Blacks are most abundant in southeastern states and the washington metropolitan area, while Asians are more abundant in california and hawaii (In fact, an estimated 39.7% of the asian population is in hawaii). Just using the stats you provide does not show the whole picture especially when in 2006(USA): Black populace= 38.3mil; Asian populace= 13.1mil. almost a 3:1 ratio. Also note you started the discussion by talking about high-end careers: doctors, engineers, etc. Not associates. Even talking about associate degrees, there's a higher % of asians with degrees than blacks. As the level of degree goes up, the ratio improves in favor of asians by at least 2:1 and doctors almost 3:1.
Nearly 40% of the Asian population lives in Hawaii another 12% in California whereas a great majority of the African American population live in the deep south. Which locations have a better education system? Hawaii or Louisiana? Better to raise a child in? Better infrastructure? Our president went to school in hawaii. Would he have done as well growing up in Louisiana?

I've seen rumors on other blogs that such a tape exists; these quoted Gates as using the term "white mother fucker". If it does exist, I'll bet it will get leaked one way or another. Either would be more interesting than a 2 way radio conversation, in which Crowley would only have keyed the mic when he was talking.

Dr. Gates was arrested for "contempt of cop", plain and simple. If you read Crowley's report, Crowley left the residence and then came back onto Gates' property to arrest him. Crowley let his personal emotion get involved and that is why Gates was arrested.
As a police officer you have to remain emotionally detached from the situation, you are there to investigate not to instigate and escalate .

Gates is either very stupid or he wanted to create a situation so that he could have a forum from which he could speak about this matter later. There is no "racial profiling" (which I feel is a myth anyway) in this instance because the police were responding to a call that they had received.

Wrong! Officers must know the basics of the constitution. Otherwise their arrests can get thrown out of court. And you don't have to be a "legal expert" to know that you can't arrest someone just because you didn't like what he said. Also it requires little "legal expertise" to understand the 4th amendment. You can't barge into someone's home unless you've witnessed a crime or have a warrant. This officer claims to be a profiling expert. Instead he should study the constitution.

I'm a white home owner. If, for some reason, I had to break into my own house, I'd expect to have to show my ID to any cop, black or any other color, who was called, then wait for it to be verified. I'd also expect to be arrested (or worse) if I insulted his race or mother. Napolitano and Harvey Silverglade, both of whom I respect, may be right that it's legal to say anything to a cop at any volume for any length of time; I'm not convinced it should be if he's in the process of doing his job.

But I've read that it has not always been interpreted that way. I suspect that if it were enforced in every way possible, it would eventually be struck down, since it covers just about everything except breathing, and seems more than a little vague.

According to the report, there were plenty of witnesses though out most of this incident (from whom we've heard almost nothing). More will come out about this; at this point there's not enough evidence to prove that any of the parties deliberately lied; most of the accounts were pieced together from human memory, which is never very reliable.

I think it's bullshit that they can call this racial profiling. For all the police knew, he could have been a thief, and could have been potentially dangerous. Just using the stats you provide does not show the whole picture especially when in 2006(USA): Black populace= 38.3mil; Asian populace= 13.1mil. almost a 3:1 ratio. Also note you started the discussion by talking about high-end careers: doctors, engineers, etc. Not associates. Even talking about associate degrees, there's a higher % of asians with degrees than blacks. As the level of degree goes up, the ratio improves in favor of asians by at least 2:1 and doctors almost 3:1.

I've seen rumors on other blogs that such a tape exists; these quoted Gates as using the term "white mother fucker". If it does exist, I'll bet it will get leaked one way or another. There might also be a tape of the call that Gates reportedly made (possibly to someone at the Cambridge police: "Get the chief!") . Either would be more interesting than a 2 way radio conversation, in which Crowley would only have keyed the mic when he was talking.

I was not talking about foreigners coming here WITH a degree. Quite to the contrary, they own small shops, or work in restaurants, (or both) and do whatever it takes to see to it that their kids have a better education, and better life. Bingo, 1-2 generations... done. Not 4-5 generations in the same place doing the same nothing.

Seriously, do you know how long 4-5 generations IS? My grandmother was 100 years old when she died. My mother just turned 60. She has a Masters of Science and a Doctorate of Divinity. I'm 33 and have a Bachelors of Art. We both paid our OWN way.
5 generations ago, in MY family, was right after the civil war.

I do agree that they're more Conservative than other news stations, but despite that, they do have many guests on who are left-wing leaning. Of all of the news stations, I would consider it the most balanced purely because the anchors commentate, but rarely give their own opinion on air. I am right wing leaning, but I know racism when I see it and don't agree with it. Perhaps I'm just not as picky about comments as lefties lol...

Foreigners from other minorities are not 'cranking out' doctors and engineers anymore than any ethnic group. There are plenty of black doctors, lawyers and engineers in the US.
Also, has it ever occurred to you that foreigners can get engineering degrees and doctorates in whatever country they are from?

There's a world out there that you need to learn. Every nation has minorities and many of them don't help minorities gain higher education. Example: Malaysia. Population: Mostly indigenous muslim with indian and chinese as their biggest minorities. Guess who gets to go to college with government aid? Muslim. Guess who don't make it into college unless they have near perfect scores? Minorities, and with no aide.

The guy I was talking to was talking about people that are minorities HERE. Hong Kong Chinese are minorities HERE. They can get their degrees in Hong Kong and come over here to work. Indians are minorities HERE. They can get their degrees in INDIA.
I have some friends attending Naval Academy in pinas. Their goal is to get a degree to work abroad.

ALSO, if you can't afford to go to school in YOUR country (In this case, Malaysia), as a minority, I don't know how you can afford it in the US. Not only would you have to get a Education VISA, but you wouldn't be allowed to WORK and earn money.
When I was in school, I had a few classmates that were foreigners. They mostly had rich parents that could afford the tuition. I don't remember seeing any downtrodden villagers in the computer lab.

Chinese from Malaysia are still considered Chinese here. Your generalization is wrong because many can't get a degree in the land they were born in. secondly, going to school OVER HERE, is very expensive. You have to get a student VISA and you aren't allowed to earn a living while you're here unless you're a citizen.

For me it's costed a lot. I have multiple graduate degrees. Over 240 credit hours last i checked. For foreigners... its insane, they are charged a premium rate to go to college here.

I said FOREIGNERS from other minorities. It isn't enough that you are asian in the comparison, you have to be here for no longer than 1 generation. YOU keep misreading what I say.
Also, in their country, they're NOT minorities. If you're from the philippines, and you want to go to a school there, you're NOT a minority. If you're Japanese in JAPAN, and you want to go to school there, YOU'RE NOT A MINORITY.
I know a few Dayak that had no problem getting their masters in Indo.
