I LOVE THIS SONG AND REMEMBER WHEN IT CAME OUT. I REMINDS ME OF ANIMALS IN PERIL-ALL ANIMALS. I LOVE ANIMALS, CAN'T SEEING THEM IN PERIL. GREAT POSTING.
@lotr123sw123456 Awesome thanks! I had to double check because there were so many songs with that title. I figured since this was 1966, that it would be the most likely one.
This hit by Roger Williams was the 76th #1 song on Billboard's newly formed chart that is now known as the Adult Contemporary charts. It also hit #7 on the Top 40 charts.
I remember the first time I ever heard this magnificent song (on a Motorola transitor radio) back in 1966, a beautiful late summer day and my whole life still ahead of me, too! I bought the record (45 rpm) for about for 89 cents a few days later. Played it many times over. I really liked KAPP record's emblem also.
Happy to have lived through such an era of great popular music. Many thanks Roger for being a big part of it. The memories are priceless!
A friend emailed me and told me, and I'm very sad to hear that Roger Williams has passed. He knows how I feel about the song "Born Free" by Roger. A year ago I found the sheet music for "'Born Free' as recorded by Roger Williams by Kapp Records". When I saw it, I couldn't believe it, and I bought it! I'm still working the piece because I've always loved his version of it. I have his album with it. This song is so majestic and beautiful! The part starting at 2:11 is just the best! RIP Roger!
Has anybody else noticed that "Star Wars" is the same melody as "Born Free" -- just upside down? I had the privilege of performing as part of his back-up band, and he pointed that out as part of the show. He's not only a wonderful performer, he's a genuinely decent man.
@FreedomZealot I heard the same thing! I've even tried to play "Born Free" on the piano backwards, and I'm not hearing the "Star Wars" theme yet! Thankfully, I have the sheet music for both as it would happen. I do remember seeing that video on YT. I'll have to look for it. Thanks for the reminder!
Today I read a sad news, that the composer of this song, the famous Jeff Barry died. He will be remembered for great film songs, particulary many James Bond movies (Golfinger, You Only Live Twice and so on.
I remember listening to ths on the radio when I was in fourth grade that year. What a great song! A classic! Better than all of this junk that's out today.
A beautiful song on a grand scale. The music is simply inspiring. One can almost feel their heart soar just listening to this! Thank you for a fantastic post.
@gva0917 Amen! I completely agree. This song is inspiring! It makes a person want to learn to play the piano. That's for sure! Just to restate what you said "A Beautiful song on a Grand scale", and one of my all time favorite songs EVER!
@erty1800 I suggest looking at all the versions of the song and seeing which version you perfer. There are around 5 versions of this song
(1.Andy Williams 2.Frank Sinatra 3.Matt Monro 4.Roger Whittaker 5.this version)
I think that the best version that would suite the Cello and really feature your instrument would be the MATT MONRO version. I wish you success and hope that my opinion was of help. I just thought that this version would be too rushed for the Cello to feature its full potential.
True testament of a song's greatness is not only so many artists recording their version of it,but to have hits with it in such a short period of time of one another as took place with this song.Matt Monro had a hit with it about the same time. These songs have such beautiful links to a special time and/or place.Their shelf life is perpetuity. :)
Back in the 1960's, variety was the word on top 40 radio stations like 930 WKY here in OKC. A great record then. A Great record now. My hat , er maybe I should say, my KAPP is off to Roger Williams and to you for posting this.

Well, I come across Roger William's Born Free here on YT, and yesterday I went to a resale shop that had the Sheet Music for Born Free "as recorded by Roger Williams", and I got it. I hope one day I could play it even half as decently as he does. Since I'm already a subscriber to you, MrTrashcan1, I can't subscribe to you! lol I just want to say you always do nice work. Thanks and God Bless!
Roger is an unique jazz style player. He has speed and accuracy. Now when you harness this with an orchestra and a recording stuido, hold him down so to speak, something wonderfull happens. Some of the most beautiful piano and orchestra recordings ever, came to life! Thanks Roger
@harfuch1 Tal vez hubiera sido mejor si dijeron "Nacen Libres" en vez de decir "Naci Gratis" por que eso quiere decir "Yo naci sin costar nada" ROFL. I better share in English what I'm writing. (lol) Harfuch1 said that the dj's Spanish translations today are pretty poor. I said "Perhaps it would have been better for the dj's to have said Nacen Libres (ie. Born Free) instead of saying "Naci Gratis" (which means I was born at no charge)! LOL Thanks!
@harfuch1 You have me cracking up now! I see what you're saying Now! lol I thought he just translated it poorly, but he was talking about himself. I see that now. LOL Again, you've got me laughing, and that is funny! I hope you found my comment humorous though. lol He may be saying "Naci Gratis" (LOL), but then the doctor bills show up later. lol Thanks so much for the laugh. We need to laugh.
Roger Williams and specifically this song is why I'm a musician today... and I've had the opportunity to tell Roger as much. He's a great musician with an amazing legacy.

Algun comentario?
