Dear "Kalm Report" fans, there's a feature article in today's (April 23) LA Times, Arts and Culture section on the "Kalm Report" and the "Jeff Koons On the Roof" program by staff writer Thomas Mulligan Check it out, JK
I agree. To me it is morally repugnant to use the killing of an animal to create art. It is however an historic practice going back as long as man. I've killed rats with a trap in my loft (didn't want them chewing on my babies), but didn't consider it "art".
Regarding Right to Life vs. Pro Choice I'm constantly amazed by the way some people freak out about killing a chicken or fish to eat and survive, but consider snuffing out a fetus (a clump of tissue) all the way up to a minute before birth, as a right. I'm personally pro choice, pro death penalty, and for eating meat (in moderation). One of the dichotomies we face daily is: for something to live something has to die.
not making more; just trying to stop people from leaving all their money to their dog or cat, dogs wearing sweaters and insipid little dogs that shit in planes on the runway.....people are more important than pets, thats all i was trying to say:)
those things don't absolve the artist, nor do they absolve us. i mean; not eating meat or fighting for the rights of animals does not absolve you from the horrors of how we get our food industrially. they are noble sentiments, i try too, but animals are our bitches! "this aint utopia"
i'm not defending abuse. is the depiction of the crucifixtion an advocacy of capital punishment? or an advocacy of suffering? i don't know. i'm talking about using our food as a mataphor for our everyday abuses of PEOPLE. i use paint, it's not like i use a dead dog to wipe up my spills.i understand your point on a gut level, i hate killing bugs, but art is a vehicle for communication, good and bad. as mr. kalm states a lot, "this aint utopia."
representation in art is one thing; killing animals in art is another...back in the seventies a group of new york artists decidd that they were going to do it, that they were going to draw a line...
asdffd, do you ever think of these artists who work with animals as people who are trying to shock us into self-recognition. hear me out. your Rwanda example is good, people starving and dying every day while millions of us live relatively prosperous lives, access to food and medicine. its easy to say you buy 'organic' products and love animals. i respect that. yet, tens of thousands of PEOPLE are suffering and dying every day; we all go on like it doesn't exist. just my opinion:)
remember the plane crash were the survivors had to eat the dead to survive. wow. i don't like pets because i always feel sorry for them, kinda like jail. clear cutting forests is bad, i like trees, but i still enjoy drawing on paper. all this talk is making me hungry for a cheeseburger:), i'll have it delivered while you go out and hunt?
with all due respect; the way we all get our food every day from massive(not very nice) animal factories, the animal parts in our health and beauty products, the animal parts used in our automobiles and the countless throw-away pets being killed every day because someone gets bored....your rage seems a little misplaced.
Gosh, I think these paintings are the most interesting I have seen in a long time. The Butzer paintings are luscious. The Bucher videos are amazing. I wish I could see those in person. It is hard to understand what is going on via video. Thanks Mr. Kalm.
Willi's glass-brick videos were projected from in front.
As for the homeless, there are court cases claiming the constitutional right to sleep over a subway grate and eat out of a trash can. So long as everything's color coordinated it's a question of lifestyle, like being an artist. JK
they are like dubuffet and joyce pensato drunk on kippenberger. this work, or its feeling, is what the whitney biannual is missing! i like these paintings, they are alive and not lecturing me. thanks mr. kalm.
i just went and saw this show in person.....these paintings are dead, in a bad way. horrible. 5th rate kippenberger. no joyce pensato here...these are unappealing.:(

these paintings really are descendants of German Expressionism. Delightfully honest.
I like the uniformity of the work.

I'm glad to hear of your concerns with cruelty and its infliction on lives of the innocent. Of course you must believe in "right to life" as well?
