I knew both men, Dr. Sheppard was my physician. I wish Bill had kept the Serpentarium open. It was something to see. The Cobar which stood infront of his shop not is on top of South Miami High School (at least the last time I was by). Rest in Peach Bill.
I always wanted to go to the Serpentarium when I saw that big Cobra statue in front but my parents never too me :( I visted one in the Orlando area but I'm not sure if it was run by Haast. A piece of old Miami is now gone. RIP.
I lived in Miami at the time and saw Bill a half dozen times. Was there the day before the 6 yr old was eaten by a crocodile. He would stare down the snakes and snatch them up like lightning.
If it wasn't for Bill Hasst, I would never have my love of reptiles. Bill you were a pioneer and onto something about the use of venom in medicine. I hope that your research still carries on. The world will miss you. R.I.P.
Rip Bill. Michele, condolences to your family. In the 1970s we caught rattlesnakes at Richmond Air Force Base in Miami and would sell them to the serpentarium for venom at $3.50 per foot.
Happy Birthday, Bill. I visited your serpentarium in the 1960s on a field trip from St Hugh School. And there is Dr Ben Sheppard--our family pediatrician! God bless his memory
@MIKESOWELL "As of 2008 he continued to have his wife inject him with small amounts of snake venom" basically he injected venom in himself, the process is called "Self immunisation" it is known to make your immune system MUCH stronger then it already is. He died at the age off 100 in 2011 June 15th.
@lSaif I know about his self injections. I read about one particular snake that bit him. He is one of the few, if not the only person to have survived that species of snake bite. Meanwhile, the snake died 10 days later.
