Thanks, first heard it and bought it on the 'B' side of Space Oddity when it came out excellent, wonderful lyrics, 'the hangman plays his mandolin etc., tremendous positive change to major chord emphases in second half then the sad cadence. A concept track I doubt anyone had done before since maybe Elgar, who obviously didn't have the few minutes available on a 45rpm single.
@LIBERTYTREE98 Arrangement by the amazing Tony Visconti. Ive just been reading about how he persuaded Bowie it needed a full symphonic score. They inspired each other to fabulous creative highs.
why are we drawn to early bowie? fan since 75, saw him at roseland in nyc with only 300 people and he did this song in 1996, and 14 other times. the point is his real fans are out of synch with the common man, misunderstood, seeing, feeling and relating to things that they dont sense or understand. this song captures that, what we feel, the forces we are connected with, how we are protected on our paths. peter gabriel salsbury hill is the same vein, if you really get this, you will like that
This is brilliant. In the early seventies I lived Bowie. I even signed my letters (yeah, letters, remember them?) with 'I bless you madly, sadly as I tie my shoe' at the bottom!! Saw him at Oxford in1972. Can well believe you got an A for these lyrics!!
Bought Space Oddity and found this gem on the 'B' side ~ lyrically and poetically one of his best. Great story telling (as is Space Oddity). Before he got into writing lyrics on the back of cards and picking them at random to create songs. Actually prefer the single version which is sparse and un-orchestrated (apart from a cello), just Dave, an acoustic guitar, and claps ~ song around the campfire at night stuff!
im 13 and not a lot of people in my lessones dont no who bowie is and when i die this is the song i wood have to have at my fonrall i love bowie all i have on mt ipod is david bowe, the who, frankmusik, and a bit of ragay and when people hera me lishing to it thay alway ask me who it is because thay dont know who it is abd sometimes thay like it but how can you not love david bowie :D
It's not his song u know? BUT he is awesome and I once tripped all night repeatedly watching the concert on VHS and this song made me soo sad, especially as he acts it out in mime. Ahh memories.....
@moonagedaydream100 this was a good thing i did too but like a bit ago and i just get it back and it had A* on it so thank you a lot and thank you david bowie and thank you alluurpo for puting this up
Damn, I never thought of that. I knew this song and all from this record by heart, still do. It makes me sad a little that he does not recognise these songs. But I guess creativity moves ever onward, This I understand. It is for us left in the wake of this wave of beauty to pine for what was
I only found out about this and the other songs from this album cos I recently bought the score for the album and I am so glad I did (even though as such I can't play any of the songs on there)
This IS a great Bowie song but he does a (hard to believe) even better version of this song you can actually see and hear LIVE on the Ziggy Stardust Movie on dvd. Which was the last Bowie/Spiders show ever. It was filmed in London 1973.
Love this song. To me, Space Oddity is the best album that has been or will be ever released. It has been with me as a young child, though my youth and now with me into the future. It means more to me than any other music. God bless my mother and father for introducing me to this music!
space oddity IS a very good album. perhaps cos of its innocence, it's pre-fame status, the fact that the songs on it are not and never have been mainstream (aprt from the title track). perhaps its cos of the the words, the poetry and the underlying loneliness. perhaps it's bowie's voice. above all, it might be cos of its simplicity.
Thank you for posting this. An often missed gem from Bowie.
