Unfortunately none of us have inherited his incredible voice! This is without a doubt the best version of Myfanwy ever. Sends a chill down my back.
In the modern era, with the increased spotlight on Welsh language TV and the celebrity culture we have, Ryan would have been massive. What a waste that he died so young!
I had the pleasure to work at Swansea Grand Theatre when Ryan (and Ronnie) appeared there, to see a panto audience sitting in absolute silence while he sat on the edge of the stage singing Myfanwy was an experienc never to be forgotten.
Ryan Davies was my teacher St. John's primary school in Croydon. He and the headmaster (also Welsh) wrote musical plays for each year's senior class (10-11 year olds). When it was my turn, the play was called "The Phantom Coach" (My dad recorded the entire show - I still have tthe tape!) We all adored him, and missed him greatly when he left us to work with the BBC. So sad he died so young - he touched many lives with his, warmth, kindness and many talents.
He was such an amazing talent, so sad that he died so young. He was a very funny man and this performance of Myfanwy is so beautiful. It makes me very homesick though!
I have fond childhood memories of Ryan, who was a much loved friend of my parents. My father Alex Johnstone was the drummer at Swansea Grand Theatre for many years and shared happy times with Ryan doing the pantomimes. A tragic loss that a man with such talent, who was such a genuine person in an industry where many are not, should have died so young. God bless and nos da, Lisa x
I had the privilege of seeing Ryan in cabaret on many occasions and this was the last song I ever heard him perform. It still brings a tear to my eye and I hope his memory will never be forgotten. RIP, you were a real genius and superstar.
its been a year since i commented on this, but have to say Mr. Davies technique is so flawless, tender, and true, I have tried so hard to sound like him. It seems that only this song has such purity and sweetness, and tenderness in the voice that is also gripping is so hard to do. Mixing words of rejection with a beautiful sound is so unique, I enjoy this performance tremendously, makes me want to sing it over and over myself.
I am proud to say that my mother was born in Wales, and although I have never lived there permanently, it is without doubt where I belong. It is home. Thankyou for posting and letting me hear this beautiful voice. Reminds me of the people waiting for me, both over the border, and a little further away. Deeply moved and glad I'm not alone in this.
I saw him in the last 3 years of pantos in the Grand at least ,and have an autographed album dedicated to me personally by the man himself of Ryan at the Rank (from which this recording was taken), signed during final panto season he performed in. Of course, nobody realised that would be the case at the time.
Myfanwy boed yr holl o'th fywyd Dan heulwen ddisglair canol dydd. A boed i rosyn gwridog iechyd I ddawnsio ganmlwydd ar dy rudd. Anghofia'r oll o'th addewidion A wnest i rywun, 'ngeneth ddel, A dyro'th law, Myfanwy dirion I ddim ond dweud y gair "Ffarwél".
The best Myfanwy I've ever heard. Too bad it's marred by breaks and the photos. This heartfelt song should be sung without funny photos. So listen without looking, and if you're not crying when it's over, you have no soul.
I lived in Oystermouth in 1975, and I saw him regularly in the newsagents (John Menzies) there. Swansea Grand Babes in the Wood was the only time I saw him live, but of course he was on the TV and radio all the time.
He was completely irreplaceable - but John Cale also does an unforgettable Myfanwy.
What a touching tribute to the wonderful Ryan Davies...I met hime twice when I was a young boy & on both occasions he was so nice to me...I was 13 when he died & I remember delivering the Evening post & read the headlines...I felt as though I had lost one of my family...You were right during your wonderful video...he has never been replaced! AND NEVER WILL...Thank you for sharing this
"You know what, I think I was there in 1972 / 73 watchng Cinderella in the Grand."
My sister and I got up on the stage with him. We, and a few other volunteers, provided a "backing-track" for one of his songs. We played various instruments whilst Ryan gripped his larynx with his fingers, and oscillated his voice-box to the tune of "The Blue Danube" . I remember it vividly, although I was only 6 or so at the time. Fond memories of a uniquely gifted and lovely man.
This recording was made at the Rank, Swansea infront of just about every copper in the South Wales Constulary. It is in my opinion one of the best exmples of Ryan at his best - infront of a live audience, enjoying what he did so well - making pepole smile. I believe the record was issued through Black Mountain Records - if you have not got it in your collection then make time to do so you will, I PROMISE treasure it as I have since seeing him do it live
I had the great pleasure of seeing Ryan in Babes In The Wood when I was aged 7 (1977) I can still see him now, wearing a girls blonde wig , in plaits that curled up at the side.I now watch his son on Pobol Y Cwm (he plays the part of Mark) and I often wonder if he can sing like his dad.Cried my eyes out watching this video.Nos da Ryan, cariad.
My parents are from Llanhilleth and I remember watching Ryan and Ronnie when we moved to Exeter in Devon (England) circa 1973. They commented on the accuracy of the Welsh family sketch which was a regular feature on the show. Characters like "Nigel-Wyn" and "Philys-Doris" (Something like that-please forgive my lack of memory) I wonder if Ryan finally got the chance to perform the "Dracula Sketch" before he passed away. What a sad loss.

Gwych! Thanks so much for posting. I've been looking for a Ryan & Ronnie DVD but the BBC destroyed most of the recordings sadly.
Ryan's hauntingly beautiful rendition of Myfanwy is, for me, the definitive version.
I remember seeing him in The Grand as a child - he was one of the greatest comedians ever to walk the earth. A tragedy he was taken so soon.
Diolch unwaith eto.
