Good question!. I believe the U.S. space program now focus on Constellation Project, trips to the Mon and Mars, unfortunatelly no more Shuttle flights anymore, this is an opportunity for the private entrepreneurs to develope a new spacescraft more advanced than the shuttle.
yup...we´ve learned from mistakes, there´s a lot of knowledge of the dangers of space and re entry and even when the aircraft is 20 years old, aerodynamics don´t change overtime so the shuttle could be used safely well into 2020..
@AtlantisB737 Maybe a new shuttle. Don't forget there are things like metal-fatigue and maintenance costs too. Probably a new shuttle can be made in a way that less maintenance is needed.
we have only two accidents w the space shuttles . i think we can still fly them on till the next space plane gets up in running
