I don't like the way that John Merrick was portrayed in this play. I am currently playing Merrick in a high school play for One Act and it's quite the challenge. He had little contorting of the body, he spoke as if Merrick was incapable of speaking, mentally retarded when he was actually quite brilliant. My opinion I guess, all directors think differently and have different visions.
@HunnerPate I agree with you - in that the way Merrick is directed how to speak makes him appear ''imbecillic''. The real Merrick really had difficulty talking, but it was a physical problem only, and whenever I see clips of this play, Merrick gives the impression of speaking like an idiot - not what he says, but how he speaks. It actually makes me cringe, and puts me off. I thought I was the only one who thought like that.
I had the pleasure of seeing Bowie in this very play and he was incredible! I remember being absolutely riveted to my seat and could fully imagine the twisted mass that was John Merrick in the uncostumed, unadorned body of Bowie. He proved the true depth of his total genius on that occasion.
I was in the third row-center-to see this play. He is so extrordinarily talented, No makeup--no costumes--yet we all had tears in our eyes. A once in a lifetime experience. He is wonderful!!!!!
The speaking voice has too much of a sing song quality to it... It's almost melodic... He would have done better not to remind everyone that he is a singer by using such a musical sounding speaking voice
He seems like Renfield with this role. I always thought he kinda had that Renfield quality, but with that voice...omg. No, but I love Renfield so it's not even bad. <3 It's SO GOOD.
He's so smart. I love him. <3 If I had to sit down and talk to anyone, it would be him.
@DrOmega I don't know. It would probably go with his trend that all his characters either a) Die or b) Don't get what they wanted. c) End up miserable. Or a combination of them or all of them. Then again maybe he knew someone else would do the role far better later on. (Dark Knight).
This is the weirdest thing I've ever seen David Bowie do... I love David, no matter what he does with his career, but this acting is so good I can almost believe David has some mental disease... *shudders*
@LadyBowie1119 Im sorry, but Joseph Merrick did not have a ''mental disease'' - there was absolutely nothing wrong with his mind. THis play and its portrayal of Merrick in this way upsets me - not having a go at you. And Im not having a go at David Bowie either, because hes a great person, actor, singer. Its not his fault - its the directors interpretation, and its just so WRONG.
Oh, no, I'm sorry. I know Merrick did not but that's just the way it looked as David acted it out. I read about Merrick after seeing this. That's just the feeling I got watching David.
@LadyBowie1119 That was my point... Its the interpretation that gives that infortunate impression. I was having a convo with someone this morning who feels the same...And of course, again, I like David Bowie - its not his fault. :)
Wow, this is the most believable acting i've seen him do. I feel bad now for thinking he was a crap actor! And he's so funny in the interview. Great quality video too! :)

@DrOmega I don't think it would work. People would be more sympathetic towards the Joker.

David Bowie, in his role as the Elephant Man, sounds just like K-9, the robot dog, from Doctor Who. Affirmative!
