  • Your setup is a thing of beauty! Nice to see a fellow C64 freak, really informative stuff man!

  • This is epic - C64 forever !

  • Great job mate. I've never seen a commodore used as a server. Nice job indeed.

  • @summer20105707 Thanks for the compliment. I take pride in it.

Though it's actually the PC which is the server, with the Commodore 64 down and uploading data with it. But that far from denudes the magic of downloading programs and loading them directly into the Commie, or being able to load programs from magazine discs again or save your own priceless work to backup media like Flash cards.

  • NB - At 5 mins in I mentioned digitally copying data tapes by linking Datasettes. In actuality this is copying a fresh rendering of the data noise, though it's still true to say such copies aren't straight analogue dubs of the original tapes.

Dubbing to the PC via the c64 serial DOES constitute a digital copy of the data stored on the analogue tape.

  • Oh this is beautiful. I was only a kid when this was out, and was poor. Please show us EVERYTHING about this. You are a very good speaker. Really, show us everything this done.

  • @analyzingfunny Then you're in luck. My alternate channel, TheDustpile, contains a good few videos featuring chiptune soundtracks.

I have also compiled a huge amount on the C64 at w w w dustybin org uk, which you can view. Lastly, my pieces on the Commodore Remix site, under the username Commie User, have pulled together various rarities such as old articles and things here. Follow the link under my latest video to go there.

Good reading and do tell us what you think!

  • that,s the problem with annalogue sources,if you want to store digital data on it,it has to be encoded into annalogue format, but as with annalogue recordings, there will be allway,s changes between the copy and the original tape, and if the adc has to decodee those signals back to digital, chances are big that some cruccial data is lost duo the conversion, however if the decoder could identify missing data from the remained signals ,it,s possible to recover the data.

  • @johneymute All data storage media are analogue. It's just that most disc-based media, such as CD, were designed with error-correction on board to reduce the likelihood of loading errors.

But all media rots over time and so it's important to back up anything you would hate to lose every few years.

  • Wow thats one helluva lot of cables, tapes, machines and power!

  • Excellent bit of info that badly needed to be presented on youtube. So far there hasnt been much in the way of direct information about these things.

I am building up some stuff here to relive some of my youth:

    C64C + twin datasettes + c2n copier board

    C64TPC

    SD2IEC flash card kit

    1541 MKII

    XA1541 adaptor cart

All I need now is some physical 5 1/4 floppies, a Mssiah midi cartridge and bags of free time. I might even have a crack at making my own video review.

  • Great video with a lot of useful information. Thanks for making and sharing this video.

  • You're welcome! It needed to be done.
