

  • I have a 1973 bassman 100, looks like it has 4 6l6 tubes, 2 12ax7s, and it has another one, do U know what it is and what it is used for, just with it being seperate from the others ? mine has master vol, when it's on 10 it sounds more jangle than it dose with the master on 6 and the volume at the same level, also the master seems to dull the tone a little, does the master do that on a bassman, or every amp in general, also if the master is on 10 is it out of the circuit so to speak

  • @UKToneKing so if the master is on 10, it is not effecting the tone of the bassman ? please let me know your answers asap

  • @UKToneKing most of my amps don't have a master volume, I prefer pre-master volume amps from most makers... with most master designs even when they are on 10 they affect the signal... the very first early 70's master volume designs were the worst foor this

  • @patfurlan I could take the master out of the circuit of my bassman ? I was thinking of doing that when I upgrade the caps, would I be able to add a reverb to the bassman circuit and make it tube driven rather than spring ?

  • @UKToneKing you are way over you head.. spring reverb units ARE tube driven & at this point you should buy a non master fender amp with factory reverb and sell or trade that head

I do not think you have the basic knowledge to service your amp let alone turn a VW BUG into a prosche carrera turbo I'm not being mean just save your dough and start with simple projects like wiring a guitar or building a pedal with a kit ... after you build that stuff mod your builds you existing amp is fine

  • @patfurlan u missed my point totally, just wanted your incite on how I could upgrade my circuit, Your right I could go out and buy a blackface bassman, but that would be double what I payed for mine, probably a lot more, it would not cost what I payed for my amp 2 upgrade the caps and take out the master vol, so in the long run it would be a lot cheaper, ( I have an amp tech who I meet with next week to do my upgrades ) I just wanted a clear picture in my mind on what I could do before I met him

  • If I sent you a gutshot could you help me restore my old bassmaster that my tech butchered? Big fan of your Vintage Amplifier posts!

  • yes but you can do it yourself if you just follow the schematic

  • @patfurlan

The only problem is I can't really read schematics, but I can solder and such pretty well. I just want to know how far off it is from a JTM. I'm trying to get mine up snuff per a forumite named Parkhead with some great posts.

  • Awesome

  • Beautifully done, great, educational explanations. YouTube needs more of this. Thanks and keep up the great work. I'd love to hear that Marshall turned up to 6 or 7.....Ah, heck...2-10 in increments!

  • Great video .

  • Molten Martian Tone ... thats it Priceless the amp used on the Clean song Voodoo Child was some sort of fender "little Blond showman" is how eddie Kramer describes it .. showman amps are not little so that leaves us with tweed or blond ...

Slight return was an early super lead

  • Molten Martian Tone ... thats it Priceless

  • I,LOVE YOUR VIDEO,S your, a genuis! which marshall head did hendrix record voodoo child slight return thru? that tone ive been searching for for years. i play thru the 100w vintage modern half stack i get very close, but cant quite get the molten martian tone!!do u mod amps? you,r in put would be greatley appreciated thank you!..btw i read in magazines it was a 59 bassman???

  • I love this video

  • Very informative and well explained lesson.

Just picked up a 73 mark I (super clean, stock, & unmolested). How does this year differ from the earlier ones ? And is this a good candidate for a JTM mod ?

  • Hey, Thanks for the cool & informative videos...I learned more in 20 minutes than reading books for 20 years. Now I wish I had those old traynors back....

    Keep up the good work,

    Jeff

  • Nice presentation, Can you please go over the filtering on the mid 69 amp.

  • filters are 32's cans and 16 's even though they are supposed to be gone by 69 they are just like a 67

  • What are the main, screen, preamp, and PI filter values?

  • @patfurlan Are the decupling resistors both 10K or 10K and 8.2K on the Marshall pa amp?

  • yes standard stuff there ... basically its a 69 that follows the 67 schematic

obviously they were using up old chassis for the PA heads

  • thanks..very intersting..

i had a YBA-1 and it was blowing power tubes regularly.. i couldn't figure it out..i sold it ..i even told the dude that bought it the problem

later, i noticed that my cab wasn't working right..it was the plug..it was loose and sometimes, the tip would lose contact with the plug..damn!

  • nice!!

great vids, thx for posting them!!

  • Hey Pat! I'm a big fan of your "parkhead mod". Since this Marshall was the inspiration behind the mod, could you make a short demo of the amp? I'd love to hear it with the volume up a bit =)

  • Great Idea... I only get a chance to crank an amp when the house is empty ... over time I should get around to doing more stuff like that ...

at 7:30 you can hear how good it sounds ...

its only on 1 or 2 lol it just gets bigger as you wind it up !

  • I'll be waiting ;) It does sound good though!

What guitar were you using? And what's the NFB configuration on this amp? 27k @ 16ohm?

  • 27k @ 16 ohm

  • the 5f6a bassman circuit is my favorite amp

    no matter who made it

but you shouldnt change a mint old amp unless

you are repairing it or it sounds terrible

  • It doesn't sound terrible but comparing to your later pt3 video it sounds really hard but in a much more unpleasent way. It also seems like its focused all in the low midrage but not in a nice way. I'm going to talk to a local tech and ask what he thinks after looking at it because i'm sure he'll know what can help me.

  • Hey I was thinking of changing my YBA-4 to 5f6 Bassman spec, I was wondering if you would think that would be a good idea or not. Also I saw you video on replacing filter caps. Do you believe theres a tone change when changing old filter caps? Mine are from 1972ish so they're way over due to technically be replaced. Thanks.

  • Someone ring the bell. Vintage amp school is IN.
