It's always nice to hear a song that's about something, rather than the cookie-cutter jingles being pounded out of Nashville by random songwriters held up in motel rooms with laptops and cocain, trying they're best to write songs that include the words "Beer, God, Friday Night, and Sunday morning" -- So that they may make to Some Singer who doesn't care that the song is fabricated.
Chris knight is a common man ,a real human being , self made . He is the greatest song writer of our age ,in the same leage as John Prine or Bob Zimmerman . If the absolute truth was known i bet there are a hundreds of nashville country music icons that wish that they had the song writeing capabilities and just one third of the tallent that chris has and that is a fact.
@KEEFJONZE no dude he is not stoned, he is from kentucky even though it is the land of some wicked ass red top crop grown in the hills of the state. The thing about people from kentucky is the fact that it is hard to know if they are stoned or just swimming in kentucky the gene pool.
@johnsprostock 1.) Texas doesn't have any more Kentuckians like Chris Knight to claim as their own 2.) Nashville may be a musical dead zone but only as far as radio is concerned.
This is what true country is. He's humble and just telling a story not trying to be the biggest redneck he can be like a lot of nashville singers.....i wish there were more artists like him
As a single mom that grew up in a town of less than 500, thought I made it out and ended up back after all and now I have to drive 86 miles one way to have a job, but at least my son is well taken care of and is growing up the best way possible... some dreams will come true, some won't and sometimes new ones get thrown at you.
You should listen to his cover of Robert Earl Keen's "Undone" (title track) on the REK tribute album. He takes that song to a new level that I didn't think was possible. (No offense to Robert Earl, but the song was meant for Chris Knight.)
that woman wants to have aggressive sex with the best country singer ever.. NO HOMO! lawls he is my inspiration for playing i just need to find the chords and stuff to his songs

Chris Knight is SO country, it's not even funny. God bless that man and his music. I like all kinds of genres, but country and rock are two that I grew up on, and keep coming back to. I'm so glad there's some real passion in music that I can keep coming back to.
Damn, like his music but why won't he face the girl he's talking with? Just staring off in some other direction. If he ain't blind thats just plain rude.
The rope symbolizes the reason to hang himself, without having enough rope, you can't do it; he's got it pretty good for how little he's got--just enough to get by. It's hard to take advantage of the good things in life, if the good things in life are limited... Beautiful song. Heart of Country? I couldn't agree more.
"The Rope," actually symbolizes Chris' wrongs. He exposes his faults, and, deliberately introduces everyone to the opportunities in which he didn't capitalize upon. True country right here, y'all.
What are yall even talking about?!? I'm from Texas this guy plays all the time. And about the bigger and better things. He knows that if he did go bigger someone would try and change him and make him more of a country pop idol. That's why he remains where he is. And us people from Texas get to see him play quit often!!!
Chris Knight is a songwriting GENIUS! No doubt about it. But this is one of those songs I hate just as much as I love. I have a hard time listening to it. Hits way too close to home. I guess that's how you tell a phenomenal songwriter from a run-of-the-mill songwriter... By how deep they can cut you.
Wow. This is a great song. I am from WV and think Chris is from KY. Same kind of area. I can relate to the person in the story a little. I; however, went to school and got out...so I made it right? Then why do I miss home so much ;) Love these strory songs! Great job songwriting!

I heard "Rita's Only Fault" about 5 months ago on the Campus Radio Station in Raleigh NC and it was such a PILE DRIVER that I pulled off the road to listen to it. I thought "who IS this guy?" Fortunately WKNC has an online component and you can get the playlist. I have since become a huge huge fan.
I just love to listen to this old boy. He's from my part of the world, and he reminds me of several folks I grew up with. He always writes from the heart.
lack of means (money/talent/education/etc.) will prevent you from getting yourself into trouble because you can't afford it. That is why you follow the rules.
You can't lose what you don't have. The guy he describes lives in a small, simple world. As long as he is confined to it there really isn't much he can screw up. He made decisions early in his life that limited his future. So, while he could have done bigger things with his life, his only consolation is that he can't fail to reach his dreams because he has given up on reaching them long ago.
I kinda disagree, I mean yes, he could have done bigger and better things, but I wouldnt say his only consolation is that he cant fail to reach his dreams, seems to me, he has changed his dreams and now realizes what his priorities in life are, and should be. working hard, and loving his family. At least thats what it means to me.
@mistascott007 its obvious you've never lived in a small town, you don't have a choice, there's no greener side. You've never had to live without enough rope.
There's one of Chris's songs whre the chorus goes "someones crying uin the hall, Oh lord help us all, were just trying to stay afloat, If you could lord send a boat" can anyone tell me the name of that song please
that's the song i discovered him with. i actually heard it on the radio (crazy huh) and HAD to find out who he was. he's become my favorite, along with miranda lambert. he's just great.
haha actually, before miranda was on nashville star, she started in the texas country scene (i have her cd from before she was on it) and chris is considered red dirt for the most part. :)
What's the deal with all these goddamn Brits and Aussies in broadcasting? I don't really have anything against them, I just get tired of hearing their tiresome accents on the air.
BTW, Chris is great, ain't he? Good ol' boy, too, from what I hear from friends in the music biz.
Chris Knight goes so fuckin hard. If you don't feel his lyrics you're probably some rich asshole that had everything handed to him. CK is the real fuckin deal, he writes from the heart. The last of a dying breed
Chris Knight is an awesome storyteller! BTW, is it bad that we find his music so dear to our hearts, here in Kentucky, we cannot resist the urge to sing along, very loudly! Great singer songwriter with a voice as gritty as some of the folks who find themselves in his character studies. He is also generous with his time and kind to his fans.
Thank God for alternative music. I would never found him any other way. Country music sold out a long time ago and It's a shame. How will the next generation of singer songwriters come along? Oh yea, they will have to go back two or more generations to be inspired. I hate to see what will become of country when this trend continues.
The name of that song is "Danville" it`s off the new album, Heart of Stone. It`s an awesome CD! I think I have a video of him playing it live, I`ll try to get that up for you.
Thanks for the reply video and great to see him performing from the new album! Heart of Stone is a great album and should be bringing him much success.
this song is on gac a country tv station on the sattilite.. and this is a damn good song but down the river is the best song.. or it aint easy being me
I do love "Down the River" as does my sister and me Mam.
All of us are from Lancashire in the North West of England and we really wish he'd come to England for just one gig. In the meantime we're saving to travel to the U.S. purely to listen to the guy.
out of all of his songs, this one if my absolute favorite! it reminds me so much of my daddy and everyone in our tiny little town. my dad doesn't work for the city, but he does work for the county. but we're just blue collar people like in the song, trying to make a living.
Chris Knight goes hard. He's not a rockstar. I don't care about him not puttin on a show. I like it when bands cut the bullshit and they just sing their damn songs.
I'm going to disable comments if they carry on like this. Come on guys, its about Chris Knight. If you love it, then leave a comment, if you don't, then move on.
For all the people that don't like this...then don't listen to it. Go watch your Kenny Chesney and and the big queer that sings that I got my game on song(cant remember his name). You wouldn't know talent if hit hit you in the ass.
Chris Knight isn't trying to be a showman. All he's doing is writing what he knows and putting all of his heart behind the songs, if you're looking for showmanship go pay 80$ for some nash-vegas singers that dont even know how to play guitar. If you're looking for true lyrics and heart go see Chris Knight.
I'll buy 10 never get burned out listening to this guy Awsome

You can hear two of his new songs in their entirity on his myspace page (chrisknightmusic). Sounding good and as I predicted, a bit more rocking....

out of all of his songs, this one if my absolute favorite! it reminds me so much of my daddy and everyone in our tiny little town. my dad doesn't work for the city, but he does work for the county. but we're just blue collar people like in the song, trying to make a living.

Very good to hear! How were the new songs? Were they more rocking like some songs on Enough Rope or more country sounding?

How come they don't play this stuff on the radio? Great Song!

For the same reason they don't play Steve Earle much...its just too damn good! (Saying that, Chris Knight was played on BBC Radio 2 last Thursday!)

chris knight is amazing his lyrics realy do speak to you unlike most of this mainstream shit

Chris Knight goes hard. He's not a rockstar. I don't care about him not puttin on a show. I like it when bands cut the bullshit and they just sing their damn songs.

Chris Knight is the shit, great song

I'm going to disable comments if they carry on like this. Come on guys, its about Chris Knight. If you love it, then leave a comment, if you don't, then move on.

That's pretty fucking sad you'd think Trace Atkins is a big queer.

On the edge of country huh? Sounds more country than this shit on the radio

How can one not like this guy?
Maybe he is a little different but differnt can be so good if one gives it a chance.
newarkcatholicfan 3 years ago
For all the people that don't like this...then don't listen to it. Go watch your Kenny Chesney and and the big queer that sings that I got my game on song(cant remember his name). You wouldn't know talent if hit hit you in the ass.
redas2008 3 years ago
Chris Knight isn't trying to be a showman. All he's doing is writing what he knows and putting all of his heart behind the songs, if you're looking for showmanship go pay 80$ for some nash-vegas singers that dont even know how to play guitar. If you're looking for true lyrics and heart go see Chris Knight.

I saw him live. Love his music but he puts on a terrible show.
