Dude the ramp up to the end you're looking for is supposed to be in your head. He interviews politicians who believe in fairy tale nonsense. He talks to people who want to brainwash children to believe this foolish nonsense. As much as religion hinders scientific understanding and advancement, the best ramp up to the end he could've done would be to show you just how many people there are believing and defending fairly tale nonsense. These people don't care about truth. They are everywhere
This movie changed my perspective on religion. It made me question my beliefs, and challenge the bible, and religion as a whole. Im happier than ever now that I watched this movie. It's not only a comedy, but a great film that mocks the stupidity and the primitive like nature of religion. It led me to good truths.
No, I think it was intended to end that way for a reason. If he would have said at the beginning of the movie that religion could lead to massive atrocities (as it already has), it would just pass as an opinion. But after the whole movie where he shows how profondly those people believe in their religion, which goes pretty well with laughs, the effect is there. I wouldn't change it, cause it reflects the reality, religion is funny by its ridiculosity, but it's also dangerous.
I thought the same thing. And they could have ramped it. They could have started with "Religion is silly LOL" and then over the movie, we could see the religious people start going from funny to creepy to scary. And then we see his message that religion is not only silly but dangerous.
Haha the consistency issue was so true! I still think while it wasn't the most masterfully crafted film, the content made it probably the best documentary I've ever seen.
If they had begun with the sillier things and then slowly built up to the scarier things about religion, it would have been perfect. Its target audience would probably be people who do not see religion as a threat so you can draw them in with the silly stuff. Once you have them agreeing with the film, the film can lead them through the more scary stuff, and hopefully change there opinion.
As for that aggressive-orthodox Jew, I noticed that Bill tried to interrupt him all the time (as he did with everyone else), but this guy simply wouldn't let him. As a result, he ended up looking like he was going to blow at any moment.
Pretty much my thoughts as well, about the ending. This was basically just a collection of clips we could laugh at, and there just isn't any good conclusion to that sort of thing except "that's all for this time, folks, see you next week!" The ending was a shabby attempt at a conclusion, in which he just threw out blanket statements which were a total non-sequitur to anything we had seen up to that point. "Those guys are silly. THEREFORE THEIR BELIEFS ARE DANGEROUS AND WE NEED TO SILENCE THEM."
are u kidding, the ending was great. that message needed to be seen. visual footage was great and the words were so wonderfully orgastrated and poetic. bill maher deserved that ending. even if its suppose to be funny, a movie about how crazy religion is needs to have a final overall statement of what the maker of the film is trying to convey. if the film had just ended without that ending , something would have been lacking.
i completely agree.. it needed that ended to drive home how dangerous religion can , is, and has always been.. i found it really funny and enjoyed the whole movie and was glad of the overall message of the film
I was pretty disappointed in the movie. Some of it was funny, but you could anticipate most of the jokes so it wasn't very memorable. I don't think an American atheist film needs to be like a BBC documentary but it should have been intelligent enough to get people thinking. Bill was like a kid who spent a week goofing off and then winged his school project at the last minute for the end piece. How do we deduce any of the conclusions he makes in the end from what we saw in rest of the film?
it left no foreshadowing? Whoah, really? I don't think you know what that word means. Anyway, the ending is pretty much telling you, "yeah, this shit's pretty funny and all, but it's also really fucking dangerous and history has a good chance of repeating itself with...well, bigger weapons and more technology."
haha This was very entertaining as you usually are!
I loved the movie, but I really like Bill Maher (never miss his show on Friday evenings). It's funny that you mention stonerisms, because Bill is an advocate and inhaler... =)
Good review. Dece movie. Could've been great if Bill Maher wasn't in it. I got annoyed when he constantly cut off people when they're in the middle of talking. The irony was although the movie was mildly funny the "scary" ending was the funniest, most unexpected and most entertaining part of the film.
It took Bill "Mayer" the entire movie to make the point that, religion will be the end of us. The ending wrapped up the point of the movie quite nicely ;)
i loved the part were this guy said a man wanted to kill himself for this women and the revrend said turn that passion to god and it showed a clip of a car (suiciced bomber goin off) lol
Agree, but also disagree. More agree then disagree. The ending did feel a bit out of place, but then again, a little towards the end, they went into some of the stuff that religion can do, such as killing your children, killing people because of a fucking cartoon, killing someone for making a movie, etc. But even then, still out of place and little disjointed. Many times in the movie, I felt lacking. Such as shroud of turgen, the watr analogy. I would of debunked those easily.
the shroud of turen is from the 13th hundreds, So testing proves the shroud of turen is bullshit, and water can't be all 3 forms at the same fucking time. I recommend watching Richard Dawkins "root of all evil" that goes into tons of stuff, I do wish Sam Harris would make a movie, and go into faith healings and make it obvious that no parent would of done this, only a parent who believed in faith healing could of.
I think the punch-in-the-face ending just kinda kept people watching due to the no-turning-back-now overly-hyphenated-description. The last part just knocks you on your ass and gets you thinking, I think a segue would have warned people it's okay to turn off the DVD now, etc.
SolRosenberg84, good review. My major gripe with the film was that it did not do a thorough treatment of all the lunacy that exists in the major religions. Maher seemed to only engage the literalist Christians, Muslims, Mormons, and Jews. This is fine, but in order to get the point across that religion is irrational and dangerous in any form - whether fundamentalist or moderate - he needed to show how even the moderate religious people hold inane beliefs.
Good Review, but I enjoyed the bizarre, fucking creepy Willy Wonka laughing his ass off, everyone else screaming, chicken getting his head cut off ending. xD
I don't think it was like the willy wonka analogy, I think it was more like an offensive joke (which, considering the content, is appropriate). It was like (statement making fun of religion), then (pause for laughter), then an "ahhahaha, but seriously though, religion will kill us all and this is why." If it had never gone into the final part, it wouldn't have really had a message, and I think the way they did it was most appropriate to drive it home. w/e though.
Dude the ramp up to the end you're looking for is supposed to be in your head. He interviews politicians who believe in fairy tale nonsense. Religulous was a terrible film that lacked focus, wasn't funny, and was extremely sloppy in it's treatment of Christian theology and history.
